“you receive more than $1.00 back from the federal govt. for every federal tax dollar you contribute...NY receives about .80 cents on every tax dollar we contribute....don't take my word for it...look it up....your K-12 schools are a disgrace....and your state has one of the highest illiteracy rates in the country.....also, your state has one of the highest obesity levels in the country....which contributes to the health care mess.....would be delighted to see the Tennessee (cept for Nashville and Beale Street in Memphis) along with Georgia, Miss. and Alabama....leave the union...i don't think we would try to stop you this time.....”

“nonsense, with the exception of La. and Tenn. (i will get to them later)....these states are either tourist or retirement havens....young people and those with active minds who don't spend their days golfing or going out for the early bird special...would most likely be miserable living in these places (maybe Hawaii is an exception)....La. and Tenn. well, they are in the deep South a culture which deplores direct communication of one's negative feelings....i also doubt if there were many poor people or minorities living in any of these states that are part of this "survey"”

TheBlackCat replied on Dec 18, 2009 at 12:19:13

“I totally agree with you about the deep south. People aren't very big on putting on a face that doesn't reflect reality. For instance at first in the deep south people seemed like the nicest folks I ever met...but then after I lived there for awhile I found many of them were only nice to you when they thought you were exactly like them. The second they found out you weren't a Christian, or conservative, or straight, or whatever, then the facade fell flat and they were the meanest people I'd ever known.

Similarly they aren't very honest with how the really feel. My father in law is the meanest, angriest man I've ever known but he'll insist that he is a jolly old man who feels sorry for all those bitter liberals.

But then again, there are parts of the deep south I love. My husband is from the deep south and he's great. and there are little beauties and joys to be found, and there ARE people who are genuinely nice accepting people. They just don't seem to be the majority.”

He replied, "It is because I can live anywhere in the world that I live in the Mississippi Delta."”

“sorry to inform you but display advertising is less than 25% of all revenue...advertisers do not get the results nor see the value.....search is king and then classified and recruitment.....the traditional business model of print will not translate to the web.....this is a huge problem for conglomerates and a great opportunity for upstarts that can figure out how to carve out a niche business.....”

Journalism 2009: Desperate Metaphors, Desperate Revenue Models, And The Desperate Need For Better Journalism

Commented Dec 02, 2009 at 09:39:13 in Media

“All the right points....but you neglect the reality that without a successful business model, credible content cannot survive on the web....somebody has to pay for it....the statistics regarding percentage web advertising increases are misleading because they are mostly tied to search and Google is the winner....i love the Huffington Post....but i doubt that it is making a profit..(some of us will pay to access it if you convert to a paid subscription model)..one of the most difficult business challenges is converting a customer that is used to getting your product for free, to paying for it.

traditional media made a many dumb decisions at the beginning of all this by not controlling their content on the web and ignoring the power and potential of it....it may be too late now to change habits...but it has happened in the past when superior content (HBO) successfully converted network television viewers to a paid subscription model....what s occurring here is an age old battle of content vs. distribution....and the answer is that they are dependent upon each other....if old man Murdoch pulls his content from Google there is a (slight) erosion to Googles value and Bing gains a marginal advantage....whatever happens, advertiser supported content is likely finished and the game is very interesting.”

inmyhumbleopinion replied on Dec 02, 2009 at 10:31:51

“But search is only part of the revenue story. There are still banner ads on all the sites that primary content creators and aggregators alike use to support content creation. It's no different than the TV networks charging for commercials in order to pay for the shows they create, while still having the content be free to consumers (or, nowadays, very inexpensive, due to digital cable). So if there's a gap in revenue, charge more to the advertisers.”

PerfumeisToxic replied on Dec 02, 2009 at 10:25:28

“The only possible business model in the long term is voluntary donations by appreciative consumers.

This is because technological advances will make it IMPOSSIBLE to deny access to any media content and "force" people to pay. Everything will be available free to whoever wants it.

It will take not that long for people to see the need to donate to those writers and creative people that they value.

It is slowly beginning to happen already, and is the only practical future model in the long term.”
