Getting the Government We Seem to Want
Commented Jan 07, 2010 at 11:55:55 in Denver
“You have that backwards. Military spending $965 Billion. Human resources $789 Billion. Social Security and Medicare are taxed separately from income taxes, and should not be included as part of how our INCOME taxes are spent. The military is getting about half of our tax dollars.”

“I was quoting the numbers from the CBO.
I understand your point about SS and Medicare, but it's not as clean as you imply. Both SS and Medicare run a deficit that must be made up by money from the general funds.”

“"Once people take responsibility for themselves and not look to the governmnet for their daily bread then we can be great again."
Which "people" are you talking about? Regular people like your neighbors? Or the corporate "persons" who get a great deal of largesse at the government tit. Regular people are more productive now than they were a decade ago. And for less money. Do you think farm subsidies actually go to farmers? The lion's share goes to Big AgriBusiness. Corporate personhood allows the wealthy to stay on the government dole and people like you think that the poor, who use programs like medicaid are the problem. Poor blind fool!”

“Well... about 60% of the federal budget, goes to Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, Welfare, HHS, and HUD. About 20% goes to the military. That only leaves around 20% for everything else and the "tit" to which you refer. Pardon the expression, but that's a relatively small tit.”
Sick with Terror: Inadequate Health Care Kills 45,000 Americans Per Year

“Yeah, rex, I too am disheartened. I have arrived at the belief that the so-called HCR that is happening in DC is just kabuki theater. The end was already decided upon by the new aristocracy. The rest of it is just show, put on to make us think that somebody might actually do what is right by the American people, not just to expand the profit margins of the very people who have caused this situation. Taxpayer money flowing from the US Treasury into the coffers of for-profit insurers is NOT reform.... it is fascism. And at its root is GREED.”
Y3rMawm replied on Jan 06, 2010 at 18:29:48
“Yes, however greed is as human a breathing. What failed is the natural check on greed - risk (fear). Fear of failure must be restored. The backstops allowing losses to be socialized need to end because they neutralize the fear mechanism. ..a survival mechanism, and makes it easier to catch the wild pigs.”

“I agree. US corporations no longer know how to make a profit without a government handout. Just more of our upside down system. I want a government that has the chutzpah to tell special interest (corporate and 2%ers) to take a hike and move to the back of the line. They've been at the front of the line for 30+ years and have taken everything for themselves. It is time for America to make a HUGE 180 and take care of the majority instead of the minute minority!”

How do we persuade good and honest people to run in our party? I'd love nothing more than to field a viable candidate to challenge the culture of corruption in DC.”

There are no cost controls, Big Insurance retains its exemption from anti-trust laws. How, in any way, shape or form, is this reform?”

Embracing Teenage Sexuality: Let's Rethink the Age of Consent
Commented Jan 02, 2010 at 12:16:46 in Politics
“When my grandparents were married during the great depression, my grandfather was 28 and my grandmother was 14. My grandfather was working on my great-grandfather's farm on the day my grandmother was born! I don't know if it was an economic decision (one less mouth to feed) by my great-grandfather or if they had a true love thing going on at the time, but my point is that in our further enlightened society, my grandfather would be a pedophile.”
brandon102 replied on Jan 03, 2010 at 10:54:57
“I think your point is good; so much of this is perception. America is a conservative place to be right now, and any sex is absolutely a taboo subject. I suspect many parents would rather try to explain quantuum mechanics to their kids than the basics of sex. We are bombarded by sexual optics and comments but keep the real thing at arms length. Some countries inject a bit of reality and objectivity into these discussions, but not us. We're more inclined to go with the (last) Pope, whose position was that it's better to not wear a condom, catch AIDS and die (married or unmarried - - family planning is just not a thing for catholics) than to invest in a trojan or two. Sad.”
MJinCanada replied on Jan 02, 2010 at 13:34:12
“Good point. And at the time, what really mattered was whether your grandpa would have been considered a decent-enough man and a good provider and if your grandma seemed physically mature enough and could cook and keep house. Some people would have clucked their tongues at the age difference and that would have been it.”
been2there replied on Jan 02, 2010 at 12:57:55
“True consent is, to some extent, part of the cultural milieu. 14 and 28 would be questionable, but, since they were married, not pedophilic.”

“The two-party system is so entrenched, it seems impossible to field a viable third party. That is one area where both parties will work to gut any meaningful change in the way America does politics. Sadly, without the corporate donors, no viable third party will ever get up and running. I would LOVE to have the choice of a candidate who is not beholden to corporate cash. I just don't see how it can happen.”

“I challenge you to look at the history of Social Security and Medicare and how these cornerstones of social policy came to be. The full flowering of this legislation happened over many years. The initial bills that became law affected only a very small number of people. They were amended over time to apply to more and more citizens. There is no reason to believe that the health care legislation is seen as a fait accompli, never to be revisited.”

The job became his and no others. Any mistakes made by the former administration is irrelevant. If Bush can be blamed for everything that doesn't fit into the Obama book of mistakes, then we are in a sad state of affairs. Man up and take the responsibilities of your job and stop conveniently blaming someone else.”

The Corporatists are literally k*lling Americans to appease the greedy and soulless Military Industrial complex described by Dwight D, Eisenhauer. I can't imagine that this can go on much longer before it reaches a tipping point. I was so jazzed in Nov. after the big victories for the Dems, and now am abysmally disappointed to the point of wanting a new and better party than the Corporatist Dems.”
