“I disagree. She is not an attempted murderer. The baby was JUST born. Most likely the mother is some 14 year old with no car or way to get to an appropriate place and on top of that is confused, scared, hurt, bleeding and feeling alone. Or maybe the mother gave birth and the father or someone else took it away.

Seriously people, let's all just jump OFF the blame train and be thankful this infant is alive and unharmed by what has happened to it.”

“Hmm.. why do you suppose no one calls them out on their lies? If they are so blatant and so horrendous, why wouldn't President Obama and VP Biden call out these terrible lies in debate? Is it that they aren't smart enough to know the facts and blow their opponents out of the water? Is it because they in fact are liars as well and can't risk blowing the whistle on another? Or maybe it's because there is no lie to refute and to do such a thing would tumble the house of cards down upon their own false position.

Only a liar would constantly claim another is lying yet never show evidence of the lies.”

“His comments aren't racist. The joke is not funny, but it's probably true. His chances WOULD be better if he was any other race because so many people are caught up in race. He is judged on the fact that he is white... in fact, he's called white like it's an insult. If anyone went off about how black Obama is, most of the people here would be screaming about racist, white, America.

Is it ok then to be racist against white people but taboo for every other race? I hear it said over and over that Obama has the black vote, the latino vote, as if we are all separate entities instead of all countrymen.

I have news for you all...There is no more shame in being white than in being any other race. Obama had just as many privileges as Romney growing up.. and he's just as rich. BOTH candidates are out of touch with what it is to be a working class American.

Be proud of your heritage, your family, but stop separating us all by color.. We are ALL American, and we need to get the hell over race, black, white or whatever.. and start looking deeper.”

“I disagree. The golden rule is something you need to learn from your parents. Letting the school raise your children is how we ended up with a video like this in the first place. I understand parents have a tough time with working full time and the daily grind of your life, but if you cant take the time to RAISE your children into productive, decent human beings... don't have children in the first place.

Yes, kids DO act differently at school, but it is lazy parenting to allow the school to take care of teaching your children how to behave. If you cant find the time or have the guts to properly teach your own child.. again, I say, don't be a parent. Get a freaking cat instead.”

"It is clear that there is enormous potential for good here. To be able to diagnose problems that can be treated in the womb and yes, to possibly end a pregnancy that would end in terrible pain and heartbreak for the parents as well as the infant. But there is equal potential for abuse with this. Who gets to decide what traits and problems outweigh the potential of the human life waiting to get it's chance? "”

But there is equal potential for abuse with this. Who gets to decide what traits and problems outweigh the potential of the human life waiting to get it's chance?

The average person sees a person with a disability and they are afraid and disturbed. They look at these people through a filter of their own perspective.. and for the average person the thought of being in a wheelchair or being blind or being retarded is terrifying. So through this filter it is reasonable to think that these conditions should be stopped because they are too hard to live with.

From the perspective of the person with the 'defect' most of them would prefer the defect to not being born at all. It is the 'normal' people who can't deal with it.

Also, the movie Gattaca addresses this moral question. I recommend it to any of you who think there is no down side to this science.”

Teej Gbayea on Jun 9, 2012 at 18:21:42

“Of course there are no down sides to this science, but the up sides outweigh them in a mighty excess. Cutting through the simple moral pandering would be arduous, but honestly for the better. A simple line between what is unwanted in an expected child, and what is unmanageable in a child is obviously the first step.”

CupofClarity on Jun 9, 2012 at 16:01:01

“Good points. I would also add that since we humans have (every time throughout history that I can imagine) "weaponized" any advance that could be used for war, we should beware. From fire to medical research, if it can harm, we've done it. "Compassion traits" removed, etc. Perfect warriors. "Weaponizing our evolution," so to speak. There's horrible potential, and if our violent history is any indication, it's not a matter of "if," but "when." We should be very careful.”

“This is a matter of perspective. Who decides what defects should be unborn? What if there is a chance the child will be born with a heart defect that may kill her before she's 5 but may not? What if the child is going to be born blind or deaf? Do you think blind people are so miserable they wish they hadn't been born?

This is a question of what we consider valuable in a life. I am actually pro choice but I am sick over the way so many couples/women use it to escape being responsible for their actions. If this technology can be used to HELP a fetus overcome defects I applaud the efforts. I just don't want to see it used as a means to create the perfect society with perfect babies. Diversity is what makes us strong as a species and hardship is what helps us learn and grow.

I think people who want to abort a less than 'perfect' baby because someone wants a little "we wuvs our flawless little doll much better than we would have loved her if she'd been born without arms or blind" are the monstrous ones.”

WilliamTheV on Jun 11, 2012 at 05:31:09

“and what if the child has a lifespan that lasts at most days? and those few days are incredibly painful? If there is a fatal congenital defect then all the more reason to detect it early, especially if there are treatment options in utero, and the mother should have ALL the information possible when making a decision.”

And to comment on this post myself... yes, I agree that 16 is old enough to decide if you are ready for sexual behavior, but it is more likely a manipulation when an adult seduces a teenager. It's creepy and criminal.

When you add the fact that she is his MOTHER, it is extra disturbing and dangerous, psychologically as well as physically (if they should end up getting pregnant it can have drastic effects on any child born of this union). In my opinion, we should all be allowed to say whatever we want.. whatever we think is right, funny, wrong etc. And we can all be free to dislike, approve, be angry or laugh as needed. This is what free speech is all about.”

With the explosion of weight control drugs and programs, not to mention the social pressure and media hitting us harder and harder with all these messages about how unhealthy and ugly fat is, you would think no one at all would be fat! It seems to me, shaming people about their bodies, encouraging this obsession with eating/dieting and being the perfect size is causing the very problem everyone is so concerned about. Perhaps it is time to change our tactics?”

I was considered a lazy kid back in the 70s, but my mom didn't allow us in the house during the day (the norm where I lived back then) so we ran around all day. We had no video games or access to snack foods. Totally different than now with video games, cable & the internet keeping the kids at home staring at technology and eating snacks.”
