Is This as Good as It Gets From Obama?

Commented Nov 03, 2009 at 13:31:23 in Politics

“Bill, do you really think "charging in there" would have been the prudent thing to do? Good grief, the well-funded opposition is doing everything they can to scare up the uninformed in this country as it is--and they are proving how easy it is to lead those s@p-he@ds around by the ear.

So your idea of effective use of political power is to just push your way over the top of everyone else??

Look behind the media hype--a lot is happening, and it is happening in the "right" way--not haphazardly.

This is a marathon, Bill, not a sprint.”

Hank007 replied on Nov 03, 2009 at 17:12:21

“Not to mention the well funded obstructionists in his own party. What makes the American system work (or not) are the checks and balances which limit the president's authority. It doesn't matter what Obama wants, it's what he can get through congress.”

rob2007 replied on Nov 03, 2009 at 15:17:20

“Your point is well-taken. A couple months ago Maher was saying he wished Obama would act more like Bush and simply push his agenda through. Maher qualifies his remarks here by noting he's not as smart as Obama and Emanuel, then promptly opines his strategy of how to get the job done. This is not dissimilar to A. Huff's constant preface of her every article with "Obama should..."

In my extensive travels I have viewed it to be a uniquely American attribute to want it all now. A collective compromise of attention span has resulted in Fox v. MSNBC engaging perpetual ping-pong battles of name calling instead of elevating the discourse substantively, with Keith descending into the bray by crowing about his superior ratings.”

SigonellaPC3 replied on Nov 03, 2009 at 14:58:39

“It doesn't have to be a marathon. Look at what was accomplished in the first 100 days of FDR... The people forced his hand, gave him no choice but to push against the corporatocracy that plagued Washington. We sit back and eat our french fries and buy $175 jeans for our bitchy daughters on credit. We get exactly what we deserve.”

Marine Commandant Defies White House on Gay Troops

Commented Nov 02, 2009 at 21:20:46 in Politics

“It will come from the congress as it always has--Dem and Repub.

I don't think the Commandant cares about appeasing anyone in congress.

He is stating a very common misinformed opinion about homosexuality.

And I still think, above all else, a policy that hurts way more WOMEN than men.

Imagine that.”

Lefort replied on Nov 03, 2009 at 07:17:59

“He is stating a very common misinformed opinion shared by the majority of conservatives and the religious right, who, typically, are the members of congress who support disproportionate funding for the military industrial complex.
Happy republicans= military job security.”

“There are people who want to make change, and I don't fault them for that. I just hate it when people get all crazy about what others do. I don't talk a lot about my food choices because I am not trying to change anyone--I just want to do things for myself. I would like to see more humane treatment of animals, though, and I think most people would come to the same conclusions about factory farming if the only knew the facts.

Peace. :-)”

“It is possible to be very well nourished on a plant-based diet. Often, young people who adopt vegetarianism are ALREADY predisposed to eating disorders. Correlation does not mean causation.”

DrP replied on Oct 29, 2009 at 21:30:15

“I raised my children on a very low-fat diet which was not strictly vegetarian, but I avoided serving a lot of meat because I was so fat phobic.
My daughter weighed 320 at age 16. She lost have her body weight over the next few years, and had to have major reconstructive surgery to remove the excess skin left after the weight loss. She is scarred for life, literally and figuratively. She struggles with bulimea. I believe with my whole heart that the low-fat diet caused her weight gain. She continues to have depression problems and I see a direct correlation to times when I notice she is eating a lot of carbs. (comfort food such as potatoes)
My son was diagnosed as "ADHD" and given all sorts of horrible drugs. He found pot did a great job of calming his anxiety and helped him be less distractable. He basically lost his adolescent to problems caused by his "ADHD," and drug use. When he was 20, he had an epiphany and cut out sugar, (especially energy drinks and sodas) and grains. It turns out that his anxiety and mood swings were directly related to blood sugar and insulin swings caused by his diet.
So, I believe that we have barely touched the surface on the medical "conditions" that are the result of high-carb diets - "type II diabetes," obviously, (with it's related problems of heart disease and obesity) but also depression, ADHD, eating disorders, anxiety, chronic fatigue....”

JulieDole replied on Oct 27, 2009 at 18:45:10

“"Possible" being the operative word.

Unfortunately, people aren't perfect, and veggies (esp vegans) run the risks of either not eating well enough because they forgot to mix the right proteins (etc) or becoming so over-fixated about "right diet" that they compulsively cross so many foods off their diets, they become orthorexic.

www.beyondvegetarianism.org is a great site where lots of well-spoken, former vegans, fruitarians, raw foodists, etc. deconstruct the vegan et al dogma.

A one stop sanity stop, written by those who walked the walk.”

“Animals are bred and raised for the purpose of human consumption. As consumption goes down, so will the numbers of animals. Look into factory farming.

Why do you see the issue from the point of "everyone" or "all" or "forever"???

We could all cut down on animal consumption.”

sadwitness replied on Oct 27, 2009 at 18:46:16

“Ahhh I see- it is because I made the assumption that there is an ultimate goal of the vegan/vegetarian movement to have all people everywhere not eat meat. My apologies if that came off as an assumption of motives, it was really drawn from my personal experience. I have some friends who are vegan and some who are vegetarian and their view point has always seemed to me to be that no human should consume animal meat/products. Thank you for helping me to bridge the gap here. I was confused.

I agree wholeheartedly, as I said in my post, that factory farms are harmful and wasteful. If the viewpoint here is that limited meat consumption that does not come from factory farms is a trend to work toward. I am already there and have been all of my adult life. In fact, I seldom eat in restaurants and never eat fast foods because they support big industry farming and help aid in deforestation. it seems that though we choose different food items we are not so far away from agreement and understanding. Thank you for helping me to understand : )”

Stay where you are Joe Biden. Let's see what happens in the next few weeks.”
