Still, what you said is false. The primary predator of seals that is now gone were humans, including indigenous people. Never were enough polar bears or killer whales to matter. And the polar bear pop is at all time historic highs in any case.
---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- --
First, they aren't at "record highs".
Second, the loss of the ice floes prevents them from getting to the seals.
Third, the largest natural predators of seals are orcas, sharks and polar bears.”

The James / Hudson bay populations are severely underweight (especially just north of Moosonee)and overall numbers are dropping.”

“Yes they are. And they were never more than ultra-rare in NF and Labrador.
Orcas is the other name for killer whales. But yes, I forgot sharks. But the Innuit and other indigenous people were their primary predator before Euro contact, and Euros took over from there. With hunting almost stopped, the seal population has exploded.
Rusty has plenty of information in the book bag on this, but be careful to avoid the Farley Mowatt fairy tales. He doesn't let any facts get in the way of his stories.”

Just because they don't actually kill the white ones anymore shouldn't stop the seal protest industry from using them as their symbol, should it?”

“Climate change is NOT just about temperatur e...it's about our ecosystem. I have witnessed the decimation of the northern cod stocks, partly due to over-fishing and partly due to the effects of climate change.
From the ICES Journal of Marine Science
Future CO2-induced climate change scenarios from Global Circulation Models (GCMs) indicate increasing air temperatures, with the greatest warming in the Arctic and Subarctic. Changes to the wind fields and precipitation patterns are also suggested. These will lead to changes in the hydrographic properties of the ocean, as well as the vertical stratification and circulation patterns. Of particular note is the expected increase in ocean temperature. Based upon the observed responses of cod to temperature variability, the expected responses of cod stocks throughout the North Atlantic to the future temperature scenarios are reviewed and discussed here. Stocks in the Celtic and Irish Seas are expected to disappear under predicted temperature changes by the year 2100, while those in the southern North Sea and Georges Bank will decline.”

“Mostly overfishing. But the lack of recovery points to other things too. Like short term climate change, and of course record high seal populations.”
