“That's very funny. Truth is for ideologues and the religious. I'm interested in scientific evidence.

You know, Senator Inhofe did say something to the effect that God would take care of climate change for us. Is that the kind of truth you're talking about?”

“Rhetticent, thanks for the post. I appreciate and understand your perspective. As I said, I used to live in Missouri, where coal is king and most special interests are committed to its use. Nevertheless, I don't believe that a "tiny elite" has pulled the wool over our eyes. Scientism doesn't work that way. Indeed, the fact that there is so much open debate is the very reason that these e-mails have spark controversy. However, it is really important to view these debates from the proverbial 50,000 feet, lest one get paralyzed by the data.

Speaking as one who has suffered through more than his share of ANOVAs, I can say that only a large, replicated body of evidence is worth talking about, and that has been supporting the notion of climate change for some time now.”

“Wow, we're debating climate change on this blog?

Are there any Oklahomans out there that can explain how Senator Inhofe maintains support? Because from outside of the state, he's just an all-around whack job. I used to live in Missouri, so I understand how it works, but it would still be interesting to hear from someone on the inside.”

Rhetticent replied on Nov 25, 2009 at 10:04:30

“Miles, from your perspective, he's a whack job. From my perspective, he's fighting to keep Cap and Trade from being implemented. He's a solid conservative with an excellent track record of voting the way his constituents want him to vote.

We're an oil and gas state. The vast majority of production here is provided by small, mom and pop companies, and there are thousands of people who support the industry in other businesses: transport, storage, well servicing, etc. Cap and Trade will decimate our economy. As a state, we are pushing hard for the adoption of a national policy of immediate conversion to natural gas: this would reduce CO2 emissions by at least 20% (which, although I don't believe in AGW, would be far more than cap and trade proposes), would reduce particulate emissions by 99%, would make us energy independent, and would keep our money at home for development of alternative energies. Along with Texas, our state has done more to begin implementation of the use of wind power than any other area: we have huge wind farms in the northwest part of the state, and are paying, by choice, higher utility bills to purchase the wind power to support construction of the transmission lines necessary to transport the power.

Inhofe is one of us, and the release of the emails is just more evidence, to us, of a tiny elite attempting to pull one over on everyone.

“I'm waiting for the Democrats to step forward with a more cohesive worldview. I appreciate the fact that they are a more diverse coalition than the GOP, but they do a very poor job of defining and defending core principles. One thing that really shocks me is that a lot of the internal, left-wing debate is over issues that are defined in the party platform. How in the world can you support caucus member who won't give procedural support to the platform? What is the purpose of having a party?

Sometimes the Democrats look like General Motors: they try to be all things to all people, and they wind up offering a mediocre, uninspiring product. I'm sure there are many - like me - who support them only because the GOP is an intellectual and policy nightmare, but it takes more than anti-GOP sentiment to lead. I'm still waiting for that crystal-clear message.”

“It's rather disingenuous to state that Obama has failed by not being more assertive and "owning" the legislation early in the process. After all, that was the strategy employed by President Clinton and it was a failure, a failure for which he drew much criticism. Such a claim is nothing more than armchair quaterbacking.”

Austintatious replied on Nov 23, 2009 at 16:07:55

“Actually, it's rather disingenuous to continue to make excuses for the failures in leadership of this President.

You conveniently forget the big difference between Clinton's and Obama's situations, re healthcare. There was clear and unambiguous polling evidence that the people would have supported this particular President at this particular time, on healthcare and a number of other issues. Times were quite different, Obama's election coming after 8 years of the Bush/Cheney dark ages. The American people were chomping at the bit for change.

Clinton never had that kind of popular support on healthcare. Healthcare reform was favored by a notable majority of the American public when Obama was elected; however, it was quite obvious, the congressional Dems being what and who they are, that it was only going to occur if Obama was out front, leading the way. That didn't happen and now the American people will suffer the consequences.”

“It used to be that the political dance was subtle and done "behind the curtain." Lately it has become lewd and performed on busy street corners. The problem is that most of the performers no longer care or understand that everyone finds it distasteful. Just because the pundits popularized Bismarck's comment about sausage-making, doesn't mean it isn't still ugly.

Politicians like Bill Clinton, Blanche Lincoln, Mary Landrieu and Joe Lieberman are so wrapped up in maintaining power - doing the dance - that they will sacrifice any principal as well as their own integrity. Everyone in the audience sees it and is disgusted. When will the actors realize it?”

“Microsoft has simply lost its way. They have been doing nothing innovative for the past two decades. Instead of trying to topple the iPhone, or the Apple Store, or Google, or the social networking site du jour, they need to focus on providing value in their core strengths. Has anyone worked with Exchange or SQL Server lately? You have to wonder why people would spend tens of thousands of dollars on their software when better open source code is available.”

“No one should be getting married anyway. If many of our friends, family, and neighbors are barred from the institution, then what does it say about the rest of us participating in it? Why would I get married and invite my gay friends to the wedding, a wedding they cannot have?”

GBGB replied on Nov 18, 2009 at 17:34:45

“I support gay marriage, but I have to respectfully disagree with the second part of your post (regarding inviting gay friends to a wedding).

When my wife and I got married, we had a ceremony and reception to celebrate the fact that we were in love and had decided to spend the rest of our lives together. We weren't celebrating the legal rights we had just acquired.

My gay friends can have a wedding, declare their love, and openly dedicate themselves to one another for the rest of their lives. While that won't provide them with the same legal rights as straight couples in most states (which is unfortunate), that doesn't mean they can't have a ceremony celebrating their love.”

In all honesty, I think it's bad for everyone, because one of the two major parties in this country is incapable of spelling the word debate, let alone having an intelligent one.”

Also, I understand that electronic networks are not private, but is this worse than teens getting naked at a party? What about being topless on a beach?
