Washington Is Nuts

Commented Oct 16, 2009 at 11:05:57 in Politics

“Willy, think way back to 2008, when we were on the brink of a worldwide depression. Then president Obama took over and brought things back to a steady equilibrium by spending money and starting to enact some regulations over the financial markets. Digging out of the economic ditch that Dubya Bush dug us into isn't over yet, but it's well on its way. FDR spent us out of the Great Depression too, so get used to it. By the way, did you notice in the statistics you quote that the national debt in relation to GDP increased only 3 points in the 10 years between 1990 and 2000 (during the last 8 years of which, Bill Clinton was president) but in the 8 years between 2000 and 2008 (when Dubya Bush was president) it increased by 12 points. Interesting”

WilliamBradford replied on Oct 16, 2009 at 11:29:13

“You are correct that President Clinton - thanks to a responsible Republican Congress - presided over a period of healthy growth and controlled debt.

You are incorrect that FDR "spent us out of the Great Depression". He spent us into it, and only a world war got us out.

As for whether Obama has brought us equilibrium or started our greatest slide ever, only time will tell.”

“Tony, we can thank Dubya Bush for proving beyond any shadow of a doubt that Reagonomics is a total fraud. Reagonomics only purposes are to:
1. Make the rich exponentially richer
2. Keep the middle class and poor in their place”

“Tony, if you're worried about the national debt (and federal deficit) my question is: Where were you during the past eight years while the national debt was doubled and a massive surplus was turned into the biggest deficit in U.S. history.”

WilliamBradford replied on Oct 16, 2009 at 11:08:26

“Where do you people get your numbers?

In 1999, before Bush took office, the debt as a percentage of GDP was 61%. In 2007, it was 65%.

It's true that, due to a Republican Congress and a cooperative President, the deficit was controlled for a couple of years 1998-2000.

As a result of the actions since 2008, the debt has jumped from 65% of GDP to 90% this year, with a budget to put it over 100% by 2011. There is nothing to blame this on except the decisions made in the last year of GWB and the current Obama administration.”

Commented Aug 14, 2009 at 13:18:52 in Politics

“A lot of Republicans at the town hall meetings are yelling "I want my country back". So I wondered, what, really, has changed. Then I thought of two major changes that they're probably upset about:
1. The president is not a white person
2. The president is smart
Other than that, what has changed?”
