Half The Sky: Fighting Gender Violence

Commented Nov 02, 2009 at 22:14:12 in Books

“I have read and blogged on the topic of violence against girls and women in Africa. Some of the accounts that I have come across are brutal and inhumane. Then I think about the six women who were found in my home state of Ohio. They were raped and murdered. Which makes me realize that no matter where we are in this world-our safety is never totally assured.

I will definitely be reading Half of the Sky because there is the low point in this situation and then there is the recovery process.”

“This is really an example of failure to grow mentally. I am from a bi-racial family. We are all grown and we've done quite nicely. This individual needs to get a clue-love really does cross the issue of race. We grew up when being bi-racial was not accepted by society. But, we also knew that sooner or later people in this nation would realize that it was a matter of fact-even if they did not agree with our parents decision.

This whole idea about race is begining to expose the sincerely stupid side of America.”

kas70 replied on Oct 16, 2009 at 03:08:04

“I'm becoming confused by some biracial young people saying that they weren't accepted until recently. I'm biracial too, and almost 40 years old - I was accepted as being black. Perhaps there were instances of whites saying that I was wasn't "really" black; or blacks telling me I had "good hair", but the societal result was pretty consistent - I was treated as a non-white person of color, and with my features that translated to "black".

Today people can define themselves more precisely, sure - but I would argue that the societal result hasn't changed all that much. What I believe has changed, and I am glad to see, are biracial children being welcomed into their white (or Asian, Hispanic, etc.) sides of the family more readily in recent years.”

They still dream that Mainstream Americans want their opinion, after overwhelmingly throwing them out.

“What a bunch of malarkey!

I am an Ohioan. The problem seems to be that Bohner has worked really hard to ignore the people who don't agree with his opinions. His statement only confirms what I've believed all along-he needs to come back to the O-State as fired!”

ReealOne replied on Oct 03, 2009 at 03:37:19

“Great msladydeborah that you're fired up! Now please encourage your fellow Ohioans to work hard to get Boehner out of politics as quickly as possible. Otherwise, your "energy" is wasted.

Boehner has shown his true colors (just as the other "so-called gop/republican/conservative leaders") so it's time for the folks in your state to say ENOUGH!!

Boehner doesn't know anyone who wants a public option, because as they ARE demanding a public option... he just put his fingers in his ears so that he doesn't hear them, put his hands over his eyes so that he doesn't hear them, and he makes himself 'unavailable' for phone calls, letters, emails, voice mails, and any other type of communications. Let's start removing people like John Boehner from our government, who are convinced that they were not sent to Washington to represent our wishes.”

Signs Of Trouble For Democrats In 2010

Signs Of Trouble For Democrats In 2010

Commented Sep 06, 2009 at 09:29:14 in Politics

“What sense does it make to have a majority in Congress and fail to get the job done? I find myself becoming increasingly annoyed by both parties. Especially the Democratic Party. After all the work that was done to give them the majority-they are acting like they are the minority party instead of the majority.

If the nation has spoken and we have the right to rule-somebody needs to be about the business of doing their job. I supported Obama to bring about the changes we needed. I realize that he has to be diplomatic and try to work with the GOP-but there comes a time when enough is enough!

Are the Dems in trouble? I don't know because the media doesn't vote. We do. And if having a majority doesn't yield what we need-then there is a problem within this republic. I am tired of listening to the hemming and hawing-either get to the business at hand-deliver what we need-or those who fail to do so-should plan to be back in their home state unemployed.

We are engaged in a battle to determine which America will be the majority nation. Any politican from the White House to the local dog catcher had better recognize that. And if the Dems plan to be the majority party after the 2010 elections-they need to do the right thing!”

“Why does the song "If I Only Had A Brain" come to my mind every time I read something about Shelly B?

If she really had a brain that generated intelligence-she would be dangerous!

I think that she needs to have a serious mental health check up. Because this is a statement from a delusional mind. She is no less than a functional nit-wit. Her ignorance is only surpassed by those who think that she is really an intelligent woman.

Every time I think about her receiving a paycheck as a member of Congress, I get angry! It is a waste of money.”

Glenn Beck Gets First Scalp: Van Jones Resigns

Commented Sep 06, 2009 at 09:03:07 in Politics

“Van Jones has viable plans and expertise on how to bring green economics into urban settings. He is the type of individual that our nation needs in government. It is too bad that former radicals cannot have the benefit of being seen as changed. When we try to work within the system we still get chastised for doing what a true patriot does when things are not correct within the government.

Beck is going to find that there is going to be a faction of people in this nation who are more than willing to do battle with him. Because we are really fighting for this country. Either we are going to help make a nation where all people are respected and cared for-or there is going to be total chaos and confusion.

The America that he loves is the one that I hate! It is oppressive and calloused. It does not represent me as a woman of color period. That is the America that I will openly fight against until the day I die. I suspect that he had better get ready for a real community organizer's battle. Because it is getting real in the field. And there are a whole lot of non-socialist people who are tired of his racist, sexist, ignorant rantings.”

I am often frustrated and angry over the type of meals that children are served. Removing junk food from the menu would be a great beginning. Providing them with fresh food and meals that provide nutritional value would be an amazing improvement.”
