It seems that there is this unspoken rule that does not allow reviewers to step outside of the authors cultural/ethnic background to make comparisons of their work. Perhaps there will come a time when this particular boundary will be broken down. It would be nice to see writers compared on the content of their work no matter who they are.”

“I have read and blogged on the topic of violence against girls and women in Africa. Some of the accounts that I have come across are brutal and inhumane. Then I think about the six women who were found in my home state of Ohio. They were raped and murdered. Which makes me realize that no matter where we are in this world-our safety is never totally assured.

I will definitely be reading Half of the Sky because there is the low point in this situation and then there is the recovery process.”

The primary responsible for a well educated person still lies within the home and within their community. That process also goes beyond the confines of a classroom. This is a reality that we have to start helping others to understand. We also need to help support networks that can help to connect parents with available resources. Or teach those who are not truly aware on how to use existing resources such as the library.

“I am not shocked by the level of fear that has been expressed. Perhaps that is due to the fact that we've known when and if there ever was a Black POTUS-this would be a part of the reaction. We knew that there would be a backlash.

I grew up during the fifties. So, the in your face style of fear and loathing that is being expressed is not anything new to me. It is new to my adult children's generation. Even if they knew that there has always been this element withn the society-they have never had to deal with it in this manner. While you've done an excellent job of explaining one side of the fear. But, there is our side of this issue. And it is different than theirs. I cannot recall any conversation on this subject in which the upset to the status quo was not mentioned. This was long before Obama stepped up on the American political scene. We knew that the idea of a Black person in the major leadership role of America would be too much for some people to take. They didn't prove our theory wrong.

I find myself becoming more ill at ease than I've been in a long time. Irrational anger is also very dangerous anger. I find myself questioning if this anger will eventually be turned towards people of color who are just average citizens.”

I am tired of listening to the hemming and hawing-either get to the business at hand-deliver what we need-or those who fail to do so-should plan to be back in their home state unemployed.

We are engaged in a battle to determine which America will be the majority nation. Any politican from the White House to the local dog catcher had better recognize that. And if the Dems plan to be the majority party after the 2010 elections-they need to do the right thing!”

The America that he loves is the one that I hate! It is oppressive and calloused. It does not represent me as a woman of color period. That is the America that I will openly fight against until the day I die. I suspect that he had better get ready for a real community organizer's battle. Because it is getting real in the field. And there are a whole lot of non-socialist people who are tired of his racist, sexist, ignorant rantings.”
