Infant Bed-Sharing On The Rise, Despite SIDS Risks (STUDY)

Infant Bed-Sharing On The Rise, Despite SIDS Risks (STUDY)

Commented Oct 1, 2013 at 18:09:34 in Parents

“My mom had my crib right next to my parents bed. I don't know how she did it with my siblings. I was her first child and so she was extremely protective of me to begin with. She said she barely let me out of her sight and would never let me go to the backyard on my own. She would later tell me that by the time my youngest sibling came along; she was fine with him in diapers crawling around in the backyard. She was so protective of me until her dying day. I miss her.”

“I was lucky as my parents never ever did that to me. I hate when parents do that to their older children. I think it just brings resentment. I also did not have to babysit my siblings either. I had three very rambunctious younger brothers and there is no way my parents would have left me alone with them. I adore my younger siblings. They really were not all that bad growing up except for when my brothers would take my dolls and remove their legs and arms. They would then put the dolls legs in the arm sockets and the arms in the leg sockets or chase me around the yard with a mouse. I had a good childhood.”

“I was also fine with my younger siblings. I was lucky though as I was a bit on the spoiled side because I was the oldest. My own room, daddy's girl, got to pick what movies we went to go and see, got to pick the family pet and so forth.”

“I just mentioned this on another site yesterday. I cried when my first child went off to pre-kinder. I had trouble parting with her. When my second (youngest) went off to school, I was so ready to get him out the door. I would not do a happy dance, but I can understand why some parents may do a little dance on their kids first day of schoo.”

“I am going to respectfully disagree with you. Blacks have the same opportunities to go and get a college education so they do not have to fight for a job with "cheap green card workers" as you put it. I am not saying a four year college. There are junior colleges that are quite inexpensive and many have financial grants or aids that will help. From there on a person can transfer to a four year college if they'd like. People need to help themselves.”

“It's cute. My brothers use to annoy me by taking my dolls and taking the dolls' arms and putting them in the leg sockets and the legs in the arm sockets. They did all sorts of stuff to my toys. The funny thing is that I might have been annoyed by what they did, but I never snitched on them or tried to get back at them. We had a great childhood (along with our sister). I have no complaints.”

“I think her parents were being a bit too intrusive. She has every right to live her life in a healthy manner. I am sure there is more to this article than what was written. She sounds like she is an only child. My sister often joked that she was going to follow her firstborn to college. She adores her daughter, but she knew when it was time to let her go.”

“I don't know how parents who lose a child continue to go on, but I know they have to especially if there are other children that need their parents. My brother and his wife almost lost their firstborn in an accident. She was only six and my brother almost died trying to save her. She is ten years old now and the light of her parents eyes. She is a wonderful older sister to her younger brother and sister. I promise you that you will always have your little girl.”

“I adored my dad when I was a little girl. Of course, I also loved my mom but my dad was everything to me. My mom use to tell me that whenever my dad would leave for work I would cry. Whenever she would leave, I would run and grab her coat and purse to give to her. As I got older, it changed and I ended up becoming attached to both my parents. I am sure you will be fine. Just love your children and be the best parent you can be. I always say parents are the ones that will either make or break their children. I was lucky. My siblings and I had fantastic parents.”

“My mom always said that her first child was her greatest teacher. Everything she has learned about being a mother, she learned because she loved my sister so much. Of course, she loved the rest of us, but she always said that my sister taught her how to love unconditionally, patience, how to be a nurse and so on and so forth. My sister has since said the same thing about her son. I wish my mom was still with us. She was wonderful.”

“I am the oldest, and my mom did leave me the bulk of her money. The only reason I think she did this is because I feel that she felt I was the responsible one of my siblings. My two youngest brothers are a bit on the flaky side and the oldest of my younger brothers is married, and I do not believe she wanted my sister-in-law to touch that money. I shared the money with my sister as she and I were the ones who took care of both my parents when they were sick. I would gladly give every cent back if I could just have both my parents back.”

“My mom worried about her children until the day she passed away. She would always have me call her as soon as I arrived to work her because I had to get to work so early in the morning. And it being Father's Day, my dad was just as wonderful. The day before I moved from California to Chicago, my dad went out to the backyard and cried. He was ecstatic when I moved back to California. I just wish everyone is blessed by having wonderful parents. It makes a huge difference in a child's life and it carrys on for the rest of that child's life.”

“I loved this article. I was ready to write something negative just because I thought the article was going to go in a different direction. My sister always wanted a daughter but she ended up with two boys. First one, her "precious perfect first-born" as she loves to call him. Second one her "rambunctious rascal" as she calls him. She said to me once, "as much as I wanted a little girl, I cannot imagine my life without my two boys". You love what you get.”

“Post pardum depression can be scarry. A friend of mine suffered from a mild form of this after the birth of her second child. She got treated for it and decided not to have any more children. She was fortunate because her husband was so supportive and really stepped in and helped her through this. The only negative is that she said she could not form an early bond with her second child like she did with her first.”

“Great article. I always roll my eyes when I hear someone go on and on about their kid. I truly do not care. My god-mother was like this. She had two kids, and she would drive my mother insane the way she would go on about her two kids. And when the grandchildren came, there was no stopping her. My poor mom.”
