2012 Offends Catholics, Dimwits, Ex-Cons
Commented Nov 11, 2009 at 22:54:39 in Entertainment
“Was not proposing that 2012 had anything to do with mainstream religion. I was making a metaphorical reference that the use by date (stamped on food products) has passed or that the shelf life of religion has passed. Not knocking people who really get what their religion is trying to teach but more and more people use religion to divide and as a justification of intolerance of every variety - a sure sign of decay that stinks to high heaven (if you will..)
The Mayan civilization may have been wiped out but the Mayans live, by the way. Will the same think happen to our civilization?”

“Understood.
And yes, I am aware that Mayans still live. But they have been virtually wiped out.
It saddens me that people use religion to divide.”

“God/dess bless the New Agers! You don't see Drunvalo Melchizedek (for example - not promoting his deal) trying to be the moral authority for everyone on the planet or you don't see him and his followers trying to persecute non believers. He probably could care less if you get the whole flower of life thing. Those guys are all just holding onto a faith that the future could be transformative if there's enough of a critical mass of people becoming spiritual but not necessarily religious and recognizing the unity between all being, all life, regardless of your metaphorical set. In my opinion, mainstream religion's use by date is long past and it's time to get rid of the middle man between one's self and spiritual presence however you perceive it.”

“You know what's weird? If I go out to eat with someone and I choose a vegetarian entre they look at me and say, "I didn't know you were a vegetarian!" Well I'm not at the moment because I still have that bacon as comfort food thing going on. I have, however, increased good natural grown in the ground food and decreased animal products. I feel absolutely poluted when I overindulge in animal food. So I treat animal products like a drug you don't want to do all the time and go for the tofu and tempeh choices on the menu or the vegie burgers at the tavern. You know, a vegie burger doesn't give you that dead weight feeling in your stomach. Yummy!
It also drives me crazy that my family believes food comes out of boxes in the store. Food comes from the ground. The shorter the distance from dirt to plate the better it is for you! People don't read labels!!! What? there's as much sugar in my vitamin water as in my candybar??”

“I too, spend an enormous amount of time problem solving. I am sought out for my skill at reviewing and my immediate response to issues that others avoid. Complaining is not unique to women. All one has to do is listen to one sports talk show to realize that. I won't spend 2 minutes complaining about my favorite sports team, that I have no control over, but I will hash out problems that do affect me in the hopes that another point of view or another person's error will help me solve an issue.
I think part of the answer does lie within some of these responses. A woman feeling invisible does not mean she wants to be treated as a princess. Appreciation, respect and acknowledgement of her value go a long way.”

Women are less happy as we age, because we had to push so hard and after jumping all the hoops ( we thought) end up in our best days with fewer good jobs, not able to penetrate the few 'old girls network' that exist. Not to mention, money always become the final blow. The dictates of our society demand that women are self-sufficient to have any taste of a good living. Surely, a few make it into politics/other positions of leadership. But unfortunately, despite what appears, most qualified/hardworking women, remain at the bottom of the pile; their financial and professional goals, still unmet. But what's new? We have come a long way, baby! And my hope lies in the accomplishments of next generation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6iucv1DYYc”

“The thing that makes me sad and sometimes hopeless is that even though I am more educated than my father and I've got a "career", my dollar doesn't go as far as his did in the 60's. I grew up in a very nice house which is now considered "historic" and worth a ton of money (we sold it in the early 70's.. sign!). None of us kids could ever have a house like that. I say women are unhappy because as we gained power in the workplace, the middle class was being destroyed. So here we are, full of talent and careers, but our dollars are near worthless. I'm glad I'm not raising any kids because I see that my nieces will have less than me and my sibs and they are already 30 something.”

“Since I was a little kid, I never thought we lived in a free country and certainly not fair. When I found out in the 60's that black people weren't allowed to vote I said, "What? I thought this was a free country!" When I found out how brutally Native Americans were treated, I said, "What? I thought this was a free country!" When I realized that everyone had to work and there was very little if any flexibility in how they worked and no negotiating the terms of their working (I wasn't raised in a union household) I said, "What? I thought this was a free country!" When I realized that just about every healthcare plan I've ever had only allowed me to use certain docs and facilities I thought, "What? I thought this was a free country!"

“Since forever I've never turned the TV on in the morning. So I got in my car to go to work and heard one of the local DJ's say, "Well, this is an act of war isn't it?" I thought, what? What's an act of war, what? I don't really remember what they said after that. When I got to work, everyone was in the conference room watching the events as they were unfolding. We all saw the towers come down together. It was a state of shock. A little bit later, my supervisor called from Germany to say she'd be back tomorrow and to catch her up on what all has been going on at work. I told her I wasn't sure she'd be able to come back tomorrow and to turn on the TV in her motel room right now. She thought I was BS'ing her for a minute and asked to speak to someone else who told her the same thing. I remember my boss - the facility director - doing something about taking precautions about something. I had a friend who was going to be flying in from Boston that day, too, but that was not her flight and they'd canceled the trip all together.
I turn my TV on in the morning now. It's like since then, I just can't look away.”

“I never used to watch the news. When Bush was "elected," I wasn't happy, but I wasn't engaged enough to put my feelings into action. From that gruesome Tuesday afternoon on, CNN or MSNBC is on my television first thing in the morning and intermittedly until I fall asleep to either the Daily Show or Colbert. I started reading news from The Guardian to get an international perspective, and began watching Bill Moyers and 60 Minutes and Frontline. The 2004 election cycle drove me nuts. I began going door to door for Obama in late spring of '08. I don't think my (or our) case of political awakening is rare. As much as people in this country became isolationists, others became tuned in. Small solace in the face of tragedy, but something important that can be overlooked. I do not intend to be caught unaware in quite the same way again.”
