A Funny Thing Happened on My Way to Talk About Afghanistan

“It's the classic "chicken and egg": are we getting stupider because they focus on this fluff, or do they show it because we're stupid and watch it?

Why Joe Biden Should Resign

Why Joe Biden Should Resign

Commented Oct 14, 2009 at 15:27:35 in World

“Biden resigning would force out a President, all right, but it wouldn't be Karzai.
The Repubs would swoop in and exploit this "chaos" among the Dems, win seats in 2010 and we'd likely have President Romney in 2012. Are you kidding? Thomas Friedman pretty much had it right in today's NY Times: we should put pressure on Karzai to end corruption, and if he refuses, then remove our troops, because with a corrupt govt in place, who and what are we exactly supporting? But Biden quitting? Disaster!”

NHBill replied on Oct 14, 2009 at 15:40:36

“Biden Resigns! is a great rubric for AH to sell her point of view.
It has zero likelihood of actually happening.
But some very important points are being made here!”

“"Pull the plug" is exactly what you want to do on 50 million Americans without health insurance and another 100 million underinsured or with "pre-existing conditions" that will allow their greedy insurers to boot them from coverage as soon as they get a serious illness.
But as long as a Republican wins, who gives a crap about real people's lives, right?”

Obama Is Right, His Critics (Right and Left) Are Wrong

Commented Sep 01, 2009 at 13:46:16 in Politics

“I generally agree with you about Obama--or maybe it's wishful thinking.
The one caveat, Frank, is that he let the Repubs steal the debate, without clearly spelling out the issues.
He needs to show who runs the real "death panels", remind people about the Repubs making similar squeals in support of Wall Street and our "healthy" economy last year, about their desire to privatize Social Security (can you imagine if they were successful?), and to not fall for their crap again.
Until then, I reserve judgement on Obama's "chess master wisdom."”

Why Britain Should Apologize for Releasing the Lockerbie Killer -- and Why it Won't

Commented Aug 25, 2009 at 14:49:47 in World

“Good idea, change the subject. The man murdered Americans, so let's have mercy on the poor fellow, right? England increasingly caves in to Muslim extremists. They now say Libya promised to "low key" his return, and were "shocked" when the mass murderer was greeted like a conquering hero.
Compassionate? Please.”

Lou Goodman replied on Aug 25, 2009 at 15:57:12

“Unfortunately we'll never know who really killed those poor people.
I can't believe that some people have the nerve to be outraged at what the Scottish / British Government MAY have done to secure oil rights. Let's have a look at the glorious history the US has in this area shall we?
Does this make this situation any less distasteful? No. But, really, grow the hell up, the US is the worst country for doing this (starting a war over oil - how many people have died?) so don't start bleating if other countries appear to do it. It's how the world works whether we like it or not.
The really sad thing is that this is causing the families pain again. Additionally, it's likely that the man convicted was probably innocent and only convicted to appease the US in the first place. If that is the case then he deserves to be able to die with his family, as with so many other things involving government - we'll never know the truth”

“1) Yes, it is safe to put money in the bank.
2) Single payer? No, that was Clinton. Obama knew that single payer, although probably the best system, had zero chance of passage.
3) It's easy to be "tough" from the outside. Just look at the right. Since the age of McGovern, the smug left has cost the Dems election after election with their unyielding "purity", and voting for such self-righteous candidates as Ralph Nader.
These are the same people who said there was really no difference between Gore and Bush.
Still think so?”

The Answer Man: Bill Clinton's Comeback

New Rule: Bill Maher Must Win an Emmy!

Commented Aug 04, 2009 at 13:41:33 in Home

“The networks babble about "must see" TV, but there is only one show on the air that merits this: Maher's.
His adult, thoughtful take on things leaves the other shows in the dust, including Stewart's. It's great watching a thoughtful, independent adult say things clearly and forcefully, with no preciousness or self-importance. While he sometimes also reveals his weird ideas about relationships and sex (love seems to be a foreign cocept to him), nobody's perfect, and even that makes me laugh. As icing on the cake, Maher has more guts than anyone on TV.
To make us laugh, make us think and make us grow--that's it's own reward, isn't it? Who gives a crap about the clueless jerks who give out "Emmys?"”

Faint Praise

Commented Aug 03, 2009 at 14:52:32 in Politics

“The Republicans have the simplest talking point:
"Government takeover!"
The Democrats must come up with an equally clear talking point, easily remembered, and here it is:
"Don't let the Repubs destroy America!" (they came close last year--don't get fooled again!)"

A bit more detailed: "The Republicans were in bed with Wall Street when it almost plunged the nation into a recession. McCain said there was "no problem." Bush wanted to privatize Social Security. Where would you be now if he did?"
You thought your stocks, 401K were safe a year ago? How about when they lost about 25%-50% of their value?
The same is true now for health care. You think you are in good shape. But wait until you get sick. The system is about to collapse. Repubs are in bed with the insurance companies, who will drop you as soon as they can, while doubling your rates.
Obama pulled us from the brink regarding the economy. He was right. He is also right about health care. The bottom line?
Don't let the Repubs screw you again!”

“Democrats have been in control of congress since the '06 elections and BOTH parties are in bed with lobbyist. Check www.opensecrets.org for the proof. Try www.healthtransformation.net for some real reform ideas on healthcare. I don't trust the same clowns, (republican and democrat), that were responsable for stimulus to take on healthcare. I'm also surprised that so many are actually convinced that the same clowns responsable for all the "pork" can be trusted with our healthcare.”

My Interview with President Obama on Health Care Reform

Commented Jul 17, 2009 at 13:26:15 in Politics

“Serious health care reform is obviously needed, but those who profit from the status quo are already flooding the airwaves with propaganda about "long lines" in Canada, "socialism," etc. It's time for the Democrats and those who care about the common good to run counter ads, explaining the facts. People are getting brainwashed, and if this keeps up, the bill will be watered down to uselessness.”

Shattering the Right vs. Left Prism Once Again: The Wall Street Journal Goes After Goldman and the Bank Bailout

Commented Jul 16, 2009 at 15:03:11 in Business

“As tough as it might be to confront for the short term, banks must be allowed to fail. When they operate under differerent rules than everyone else under capitalism, they have no fear, no shame and "the market" becomes a sick joke.
It is useful to think of who led the nation under the debacle of the past decade. George W. Bush is very much like his his Wall Street friends: he failed in business venture after business venture, and was continually bailed out. He was bulletproof, as are these Wall Street firms.
Unfortunately, we aren't.”
