What bothers me is I wanted add the prior administration was more cynical, but after Rahm Emanuel's recent comments combined with Obama talking about what great reform the Senate bill is, I couldn't write that.”

Problem is, the free market sorted out the taxpayers last year. Or didn't you notice the biggest sacking of a national treasury in the history of humanity?”

“China's a great example of the problems of dictatorship as well. Consider the untold suffering during their "great leap forward".
Oh, and China today isn't a true dictatorship. The party leader has a central committee and generals to deal with. He doesn't simply get to run around saying, off with his head.
In theory, your social studies teacher has a point. And he was explaining Hobbes' Leviathan to you. The rub is, what if your dictator ain't so benevolent? Without the ability to remove him, the people suffer.
In the past century and a half or so, we've had woefully few benevolent dictators, and they simply haven't balanced out the Stalins & Hitlers & Pol Pots & Idi Amins & that weird runt in North Korea.”

“Senator Conrad can generate as much hot air as he wants at this point.
He knows as well as everyone else that the Dems have dug themselves a huge hole with this thing. The conventional wisdom in both Houses and the White House is that a bill needs to be delivered to the President's desk and signed.
Both Houses understand the difference is going to have to be split. Politically, none of these senators at this point has the option of bolting. Even Lieberman understands he's married to whatever the conference committee produces now - if he wants to keep his saggy derriere on that committee chair he's got.”

“Cuba's health care system overall is rated slightly above the US.
A lot of people think communist Cuba = evil. Cuba certainly has its issues, and in many respects I wouldn't swap Cuba for the US. However, a dispassionate analysis of health care outcomes for the entire population shows that for a country as poor as Cuba, they're doing quite a bit.
The very fact that a poor COMMUNIST country can produce some better outcomes than the uber-rich uber-capitalist US should make the defenders of our broken system hang their heads in shame.
Instead, the soulless vampires pay off their lackeys in Congress and keep fleecing ordinary Americans.”

The difference between the former and the latter is that we more or less expected to have to advocate actively for progressive issues.”

“From what I've heard, Iran's internal politics are pretty complex. There may be Iranian internal political reasons the press is not privy to, and/or the US or Iraqi officials aren't talking about.
Another possibility - with Iran disunified politically at home, perhaps someone there thought that baiting the US could elicit an American military response, which would serve to strengthen one side politically within Iran. If that's the case, this effort would have to graded FAIL.”

“Dianne Feinstein (D) California
She's at heart a pretty conservative Democrat that has to be pushed - sometimes very hard - to support even moderate Democratic initiatives.
Feinstein's against card check, and joined Schumer not so long ago in supporting Mukasey even after he knowingly dissembled about waterboarding being torture. Because of that vote alone I can never again in good conscious vote for Ms. Feinstein.”

“Large banks, insurance companies, & investment firms also seem entirely lacking in market discipline. They seem perfectly happy to make bad bets cumulatively in the trillions, and threaten the world with a global depression if they don't get bailed out.
And to further hedge their bets, their payoff for millions in lobbying is the placement of their executives at the head of the Treasury Dept in both GOP and Democratic administrations.
All the better to sack the Treasury.”
