Virginia Mandatory Ultrasound Law's Repeal Blocked By State GOP

Commented Jan 17, 2013 at 21:06:36 in Politics

“It's time for Virginia doctors to invoke the conscience clause: Forcing a woman to have an unwanted and unnecessary procedure violates every ethical tenet of medicine. If pharmacists can refuse to dispense birth control pills on the grounds that their religion is anti-sex for pleasure, then surely doctors and ultrasound techs have the right to refuse this abomination on the grounds that their religion is against "assault." Yes, assault - that is what forcing someone to have an unwanted, unneeded medical procedure is. Assault.”

'I Am Adam Lanza's Mother': A Mom's Perspective On The Mental Illness Conversation In America

Commented Dec 16, 2012 at 13:42:49 in Parents

“Most mental health problems are chronic or even life-long problems and thus are expensive to treat. Our for profit insurance system will never adequately cover mental health. There just isn't any gains to be made. As a society we pay dearly for the masses of untreated depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, PTSD, impulse control disorders, etc. . . It may be expensive to treat, but it's even more expensive not to treat.”

Remember, our culture worships at the alter of individualism and "pull yourself up by the bootstraps." We barely have a health care system, and we DON'T have any mental health care (I'm an MD, and am horrified by how bad our services are). If you had read the article you would have read that only if he is charged with a crime can he get into the mental health care system, which is by and large run through the prisons.”

Obama On Debate: 'I Was Just Too Polite'

Commented Oct 10, 2012 at 13:58:19 in Politics

“Real Americans watching the debate saw a smug, smirking Mitt Romney who reversed his position on every single issue compared to how he's been campaigning in the past. It is just not credible to believe that a whole country who has been finding Romney as fairly unlikeable for 5 years (since he started running for the '08 nomination) would suddenly say, "Hey, I like this guy and I like his policies." The way this debate is being reported seems like a strategy to promote interest in an election that seemed to have a foregone conclusion a week ago and is now "exciting" again. People remember what a disaster the Bush years were and they realize that things have gotten much better. Under Obama we stopped diggin the hole that Bush started digging in 2001, and now the hole is being filled in as evidenced by almost all economic indicators as well as the sense of economic optimism in most of the country.”

calidesigner on Oct 10, 2012 at 14:18:56

“Well stated. Agreed, those of us with brains saw the smarmy smile accompanied by rapid blinking each time Romney's position shifted yet again. We saw the president stand back and let the bully show his true colors.

Only media need to generate more viewers in a "close" election explains how so many pundits praised Romney rather than condemning him for his smarmy bullying.”

Hospital Chain Inquiry Cited Unnecessary Cardiac Work

Commented Aug 7, 2012 at 11:56:22 in Healthy Living

“This article is a perfect illustration of the inherent conflict of interest in for-profit medicine. Innovation comes slowly in medicine and is expensive and subject to regulatory control to make sure that new devices and medications and procedures are safe. So making a profit can't rely on innovating and competing with another hospital or doctors groups. Fee-for-service systems make money by performing unnecessary procedures and providing too much care. Capitated systems make money by withholding necessary care, and both types of systems try insurance companies to make money by constantly increasing the cost of their products.”

“So George Zimmerman was able to get a gun legally. By all accounts he sounds like someone who could be diagnosed with a mental illness - impulse control disorder? an Axis II personality disorder? Even the gun zealots always like to say that people with mental illness shouldn't be able to get guns. But many people with mental illnesses aren't officially diagnosed. Unless they commit a crime, we depend on people voluntarily seeking psychiatric help. So we may only learn about their mental illness after the crime. And lot's of people have untreated depression, paranoia and anger control problems. How do you screen them out so they can't get guns?”

Bados on Mar 20, 2012 at 17:33:13

“so you don't believe in health insurance? Is sexual health somehow different than say, cardiac health or bowel health? If you agree that insurance should cover other medical/health conditions, why shouldn't it cover health conditions associated with sex? Is sex a moral issue for you, rather than a normal human function? Are you one of those self-righteous people who think "sex is bad, and only bad people are having sex?"”

Vrano on Mar 19, 2012 at 08:13:45

“No, sex is very wonderful and fun. However, knowing the risks/consequenses of having sex ensured that I was responsible for my actions, not only for myself, but for my partner. I bought my own condoms, and never asked anyone to buy them for me. I kept it in my pants and didn't run around trying to stick it in every woman I came across. I have three children from two marriages (have custody of my son from my first, and two in my second...still married btw). I chose, on my own, to have a vasectomy during my wife's pregnancy with our youngest son. I did this because I enjoy having sex with my wife, and I don't want other children. She enjoys it because I took responsibility for my own actions in this regard.

So, tell me, does having a sexually active life just mean you relinquish all your responsibility to ensure that you do the right thing? And while you want my hands off your body and out of your room, why should your hand be dipping into my wallet to pay for your activities?”
