Bury This Book! Amazon.com and the Gun Issue

Commented Dec 04, 2009 at 14:23:44 in Books

“Dennis,

Since 80% of Americans oppose the currently legal practice of selling private firearms to other individuals absent a background check (or in your terms, the Gunshow Loophole(tm)), wouldn't it be prudent for the anti-gun camp to support allowing non-FFL access to NICS?

Since it seems that there may be some real room for compromise on this issue, why does the Brady Campaign oppose this?”

“3rd or 4th attempt now....

Yes, Dennis. With Wayne LaPierre playing the part of General Pickett and his 4 million member army closely behind, we have been planning our attack for years. We have been scouring Al Gore's internets looking for the right time to launch our salvo. Ah! Alas! We can see the whites of their eyes! We are converging on the Amazon.com battlefield! Three round bursts are being fired in all directions....One Star! One Star! One Star!.....Hogwash! Hogwash! Hogwash! Our NRA membership dues the only glue holding the pro-gun pincer movement together!

Dennis, did you ever stop to think that, instead of your delusional "organized movement conspiracy" , that the majority of the American public is simply tired of the attack on our constitutional rights and starting to recognize that the anti-gun movement is based on fabricated statistics, emotionalism, and a proven history of ineffectiveness?

You don't need to be part of any organized movement to smell dung stuck to your boots when you step in it my friend”

"Your view of All African American has bee conjured up by the Media and those of us who are productive members of society are contantly demonized and criticized."

If you read my original post, i made no allusion to my "view of all AA's." what i simply pointed out is that the creation of jobs is secondary to addressing the social issues infecting our urban populace.

What i find ironic is that many AA's simply stereotype all caucasions as unsympathetic to AA issues, in much the same way many caucasions stereotype AA's.

You should be proud of being a good parent and achieving what you and your family have achieved. But just because a caucasion disagrees with a view or position of an AA, doesn't mean we fit the stereotype many AA's automatically assume we fit.”

Ever see Jackson or Sharpton lead a protest because of black on black crime? I haven't. There's always something else to blame; guns, the government, unemployment, etc....

We take responsibility for our actions as well as those actions of others that make our load so much heavier.

All that we ask is that you would take your foot off of the necks of our people who lack the strength to continue the fight and need our assistance to get them through.

Your utter ignorance about our prominent African American leaders is insulting. Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Minister Farakhan has done a lot to shed light on black on black violence.

And for him to come out now, in his old age and tell us how we should talk and dress, was a little much for me. He wouldn't shake Wanda Sykes hand at some award show I was watching . I thought it was rude and arrogant.. I wonder how many racist white people he refused to shake their hands. I don't disagree with every thing he said because I think a lot of what he said had merit. But I don't have to conform to what he believe. If I want to use slang with my friends that is my choice and part of our culture. Unlike Bill Cosby, I am not ashamed of my culture and I do not need to assimilate into his white world to be a worth while person. Our country have done and will continue to do some horrible things to people who aren't white males. Now you can continue to stick your head up you @$$ and say it isn't true, but that doesn't change the facts. After all, white people committed genocide on the Native Americans and today they are still treated as if they are INVADERS in THEIR OWN COUNTRY. If anyone had room to bitch it would be Native Americans. But since they killed off most of them , I guess it's just water under the bridge, right?? NOT!!!!!”

If you actually listened to their speeches that don't get covered by our sensationalized media, you'd know this.

And you also need to educate yourself on WHY there are some in the black community who have issues with Cosby's rant that he made a few years back. During his stint in the spotlight, he NEVER spoke on racial issues. Not racism, not discrimination, nothing. Then, all of a sudden, he's in a rage over black baby names, and baggy jeans. If you were a black leader and spent years trying to get a prominent black who has mass appeal to speak on these issues and they refused, then they pop up on some rant, you might take issue with that also.”

But to believe that increasing spending on education will magically correct the years of learned behavior from not having a solid male role model in the home is naive.

I live in one of those neighborhoods you speak of. There's no way I'll believe that corrections to infrastrucure will change ingrained behavior and attitude.

Ever hear of "you can lead a horse to water, but can't make 'em drink?"”

MoeB replied on Dec 02, 2009 at 14:28:31

“Increased spending is only part of the solution...it cannot work alone. But try learning in a classrooms like I had in HS where there were 35 kids in a class, 30 desks, and 20 textbooks. Telling these children to change their attitude and behavior won't change that.

Trying to get many (not all) of these kids to see the value of an education is where we should start. Too many of them live in areas where they don't SEE what an education gets them. There's not much if any job opportunities in their areas. Too many of them live in areas where education is not their primary concern, but SURVIVAL is (and in some cases, by any means necessary).

So yes, infrastructure, at least in my opinion, IS a major issue that needs to be addressed. Teaching parents to be more responsible for how their children turn out is another issue that needs to be addressed...in any event, if we are being realistic, we should note that these issues probably won't get totally resolved in one generation.”

Statistics show significant disproportion of single parent households in the african american and latino communities-

Statistics show significant disproportion of african americans being offenders AND victims of violent crimes, 6 and 7 times higher respectively than whites-

You also have five emotionally disturbed kids without wrap around so the class room is a madhouse. Money, for example doesn't help in situations like that you need infrastructure, smart classrooms of small sizes, tech for directed and differentiated learning, you don't need 2,000 dollars more a kid you need 25,000 more a kid or a couple rebuild of the system. Even though your "Gun Show Loophole" meme has been debunked on numerous occasions (all transactions, at a gun show or not, which go through FFL's, must include a background check. Private sales between individual citizens, do not need background checks, which is not exclusive to gun shows), let's assume for a moment that we would like to see background checks on ALL sales, through an FFL or not.

Assuming this compormise, why doesn't the Brady Campaign or any other anti-gun organization support the extention of NICS to ALL individuals wanting to sell a firearm, and not just FFL's?

Oh, that's right, because that doesn't really support your true agenda, does it?

You see, folks. If the Brady's were THAT concerned about the "gun show loophole" they would be doing anything in their power to make available, the same NICS they helped implement, to ANYONE wanting to sell or transfer a firearm.

For "those of us who think only about guns all day", can you please explain to us why Henigan, Helmke, Sugarmann, and the likes continually fail to mention that Hasan was being eye-balled by Big Brother months before this tragedy for his possible ties to radical Islam? Not to mention the fact that Hasan's CCW permit had no bearing on the shootings, since it was a GFZ and the permit had no relevance to the actual situation?

I know your target audience might not care about these key facts routinely ommitted by your peers, but don't you think they deserve some consideration?”
