The Republican Way: Keeping Everything The Way It Is

“They call the Republicans the "party of no", but people telling us "no" is what we need more of, honestly. Of course, Republicans have no credibility to me. Nor do the Democrats. So what sort of change should we look for?”

“Hang in there with President Obama. Change takes time and change is hard to take after you have been putting up with the BUSH dynasty!”

“I agree. We definitely need to hear "no" more often in terms of *any* governmental spending.
It's hard to see who, if anyone, from either party will really stand up for that kind of "no."”

“This is an interesting turn of events for Obama. I mean, he was the "epitome of change" and now he's being scorned for doing "nothing".
Though he really hasn't done "nothing at all". What bothers me, though, is how President Bush could get legislation passed through a democratic controlled Congress and yet President Obama seems to have difficulty with the same Congress. My thoughts are that this country is too conservative-minded for someone as liberal as President Obama and his ideas. Yes, you may consider yourself a liberal, but this country is still a majority conservative. http://www.gallup.com/poll/120857/conservatives-single-largest-ideological-group.aspxx) It's a gallup poll... take it for however you choose. :)
I believe that things like Health Care reform, stimulus after stimulus, devaluing of the american currency, continued Iraq/Afghan wars, Gitmo still open, etc. are beginning to weigh heavy on American's morale (have been for a while). Obama was chosen to bring about a "change" and so far he hasn't brought about anything but an expansion of what Bush did, if we're going to be honest. We're left with the same thing we always have been.
Thoughts? And please do keep the insults down as they really aren't necessary.”

“An expansion of what Bush did would have meant invading Iran, privatizing medicare and social security, and a stimulus with no aid going straight to job building and unemployment. And you could forget about any kind of health care, or CO2 reduction. Gitmo would be doubling instead of working toward closing it, and we'd still be torturing. More public land would be handed over to private developers, instead of protected from them. There would have been no hate crimes bill either, since beating up gays is not a hate crime in George Bush's America.
Any president who was not completely insane would have bailed out the banks, since otherwise they would have been bailing out millions of individual account holders, and we would have no banking system in this country. The collapse of the banking system would have affected other sectors of the economy even more. Every part of the bailout made sense. There should have been still more for the middle and lower classes in there (they did get billions), but that is the political reality of our Senate.”

“Bush didn't have to deal with the kind of Congress Obama is dealing with. No Democrat senator or congressman vowed to see Obama fail. The Republicans in this congress have openly said they will say "no" to everything Obama wants. No other President and George Bush, Senior, publically stated this, had to deal with the vitriolic media coverage Obama has to deal with. . Put a right winger on TV or radio and all he wants to deal with is what Obama is not doing and if you start talk about what he had done, they change the subject quickly. Obama said he would bring change to washington, he brought it and the right said We will not do it and our only goal is to see that change does not happen. Our only goal is to see that Obama fails and the country will do down too but so what, that's irrelevant to us. Start putting blame where blame is due. Obama hasn't even been in office a year. He was left with Bush's disaster that he left the country in. Obama can pursue all the things he wanted to do, he has to try and clean up the mess. He never promised everything would be done in one year. Let's don't start whinning about Obama yet. Its the first time we have the whole truth about how bad things are and we don't seem to be able to handle the truth.”

“Majority conservative?
Majority = 50 + 1
Plurality = largest group yet less than 50%
And the biggest problem that Obama faces is that Democrats have a much larger tent. The majority of Republicans are Conservative. The majority of Democrats are NOT liberal. So when you are trying to deal with a coalition that is 1/3 liberal, almost a half are self described moderates, and a small but important slice that is Conservative, you will have more problems with legislation.”

“The wheels of government move slow. They are designed that way.
Lincoln too was scorned throughout his presidency for moving too slow, not being bold enough. Now we call him a hero.
I've never worked in government but I have worked with the worlds largest companies. They too move slow. I've shepherded big change through an organization like that and there's a thousand people who have vested interests in letting you fail. One moves carefully and with consensus.
I think we're naive if we believe that Obama was going to make huge changes in short time frames. What is a realistic time frame for any of these issues? Months? Years?
I for one am going to judge the man on his record after he's out of office rather than second guess him while he's there. He was the best candidate in the race for election and we chose him. Now we need to live with our choice.”

“I believe President Obama wants to effectuate the change he talked about so often. However, when you look at how our government is set up, the real people who have the power are the legislators. Those in Congress. They were the problem last year, they are the problem now and they will be the problem in the future if we don't elect representatives and senators who represent the people instead of the special interests. The President doesn't write the laws. The Congress does.”
