Why the Left Fails

Commented Dec 17, 2009 at 21:16:33 in Politics

“So, what is this article trying to say?

"Stop fighting for your principals...this is a "center-right nation" once we realize that we'll be happy with the way Darwinistic Capitalism has cannibalized the middle class".

No thank you.”

hp blogger Vanessa Carmichael replied on Dec 18, 2009 at 01:37:58

“No, the article, I, was saying the Left needs to get more aggressive in local politics, work on community outreach--whether that be townhall meetings, promoting progressive speakers at local community colleges and universities or letter writing to neighbors. Outreach is key because we have to change the electorate so we can change Congress--we need more Progressive senators and representatives who will support a progressive agenda.”

hyjanks replied on Dec 17, 2009 at 22:34:56

“I agree. It's like the author is saying, "Well, you can try as hard as you like to push progressivism, but in the end the same folks who just love the results of liberal legislation (Social Security, Medicare, etc) will fight to the death to keep you from instituting it."
The electorate is fickle--they don't know their collectives a$$es for a hole in the ground.”

“this reminds me of the conservative talking point that polls often show that "people consider themselves conservative over liberal by a count of two to one." That is until people are asked specific policy questions (public option, gun control, taxes for top earners), and then it's clear the electorate is far more liberal than the politicians in Washington.”

Famous for Being Famous: The Sarah Palin Show Is On the Air

Commented Nov 19, 2009 at 12:50:22 in Politics

“WHAT ARE HER POSITIONS? WHAT ARE HER SOLUTIONS? Not sure you're going to vote for her? What exactly would you be voting for? Republican or not, there has to be at least a little substance, what policies does she support that would make you want to vote for her? "Lower taxes and anti-choice" does not count, that just qualifies her as a republican civilian, not politician.”

Liberal Elitism Will Make Sarah Palin President - How Only Union Organizing Can Stop It

Commented Nov 13, 2009 at 02:40:55 in Politics

“could you please explain the positions Sarah Palin currently holds regarding the problems this country currently faces? Not the things she's against, but her actual solutions?”

Jorge Al-Subbad replied on Nov 13, 2009 at 05:17:26

“Ugh... 9 months into the Obama Presidency and he's already finished for 2010 and 2012... Chris Matthews and Mike Elk already have Sarah Palin winning the White House in four years. And just how on Earth are we supposed to negotiate our opinions with the Marsha Blackburns of the world until she stops seeing them as tyrannical socialism and embraces them as biblically literal teachings of Christ? Should we waste the remaining 3 years trying or maybe try fighting it out on the surface? The right has spent 35 years demonizing us ... and those that bought their lies have a very positive view of the kind of cut throat capitalism that comes with severe boom and bust cycles. All of the things government can do to alleviate these effects are denounced as socialism and every pipe fitter and non-plumbing plumber is convinced he is about to become a millionaire when he buys that plumbing business he is not about to buy. Also... how can President Obama allay the fears of working class whites who fear that blacks are going to take their jobs BUT who are pleased to see illegal immigrants who are willing to undermine blacks and union workers but don't want their medical care paid for even as it hurts hospitals. It's like a spaghetti tangle of positions.. and WE'RE supposed to work it out?”

Chris1962 replied on Nov 13, 2009 at 02:50:37

“If you're responding to me, luckynewman, no, I have no interest in investing my time in doing that. My point is that I think its big mistake to underestimate her. And I think it's an extremely big mistake to rabidly attack her as stupid and incompetent. She didn't become the governor of a state by being stupid. I think attacks from the left, like that, alienate average women out there in America. And last I checked, women were a pretty important voting bloc for the Dems. I think people ought to start attacking her policies, and cease with the "stupid" and "incompetent" insults. I really don't think it's gaining anyone anything. And I really don't have too much trouble seeing women putting her over the top, come election day some year down the road.”

Commented Nov 13, 2009 at 01:26:14 in Politics

“I find it interesting that you use Nixon in your arguments for why Palin could one day be President. I am certainly no fan of Nixon, but he was politically brilliant (personally, he was obviously fatally flawed). Sarah Palin, I'm sorry, is no Richard Nixon. Richard Nixon would also be considered a pinko if he ran today. I don't know if Sarah Palin could be president one day, but the fact remains if she ever is elected, America deserves its fate. If we continue to prize ideological doltishness in place of reasoned thought, we deserve to fail.”

