“Have you taken a look at our younger segments? No. A sizable number of kids can't even qualify for military service! 25% lack a high school diploma. 10% have at least 1 prior conviction. 27% are too fat. 32% have health issues other than fat. And take a look at the numbers related to education in the south! And then we have kids out of college with no job so they are forced to join the military. We'll just play police force for the world while our own kids get sucked into the gutter.

“I got an idea. We'll make a new currency, the american people currency, we'll keep our Constitution, with a few new rules (contributions gone, corporation charters educational only), we'll have new election, and we'll scrap all the sarbanes and mush law, we'll keep our safety nets, and viola. The financial "false" markets and their pets can pay to play in our real economy and they can sort out their financing with their japanese and chinese conspirators. How does that sound?”

“The financial economy is too busy. Got to spend 90 percent of the day clawing for your fee. And what does the financial economy make? Well big tall buildings in a desert or merge a big organization to fire a bunch of people. The financial economy gets to make their own credit and laugh at all the normal organizations that have to scrounge for disappearing profit and nonexistent asset turns.”

America Without a Middle Class
Commented Dec 03, 2009 at 22:26:26 in Business
“That is my hope and what I imagine. A new valuation system free of the old political jargon lead by real people, real leaders like Elizabeth Warren. We center on our education hubs, decide on fair base-line valuations, and provide all people the opportunity to contribute meaningfully. Presently, these "deal" in our "financial economy" are far to restrictive and given to far too few people, many have little to no special or selective merit.”

“"By 2020, the Chinese middle class will eclipse its American and European counterparts in sheer size," says Ming-Jer Chen. Now my question, how do we make this comparison? The American middle class is gone, now, and the Chinese middle class will grow to what size? We are talking a net lose for freedom, growth, real innovation as these set oligarchies tamp down disruptive technology and hand out scraps to the impoverished cohorts. The global system of valuation is broken.”

What's Happening To Women's Happiness?
Commented Sep 18, 2009 at 01:15:54 in Living
“I swear part of the reason is because women have higher propensity to get pushed into replicating other people's thinking and other people's expectations. Talking 9 to 5: Women and Men at Work (Tannen) and The Evolving Self (Csikszentmihalyi) do an insightful job of exploring happiness and interaction and expressing individuality. And while the United States has made progress, we still have a great deal to learn - many men still unconsciously ignore or place less value on insight from women.”

“it is largely an illusion created by lower relative values assigned to properties. when the cycle is down, the people at the bottom lose whatever they own(and even their lives or health). the wealthy see their portfolio shrink but end up in position to buy the property that the poor lose at a real discount. when the dust clears, without social or government or mob intervention, the wealthy own an even larger share of the real stuff out there- the land, the infrastructure.”

Shortly after she was named to head the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in 1996, Brooksley E. Born was invited to lunch by Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan.
The influential Greenspan was an ardent proponent of unfettered markets. Born was a powerful Washington lawyer with a track record for activist causes. Over lunch, in his private dining room at the stately headquarters of the Fed in Washington, Greenspan probed their differences.
“Well, Brooksley, I guess you and I will never agree about fraud,” Born, in a recent interview, remembers Greenspan saying.
“What is there not to agree on?” Born says she replied.
“Well, you probably will always believe there should be laws against fraud, and I don’t think there is any need for a law against fraud,” she recalls. Greenspan, Born says, believed the market would take care of itself.
For the incoming regulator, the meeting was a wake-up call. “That underscored to me how absolutist Alan was in his opposition to any regulation,” she said in the interview.
Over the next three years, Born, ’61, JD ’64, would learn first-hand the potency of those absolutist views, confronting Greenspan and other powerful figures in the capital over how to regulate Wall Street.

Republicans, and Romney and the rest, specifically care only about their political fortunes rather than finding common ground for health reform to bring the parity with rest of the modern world.”

The underlying principles of the "public option" is to force private insurers to bring down both expenditures and overhead costs in order to compete. Private insurers spend over 20%, I've heard, in just overhead (including exec salaries, of course). If there's either a better or cheaper way to enact that principle, by all means, share it! Medicare/Medicaid has done reasonably well; Medicare by the Feds is run better.”
