“Just for the sake of argument, let's say we agree with the Cheneys that torture does save lives and we practice it; what then, is the difference between them and us?

Are there no other ways of getting info?”

skullman replied on Oct 14, 2009 at 11:27:06

“Torture is used to get false confessions. John McCain was actually right about that.”

bedfordny replied on Oct 14, 2009 at 10:22:05

“They approved torture for the sinister reason of trying to get prisoners to link Iraq to the 9/11 attacks thus justifying the war there.

Torture doesn't ever yield info because the person who is getting tortured will say anything he thinks the 'interrogator' wants him to say just to make the torture stop.

Liz will say anything to promote and protect her father's sick and twisted version of events, even justifying the use of torture. Sick.”

Alright then, you should ad:
"compared to 1949."

Because the way the original sentence stands, it's a statement about present times and relative to other current states.”

“I agree completely with mngeorge; Cesca, dared not call a spade a spade and danced around the subject, heaping epithets on Lieberman. Lieberman, a democrat who supports Bush's war to this day, is a traitor to the United States, because he must know that this war is unpopular with 2/3 of the electorate and is harmful to the interests of the US. There is nothing wrong with a patriotic Jewish American citizen supporting Israel; but to do do at the expense of and in contradiction with the interests of the United States, is treasonous.”

“"messianism", "propagandistic", "idolatrous fever".

Mr. clear-minded, clear-eyed intellectual ( Daniel Menaker ),

After 8 horrific years of quagmired wars, economic melt down, lost jobs, lost houses, lies, the people of this country are starved for some decency, some veracity, some competence and some good judgment.

We don't need a messiah, as you suggest; we need a decent man with a vision of how to solve the awful mess your republican party put us in.

It may well be that Obama, with his eloquence, has hoodwinked us; but it may be that is authentic and the choice we are confronted with is him or Mccain. Take your pick.”

MoeB replied on Oct 30, 2008 at 13:08:37

“To just expand on your point:

It is right-wing pundits and the such who gave Obama this "messiah" label. So, even in our current atmosphere, I guess if you say something enough times, people start to believe it...apparently, Daniel has bought into it. I know plenty of people who are rabid supporters of Obama--and NONE of them view him as some sort of messiah who is here to deliver us from all of our problems. They view him as a vessel for change.

At one point in his article, I thought he was going to refer to Obama as "The One".”

“If we consider the teachings of Jesus and the conduct of the religious right of the republican party in this election, then
Christian republican must be an oxymoron.
It is my sad life experience that the more ignorant a person is, the more sure of himself, the less flexible that person is with regards to his/her convictions ( as opposed to truth ).
It is hard to have a discussion with a person who is entrenched in his opinions and who will rationalize the facts as these facts are presented to them.
This may explain why Bush won, as his constituency is always fired up and ready to do battle with the "evil" democrats.
We are all Americans and we all wish our country well; a democrat is not a republican's enemy; he is an American who believes in a more pragmatic, less ideological, more compassionate ( not welfare-oriented ) way of governance.”

“I was watching the Catholic TV channel the other day and the speaker was busy defending what the Catholic Church did to Galileo three hundred years ago. Said they had no other choice because Galileo kept insisting he was right and made fun of the pope. Had no choice. Catholics don’t want choices, they want to be told what to do.

I am aware of all the good things the Christian church does and yes I am a member, but the church really has been wrong much of the time and should stay far away from politics.

It is no coincidence that the Catholic Church was responsible for the Grand Inquisition
In Spain that killed and crippled thousands of innocent people and now the Republican party chooses to approve torture of the innocent to find the guilty. To this day Bush and Cheney and will defend the use of torture.

Torture is not who we are. We are supposed to be the good guys remember?

So turn off the Catholic channel and watch Charlie Rose instead.”

This is a consequence of unregulated, unethical capitalism; priority number one of the press is to make money; priority number two is to gain political power and push the political philosophy of the network owner.

War is a blunt instrument and is the last resource, when all else has been tried and has failed. War is never the first choice.

The Iraq war was a war of choice on a country that did not have any connection with Al Qaeda.”