TommyMcCarthy replied on Nov 13, 2009 at 06:12:38

“Whaever one thinks of nixon...the only comparison with Palin cuts against her political success..

Nixon was usually the smartest and best informed person in the room. and was ALWAYS the one with with the deepest HISTORICAL understanding of any given issue .
Unfortunately for him and us, he was also usually the most aggressive and unscrupulous, and the one with the most PERSONAL axes to grind.......... much life Ms. Palin.

Chris1962 replied on Nov 13, 2009 at 02:35:44

“>>>Sarah Palin, I'm sorry, is no Richard Nixon.>>>>

I wouldn't be too terribly sure about that. If you want to take a good hard look at the polls, those Tea Party "crazies" aren't hurting the Republican party. But the Democratic party, on the other hand, IS getting hurt. It's a bad idea to mistake your own loathing of Sarah Palin as a sentiment the entire rest of the country shares, because that really is not so. And I don't think efforts to tear her down by her by calling her stupid and incompetent, etc., is helping liberals/Democrats. I think it's infuriating a lot of women, frankly. And women are a pretty important voting bloc for the Democratic party.”

Wow, how many monkeys on how many computers did it take to figure that one out, over 100 million people voted in that election. Cons defended every despicable thing Bush did for eight and a half years only to figure things out when the economy collapsed. Now it's only been a year since the greatest financial collapse since the Great Depression and your ripping Obama apart for things 30 years in the making. The changes approved by the House Ways and Means Committee that Rangel chairs would strip away legal defenses and pile higher penalties on corporate and individual taxpayers facing IRS proceedings for what they claim are unintentional mistakes, experts said.

Rangel’s bill would:

* Punish those who fail to alert the IRS to potentially questionable tax exemptions.

* Bar the IRS from waiving penalties against taxpayers who clearly erred in good faith.

* Double fines in certain circumstances.

‘The bill raises penalties and eliminates many of the reasonable defenses that taxpayers have always been able to use when honest mistakes are uncovered,’ one lawyer told The Post.

In fact, the bill increases fines ‘in some cases even for honest mistakes,’ the expert added.””

The Public Option in Congress Is Now a Sham. Who Cares If Lieberman Kills It?

Commented Oct 30, 2009 at 23:36:33 in Politics

“What terrifies me most is that Obama doesn't even seem to grasp what the consequences will be if this bill doesn't reign in costs or provide universal coverage. Now Conservatives will have another "Big Government" program to bash even though this will be the most pathetically insignificant government program ever. With a strong public option progressives had a golden opportunity to prove once and for all that the government is not the enemy, but an integral part of civilized society.

If this passes and premiums continue to sky rocket, you can say goodbye to meaningful progressive legislation for at least a generation...or until America's economy completely flat lines (which will probably happen first).”

“SINGLE-PAYER HEALTHCARE REFORM IS THE ONLY ETHICAL AND FINANCIAL SOLUTION:

A recent study shows SINGLE-PAYER WOULD BE MAJOR STIMULUS FOR THE US ECONOMY:

** 2.6 Million New Jobs,
** $317 Billion in Business Revenue,
** $100 Billion in Wages, and
** $44 Billion New Tax Revenues

Here’s the study: http://www.calnurses.org/research/pdfs/ihsp_sp_economic_study_2009.pdf

it is clear the right has succeeded in destroying our history. Please go back to sixth grade social studies.”

“This country is full of fat people and for the most part I agree that we need to take responsibility for our health but there are plenty of things destroying our health that are beyond our control...especially to low income Americans. The worthless additives that are packed into our foods to keep the farm lobby happy is an issue that gets very little air time. And has anybody noticed that it is now MUCH cheaper to buy a cheeseburger at McDonalds or order a pizza at Dominoes than it is to actually go to the store, buy the ingredients, and make those things yourself? There is something very wrong with this country and the way it deals with food. Personal responsibility is great, but when 1 out of 5 children under 4 is considered morbidly obese (the ratio might be even worse now), there is something more sinister at work methinks.”
