Christian Leaders Scapegoat Gays on Marriage
Commented Nov 25, 2009 at 15:29:44 in Politics
“I don't think marriage is a horrible thing! What I think is horrible is the espousing of "lifelong commitment" as some sort of litmus test when the people espousing it are not passing it themselves. I don't personally care if somebody who can marry wants to do it 1000 times but that same person had best not be preaching about some unbreakable sacred bond that occurs through marrying if they're not living up to it themselves. I wish everyone who did marry put forth the effort to stay married in that "lifelong" way, but that's my own preference -- all I am saying is if "lifelong commitment" is a prerequisite for being able to marry, straight people are far from living up to it.”

“"pledging lifelong commitment" -- If only this was the example that straight people were presenting, I might buy more of their argument(s). There is very little "lifelong" about the way straight people conduct marriage in this modern society, multiple marriages are the norm now. There is currently a commercial airing frequently on TV about some woman finding "Mr Right" as her "second husband" that epitomizes the loss of such an ideal, this "lifelong" claim. Were their behaviors more in line with what they preach, I could give them more credence -- in particular since it is *our* behaviors ("lifestyle") they condemn with such vehemence.”

“And the children of these broken marriages are emotionally hurt. It is a sad thing, but what is your solution. To allow more people to marry and thus increase the chances of divorce and thus hurting more children.
Doesnt make sense to me if you think marriage is such a horrible thing then you should not wish it on more people.”

Why the Palin "Hate Affair" Will Backfire
Commented Nov 20, 2009 at 11:48:52 in Politics
“I really don't think the problem with Palin is misogyny. If anything, she benefits because she is a woman -- any man who conducted himself the way she has, with the contradictions and lies, the juvenile mentality and vindictiveness, simply would not be given any credence -- he would be flat out ignored and any hopes he had of being taken seriously would be ludicrous. Palin's appeal or non-appeal is based on the type of person she is or isn't, not her being a woman.”
maryyooch replied on Nov 20, 2009 at 12:40:30
“If Palin were a man we would have never heard about her after she lost the election.”
DebM replied on Nov 20, 2009 at 12:07:11
“Agreed. Our extreme dislike over this woman isn't because of misogyny. It's not that she's a woman. It's that she's a woman who is hypocritical, vindictive, not to mention dumber than a doorposts, yet cloaks herself in her "Christian beliefs" and sexuality as a means of getting ahead. Yet when someone calls her on her sexuality, she cries foul. And her "Christian beliefs" don't even come close to resembling the kind, loving and accepting sort of person I expect a true Christian to be.”

“It's also usual that "small" sexual degradations of a MOTHER toward her SON lead to a diminished sense of self. Too few examine the effects of sexualization and degradation on boys as they grow up, I guess we're supposed to be "stronger" or something. Not to diminish the higher frequency of fathers versus daughters, but it happens with mothers and sons, too. The other key thing people overlook when it comes to either or both parent is that incest does not only take on a physical form, there are many incestuous intimacies that can wreck the soul that have nothing to do with the physical.”

Does the Bible Inspire Hate and Intolerance?
Commented Jun 22, 2009 at 16:37:28 in Living
“The Bible itself is not responsible for the hatred spewed forth in its name. People who have hate in their hearts will find a means to justify it. They so often choose The Bible because it has to be taken on faith and is not easily proven nor disproved. It presents an unreality that people can then interpret and communicate how they wish, stopping any arguments or interruptive realities with proclaiming it as "God's Word" or something similar. People forget that Jesus Christ is but a major character in The Bible, there are many very dark, violent sections that a weak mind can take away and run with. Using The Bible to hate really misses its point, and aggressively maintaining that hatred is justified by The Divine when its behaviors are primarily borne out of human failings fogs over its true source. Humans need to justify the ugly aspects of our nature, and the way The Bible is written allows them to do that.”

Why Childless Straight Couples Make the Case for Gay Marriage

“The only "trip" here is that you cloak your concern as being about the children when it appears more to boil down to you just don't like something that isn't your idea of "normal". You operate under the assumption that gay families being unusual is going to damage the kids, but coming from unusual families is usually only a hindrance when a child comes up against closed-minded, judgmental people. If you're so concerned about the children, why not invest your energy in making the world a better place instead of pretending to wring your hands about what are really your own prejudices?”

“True but only to a point on two counts: (1) Straights can't know what it's like to be gay, but gays are constantly confronted with the straight world and it is constantly lorded over us what we are *not* and how we are *not* so while we can only assume what being straight is like, straight people rarely have to give what being gay is or isn't much thought and (2) when you say "don't even want to know" about who is gay or not you reveal your prejudice against those of us who have the unfortunate circumstance of being recognizably gay. Too many straight folks recoil when they can tell someone is gay, even if that person is not necessarily effeminate or flamboyant. That prejudice permeates your assertions.”

There needs to be a certain number of a population who do *not* reproduce or overpopulation will kill off the species. I wish more people could consider that, perhaps indeed we homosexuals are part of God's plan for the world...”

“It's not *that* you disagree with us, it is *how* you disagree with us. Your arguments often do end up being hateful and bigoted, which is unfortunate. Too often, people won't budge when it comes to expanding their views of reality, and their impatience with that often leads them to grab at straws.
As for your assertion that sexual organs are created to go specifically together, please explain why oral sex has become known as "The Goodbye Kiss" and so commonplace and casual amongst heterosexual teens -- if they only can do specific things, why is that so possible?”

Why Gay Marriage Is Important for All Americans
Commented May 27, 2009 at 16:46:47 in Politics
“But there are plenty of "sins" that are perfectly legal, and anyone committing any of the many "sins" which are not legal can still marry. Even a convicted child molester serving time in prison can marry as long as it is to someone of the opposite sex. To rely on "sin" as the reason is not only moot, but hypocritical -- not one of those conservative "Christians" is without sin himself. Not one.”

Cheney Should Remember -- Really Remember -- Our Fallen Troops

“Cheney would not know about such sacrifice if came up and bit him in his butt. His view of the casualties of war has been clear from the start of these wars, they do not matter to him. These wars are laden with scandals benefiting his big business cronies and he should hang his head in shame, only he has none. He keeps the focus on torture and the USA being "safe" to deflect from the misleading ways he led us into these wars, and to make himself feel important. His only importance in history will be his serving as an example of remorseless arrogance that not only did not make the USA "safer" but put us in greater danger because of the ways he led us into war and who he chose to go to war against.”
American Idol? Try Christian Idol

“I'm indifferent to American Idol overall but it does surprise me immensely that the "Christian" demographic even watches this show! None of the fundies I know of would ever deign to watch something like this, the music and attitude is entirely secular and riddled with many of the "sins" they stay on the lookout for.”
hp blogger Michael Giltz replied on May 21, 2009 at 22:33:02
“Almost every demo imaginable votes for Idol -- it's been the #1 show in the country for six straight years, which is a record I believe. Idol is great family programming and the born again Christians I know watch it and do have an interest spotting their own just like I wonder if anyone is gay and play special attention to them. I don't know any fundamentalists personally but "Christian" covers a lot more than the fundamentalists. Did you know a majority of people who identify themselves as evangelical support a woman's right to choose, for example? Don't limit "Christians" to the far right.”
