Why I Don't Want to Be the Next Amy Tan

Commented Nov 02, 2009 at 22:31:21 in Books

“I can totally relate to the points you raised in this post. It seems that there is this unspoken rule that does not allow reviewers to step outside of the authors cultural/ethnic background to make comparisons of their work. Perhaps there will come a time when this particular boundary will be broken down. It would be nice to see writers compared on the content of their work no matter who they are.”

Communication Interruptus

Commented Oct 04, 2009 at 11:35:53 in Living

“Thanks for sharing this story. One of my granddaughter's is autistic. She has made great strides over the past few years. I always appreciate reading stories from others that educate and inspire!

Hopefully people who do not have autistic family members will begin to realize that our children are capable of doing so much more than they might expect. We also need to let people know that progress does happen in their lives.”

Nine Myths About Public Schools

Commented Sep 27, 2009 at 19:01:49 in Politics

“This is one of the most informative and intelligent articles that I've read on education in a long time.

The primary responsible for a well educated person still lies within the home and within their community. That process also goes beyond the confines of a classroom. This is a reality that we have to start helping others to understand. We also need to help support networks that can help to connect parents with available resources. Or teach those who are not truly aware on how to use existing resources such as the library.

We're the ones who are going to have to bridge the gap within our respective communities. That is the true essence of the proverb:It takes a village to raise a child.”

“I am not shocked by the level of fear that has been expressed. Perhaps that is due to the fact that we've known when and if there ever was a Black POTUS-this would be a part of the reaction. We knew that there would be a backlash.

I grew up during the fifties. So, the in your face style of fear and loathing that is being expressed is not anything new to me. It is new to my adult children's generation. Even if they knew that there has always been this element withn the society-they have never had to deal with it in this manner. While you've done an excellent job of explaining one side of the fear. But, there is our side of this issue. And it is different than theirs. I cannot recall any conversation on this subject in which the upset to the status quo was not mentioned. This was long before Obama stepped up on the American political scene. We knew that the idea of a Black person in the major leadership role of America would be too much for some people to take. They didn't prove our theory wrong.

I find myself becoming more ill at ease than I've been in a long time. Irrational anger is also very dangerous anger. I find myself questioning if this anger will eventually be turned towards people of color who are just average citizens.”

I don't care what her political ties are. A drunk driver is dangerous. I hope she has to get some help to make responsible choices.”

World Population Day Highlights Educating Girls

Commented Jul 11, 2009 at 22:46:25 in World

“First of all, the link does not work.

I find your response to be a rather narrow view of reality. The United Nations is not the only voice speaking out on behalf of educating girls. This is a movement that has its roots in the developing nations. Excuse me if I am skeptical of this organizations intentions. Why? Because the developing nations are populations that are people of color. We could write volumes on how the lack of education and mis-education has already affected generations and our lives. As you well know many of our countries have had less than a favorable relationship with the UK.

You are benifiting from your education. Yet, you do not see the need for others to have access to those same opportunities? If life is that precious and important-isn't quality a matter of importance also?

Ignorance is not bliss. It is a tool that keeps people impoverished.”

“Chimp,

I totally disagree with your remarks about Michelle being anti-American.

Let's keep it real in the '08. There are times when I am ashamed of the ideas that America forwards at home and within the international community. There is no reason in my mind to be proud of liars, cheats or those who will kill in thousands of ways.

What America do you reside in? Your statement about Michelle being allowed is an indication to me that you feel she needed permission. The America that I reside in dictates that working towards your goals will put you where you want to arrive. Even when you are not well received when you land. You also have to have intelligence, support and determination to go through positive and negative experiences.

Is it anti-American to tell the truth? Not everyone has the same story in these United States.
And whether you like it or not~America has its own home grown problems within the democracy.
Ignoring them and not openly addressing the negatives just empowers them to thrieve!

Anti-American is the attitude that I see in your statement. Don't say anything that isn't in line with mainstream America's thoughts. Let's all act like this nation is flawless and treats all of her native born children in the same way. That is theory. When you live to practice that theory ~the picture of appreication is not always the same.”

ResidentChimp replied on Jun 15, 2008 at 08:11:14

“If you want to know the truth, you and Michelle like to set standards for America that you don't bother to apply to anyone else. There's may be no reason to be proud of yourself, but that's no reason to project it onto the rest of America. Our country is the most tolerant, most open to newcomers, and most encouraging of achievement. Michelle has lived a life of entitlement and her outlook is one of grievances. You can live in shame all you want, but I perfer to see America as she is and in comparison to any other country in the World, she is the best. And I don't care to have leaders, like Obama or his mentors, Carter, Wright, et al who want to denigrate our Country.”

There comes a time when enough is enough!

Apparently the sane part of the national public needs to write sponsors and station managers to express our opinions.

It is really disgusting to know that Fox is still even on the airwaves!”

RoSull replied on May 26, 2008 at 19:32:15

“Unfortunately, there appears to be a branch of the american public that like this type of "news". Fox is anything but "Fair and Balanced". It is their right to spout any kind of hate they want to on the air, but what I want to know is how do the anchors and personalities go to bed at night after hearing and saying the vile things that come out of their mouths some of the time?

I also want to know who is really tuning into Fox News to get their primary source of news. I mean I have had to endure Fox news when it is the channel that is on at Hotel restaurants, or on at the airport, but who gets up in the morning and says, " I need to watch the news...what channel does Fox news come on?"”
