Actually, the Senate has not worked the same for two centuries. It wasn't untill 1911 that the citizens of each state actually voted for their senators. And as far as a sense of civility is concerned, it is the repubs that have shown so sense of civility lately. They are the ones who question another's patriotism. So to be mad at the "newest members" is disingenuous since most of the newest are Democrats.”

As far as California is concerned, it is not the deals made with gov't unions that caused California's problems. The problems started when Reagan was governor. Then something called Propisition 13 stripped most revenues from the state.
