Media Fail: Kimberly Munley Did Not Bring Down Fort Hood Killer

Media Fail: Kimberly Munley Did Not Bring Down Fort Hood Killer

Commented Nov 12, 2009 at 21:00:18 in Media

“Of course it does. Why was his presence white-washed? Why when we now know who is the primary hero, is he a name without an image? In part it is because he's not a woman and there's something very attractive because it is so new of a woman stopping the bad guy in the midst of mass murder. I guess a black man doing it, not so much.”

“Why is it that I can go to Google and see that Officer Mark Todd is a black man and not see a trace of that here?”

“My first inclination is why is the race of the shooter who brought down the killer Hasan important? But, then, again, America's racist past rears its ugly head to remind me. Just can't escape this recurring pathology of America's racist past. It'll haunt this country possibly forever. Thanks investors/shippers/traders of the American slave trade, Thomas Jefferson, plantation slave owners, bombers, lynchers, Jim Crowers, KKK, NeoNazis and all other racists for the awful legacy you've left this country.”

Why Joe Biden Should Resign

Why Joe Biden Should Resign

Commented Oct 14, 2009 at 15:50:35 in World

“Of course Biden should not resign. His opinion is known, there will be no need for a later mea culpa. He should remain to do what he should do, speak the truth to power from a position no other American has. Obama is no dummy, if he goes another route and Joe is proven right, he will listen to him a little closer next time. But remember, Joe is not 100% right on these wars. He was after all in favor of the 2nd Iraq war. He is in an invaluable position. To resign because the President chooses a different way to prosecute the war, only weakens the President and weakens our nation. Biden should speak his mind and always be at the President's side to provide an independent point of view.”
Why We're Breaking With the Blue Dogs on the Public Option

Why We're Breaking With the Blue Dogs on the Public Option

Commented Oct 14, 2009 at 02:29:13 in Politics

“Social Security, Medicare and unemployment insurance are not individual rights. They do require contributions of others who may or may not directly benefit to the same degree but assist in the overall good of the nation. There's zero chance even this Supreme Court would find Social Security, Medicare or unemployment insurance are unconstitutional.”

RTOTrainer replied on Oct 14, 2009 at 10:27:07

“And that's not the issue at hand. Rather whether the Consitution would countenance an "individual mandate" or a "public option." A law requiring everyone to purchase a healthcare policy--in essence a breathing license--or to require that the labor of one group of people to simply be made the property of others.

So I agree that Social Security, Medicare, and Unemployment are a separate issue. They do not bear on the current subject.”

“Unconstitutional? In what alternative universe? A woman's right to chose, a woman's right to vote, a slave's right to freedom (without economic redress to his/her 'owner'), social security, Medicare? Are these also unconstitutional?”

RTOTrainer replied on Oct 13, 2009 at 21:54:43

“It's not about individual rights, it's about enumerated powers of government.

But as long as you bring up individual rights, healthcare is not a principle, a duty or a material thing. What it is is the product of the labor of individuals. What we decided, at least with the passage of the 13th amendment, was that no one has the right to the labor of another.”

What Is a Book?

Commented Sep 26, 2009 at 22:35:02 in Technology

“I have two Kindles (the K2 and the DX). Love the DX (K2 is for emergency backup). Every month or so I have a small discussion with my wife about getting rid of some of my 1000+ books (I usually go Charleton Heston, "From my cold dead hands."). Right now there are 180 books on my DX and repeated on the K2. A lot are of the reference type: Complete Works of Shakespeare, Collected Poetry of Yeats, Rhyming Dictionary, etc. And then there are the newspapers and blogs, pounds and pounds of non-digitized materials digitiized in a 2 pound package (counting cover). Amazing. When my next "book" is published, I will ask the publisher to make it available in both hard and E format even though royalties on e-format delivered "books" are about 10% of their hard cover fraternal twin. That's a fight for another day. The future calls. We can either answer/contribute or be run over. As to what's a book? When writing went from tablet to scroll to page to e-format, are we not still reading? If I'm reading a tablet or a page I'm still mentally embracing a writer's gift. A gift that in all liklihood was conceived as a "book."”

Roy Blunt (R-MO) Tells Racism-Tinged Monkey Joke at DC Conference

Commented Sep 21, 2009 at 22:02:16 in Politics

“There is so much wrong with this man's 'joke.' First, we have this benign, idealic armed occupancy (it's called colonialism, sir) much like slavery on the ole plantation where everyone is happy and knows their place except for the monkeys who just want to mess everything up because that's their nature and there's nothing decent folks can do about it but accept their childishness and go on about the adult business of occupation. I'd like to say I'm shocked, but after all this is a Republican from a border state (the home of the Klan). I guess I'm just grateful Grand Wizard Blunt left his robes at home.”

Why I Loved Obama's Health Care Speech

Commented Sep 10, 2009 at 02:26:11 in Politics

“After a hot summer in the sand box, adult supervision was required. Passionate, intelligent adult supervision was given. Eight months in and we are seeing a young President measuring greatness.”

Philament replied on Sep 10, 2009 at 03:34:13

“Agreed. Seriously who are the adults in the Republican party these days? I may not agree with most of their views, but it would certainly be reassuring to see GOP leaders who aren't afraid to stand up to the crazy in their party and help return sanity and calm to the debate. How about Olympia Snowe from Maine or Governor Tim Pawlenty?”
