Be fair. Believing one has the moral high-ground is not a party-specific flaw.
As for the conservative manifestation, it seems to be some weird self-image problem. I hear a lot of my fellow conservatives thumping their chests about how patriotic they are, or how American or Christian or moral. The truth is, most of them are fairly patriotic, or American or Christian or moral. Yet they carry on as though they doubt their own commitment. Or maybe they're afraid others will doubt them. Either way, it actually makes them look ridiculous. (I'm not specifically thinking of the Hannity crowd promoting each other to "great Americans.") You demonstrate character and value through your actions. You don't print it on your effin' shirt.
When someone starts telling me how morally wonderful they are, I keep a hand on my wallet.
