And now we await our Dictator.
Just like the last one, she is a figure of fun, an easy target. But she speaks to the man and woman on the street and she appeals to their latent anger.
Sarah Palin and the network keeping her in the public eye are all dangerous. Don't make fun of her, watch her, study her. Only then can we try to short circuit the coup in the making.”

Horribly there is more maturity in Jaws and Close Encounters then were was in his movies after ET. Something happened, something changed in him.
He has this horrible need to dress harsh reality in dreck. Its a failing and I won't forgive it anymore.
Its a shame Tarantino is done for... In my opinion, Jackie Brown showed a lot of artfulness. That I never thought he had in him. But since it was a big fat box office failure he will never get the chance to experiment like that again. And that is a damn shame.”

“It's not just the "elites", though. The media starting buying into the more talentless stars', producers' , studios' and directors' press machines story that the emperor really DID wear clothes, movies made up entirely of violence and T and A that had nothing to do with the plot--where good acting, intelligent writing, etc. were beside the point--really were great. They promoted these type movies, the folks at home saw the reviews, etc. saying they were 'good', went in droves, and the movies made money. Once they made money, the stars, directors, etc., knew a good thing when they saw it and continued to make more of the same.
Having said that, I also don't believe that every foreign film is good just because it is foreign. For example, lately British cinema seems to be putting out stuff inspired by plotless-American violence/and-t-and-A, whereas in the past they were kinda good about making films about real-looking people in real situations, not plastic surgery victims in films that look like video games.”

There are plenty of directors from John Ford to Billy Wilder who cranked out great films well into their twilight years.
In the meantime, the omissions of "Wall-E" and "Gran Torino" for Best Picture last year reminded me of the snubs delivered to "The Wild Bunch" and "Easy Rider" for Best Picture in 1969, two movies that FAR surpassed the eventual winner, "Midnight Cowboy", in their impact on film history and pop culture. The same will be true of "Slumdog Millionaire" to those two pictures.”

“First of all, bankers aren't being bailed out. The 'bailouts' have been described terribly, though I'm not going to say this is all a function of PR. The fact is, the idea behind the so-called 'bailouts' is to deleverage the bank holding companies by buying off the toxic assets. Here's why--based on the mortgage boom of the mid-2000s, the marginal profit rate--a simple calculus equation that's essentially the derivative of the revenue minus the overall cost of the mortgage to the lender--there was widespread (and not unfounded) speculation as to the continued increase of home values. In 2006, in fact, 40% of the homes being bought were second, third, and fourth "investment" homes, not primary residences--this based on the boom, too. However, because of all of the subprime, variable-rate mortgages that were being given out and being used to buy homes, the lion's share of which were meant as investment homes to be sold before the rate changed, a lot of people began to default on their mortgages, which threw the marginal profit derivative off. Because so much had been staked on that continued growth, there was a huge loss of money because the bets embedded in those derivatives had to be paid off--and the insurance put in place was the unregulated and nonexistent 'credit default swaps,' which were illegitimate and didn't make up for the losses... And so the banks turned inwards, wouldn't lend-hence the need for the bailouts.”
