“Tolerance does not mean beyond criticism.
And as far as being supposedly tolerant of Islam, I for one am not. Dogmatic Islam is just as morally repugnant as dogmatic Christianity.”

“OK, but a lot of the posters here go way beyond criticism. Juan Williams disagrees with Brit every Sunday, but I doubt he'd say Brit has no right to be on the panel next to him. What most of the people her seem to be saying is that Hume has no place saying what he said where he said it, i.e., Christians opinions are inappropriate to be uttered on a news analysis show, and should keep their mouths shut.
That's a lot more than mere criticism of someone's opinion.”

“Sorry, but I don't buy that. The bible clearly labels other things as abominations, without any ambiguity. Payment to a judge, in any form, has never been the consequence for anything the bible considers to be a great moral evil. Religious apologists tap dance around this issue because they know it reveals a *huge*, irreconcilable mistake in their ridiculous dogma.
I agree with you, though, about people being irresponsible about abortion and using it as birth control. The problem, though, is not abortion itself, but prudish attitudes about sex and birth control, as well as sexual double standards applied to women.”

Very true, but not my point. My point was tolerance, not constitutional law. And libs calim to be tolerant of other viewpoints. And spare me the, "we don't have to be tolerant of intolerance" line, when Islam, that which we are supposed to be tolerant of, treats women and gays so horribly.”

“And gay and lesbian people who want children will have them and raise them regardless of whether or not they have the right to marry. Anyone who is really concerned about "the children" would support marriage equality to make sure that those families have all the rights and protections they are entitled to.
But we all know that this is not really about "the children." "The children" is just another catch phrase the religious right likes to use to instill fear in people and demonize people who are different. They lie.”

“Considering what the bible says about miscarriage a mere chapter after the 10 commandments, interpreting "thou shalt not kill" as applying to unborn fetuses is not only illogical, it's also totally irrational.
Exodus 21: 22-25
"If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe."
If god considered abortion to be the great moral evil that the religious right believes it to be today, it would have surely been called out as such, rather than being described as a minor offense punishable by payment to a judge. Claiming anything else is merely an attempt to rewrite history according to dogma.”

“going from your quote the payment is not spelled out. it could be paid in gold or any other payment the judge sees fit and the payment is made to the husband. my interpretation is that if a man causes injury to a woman resulting in a miscarriage he shall repay the woman's husband as a judge sees fit. this doesn't track with what you're saying. your quote doesn't, in anyway, suggest that it is a minor offense either.
the commandments are like the Constitution. everything else is an interpretation or extrapolation thereof. there is no way the authors of the bible or the participants of history could anticipate what unbridled abortion would lead to today. religious doctrine and dogma are as much living ideas as the Constitution and its laws are.
i am not catholic or any other religion. i am just disgusted by the irresponsibility that abortion has created. just today a co-worker told me about a fourth abortion he forced a girl to have and this is the fourth girl he's done it to and the third one this year alone. i am also disgusted by lae term abortions. there is absolutely no reason for a woman to hold on to a fetus for that long before deciding to abort.”
