“There are people like John Huntsman, Christie, and Jeb Bush (ya, I know) which give me hope for Lincoln's party (unbelievable, right?). As someone who supports neither party, I do admit that a healthy democracy has intelligence as it's political blood.”

“Huntsman's political views are just as extreme as the rest of the conservative loons , he just doesn't shout them , same for Christie , both try to pretend to be reasonable . Jeb Bush is just George with a few more IQ points and the ability to speak the english language . The reality is these guys just look reasonable compared to the rabid lunatics in the rest of their party , but their policies are just as poisonous and destructive .”

“I have a personal vendetta against GOP for this shutdown. I was in talks with the NY Fed for a job and things sort of fell flat because of uncertainty.”

“I own a small construction company that is doing work for the govt. Our job, like hundreds of other govt. jobs, was shut down due to the shutdown. That meant my crew of 25 men, just like hundreds of thousands of others sat home for the duration of the shutdown. (note these people aren't counted when the figure of 800,000 out of work is thrown around) Congress sure isn't going to reimburse us for the time lost due to their silly little games. For people whose lives had just began to get back to normal after the fiasco of 08 losing 2 weeks pay is a huge thing.”

“The problem here is that the mathematical models are far beyond comprehension of most people. I am a graduate student in mathematics and these equations require a good understanding of physics, computer science, and mathematics to really get a grip on. Too bad most of the regulators (seriously, I know 1 physicist in US Congress) are actually qualified to truly comprehend what is going on.”

J T K on May 9, 2013 at 17:19:11

“It's only destabilized the market once (as far as we know) and the price recovered pretty quickly. The Twitter crash was not a HFT crash (computers don't care about the White House) and only people who got caught out with sell orders or who were stupid got caught out in a loss during either "crash."”

J T K on May 9, 2013 at 17:16:29

“I have to agree with AJM, that is a pretty ridiculous statement. Nobody would invest their money if they could only get their money out four times a year. No company would be listed either because even if each day one 365th of the people were able to trade it would still cause massive price swings each day.”

J T K on May 9, 2013 at 17:13:45

“There is no such thing as too much liquidity. Liquidity in itself is a good thing because it allows for faster trade fulfillment and smaller spreads.”

J T K on May 9, 2013 at 17:03:41

“So we should limit everyone to the lowest common denominator? You sound like the summer camp counselor who told me as a kid to let the slow kid get on base so he didn't feel bad. The everyone wins mentality makes everyone fail.”

J T K on May 9, 2013 at 17:01:41

“By that logic companies that switch to using robots instead of human labor to build things should pay to make up for the inefficiency of human labor which is utterly ludicrous. The fact that companies can do more with less isn't a bad thing and trying to make it one is backwards thinking.”

J T K on May 9, 2013 at 16:48:02

“Three words, stop limit order.”

J T K on May 9, 2013 at 16:19:55

“It's like any other middle-man, their money comes from being between point A and point C.”

J T K on May 9, 2013 at 16:18:52

“Explain that logic. It isn't stolen from anyone, it is a penny made on the difference between what someone will sell for and what someone will buy for. Anyone who makes a market order agrees that they might lose or make slightly more or less and the buyers/sellers aren't losing anything.”

J T K on May 9, 2013 at 16:16:40

“No it isn't unless your retirement fund is rapidly trading in and out of securities. Except for crashes and other anomalies your investments aren't going to be affected by sub penny trades by HFT bots.”

J T K on May 9, 2013 at 16:15:03

“Agreed. Too many people panic because they don't understand new technology and concepts and there are companies like HuffPo which capitalize on that trend.”

J T K on May 9, 2013 at 16:13:10

“Why would they care about traditional value if they are trading on price changes? Many human traders trade this way, albeit more slowly and on larger price changes. Trading solely on expected or past price changes is not in itself less legitimate than any other trading strategy.”

J T K on May 9, 2013 at 16:09:31

“You are making the flawed assumption that it is zero sum, which it isn't. Either seller wants to sell at their set price and the buyer wants to buy at their set price or they let the market price decide. Nobody has been able to show noticeable changes to market price, except for during events like the flash crash, which is what would affect regular traders.”

J T K on May 9, 2013 at 16:05:38

“So did the combustion engine. Luckily we ignored the buggy whip makers.”

J T K on May 9, 2013 at 15:59:12

“Your tinfoil hat is on too tight.”

J T K on May 9, 2013 at 15:58:29

“They may not be contributing much but I dare you to try to explain how they are stealing anyone's money. They aren't affecting the long term price and they only buy and sell from/to willing sellers and buyers respectively giving the selling and buyers specifically what they want.”

J T K on May 9, 2013 at 15:55:51

“Unless you sell during a dip you aren't affected by it and they aren't fleecing anyone except willing sellers, in many cases other HFT traders.”

J T K on May 9, 2013 at 15:53:28

“How did HFT take your money? Were you foolish enough to sell during the flash crash?”

J T K on May 9, 2013 at 15:51:56

“Humans can still trade and nobody has been able to even show that human traders are affected unless they trade during an anomaly like the flash crash. Remember, this is penny increments and they often cancel each other out so there is no way regular traders are going to be affected normally.”

J T K on May 9, 2013 at 15:18:16

“Not really. Unless they are selling during a flash crash or are trying to time the markets with precision they won't be affected at all.”

J T K on May 9, 2013 at 14:05:02

“So are you saying HFT, and by extension many other things, should be limited just because so few people have the knowledge to understand them? We wouldn't be where we are now if we shutdown innovations because most people couldn't understand them.”

Conservatives Struggle To Explain How Mitt Romney Lost 2012 Presidential Election

Commented Nov 9, 2012 at 11:10:01 in Politics

“Dear GOP, here is the biggest reason for your loss.

You accuse all liberals of just wanting "things" and "stuff". You said everyone who voted for Obama was uninformed and didn't really want to work for anything. You are telling me that I am a freeloader who doesn't want to work hard in life. As someone who was an illegal immigrant as a child (now I am a green card holder), I worked 3 jobs to pay a total of 130k for two college degrees (physics and math). I am currently a graduate student in math. You tell me to my face I am not human and I deserve no rights.

I am a productive member of the society (a teacher) and you told me you would have encouraged my "self deportation"? Progressives want to take care of those who cannot take care of themselves. The poor, the elderly, the young, the needy. It is our duty as humans to help each other to survive the harsh winters of this society.

As Jon Stewart said, the people who get "things" and "stuff" are your voters (elderly on Medicare and war vets on government assistance). You are all wolfs dressed as sheep. Time moves constantly forwards and it will not wait for your party to catch up.

Evolve or fade away.

Regards,
A progressive liberal.”
