“if it came to a court martial (and i seriously doubt it will) they would have to prove he intended to remain away permanently (which is presumed if he remained away voluntarily 30 days, but he didnt). asking his team leader for advice on what to take with him makes it look like unauthorized absence with intent to return to me.”

“The fact that he put down his weapon while on guard duty, in a war zone and "deserted" his post is suffiecient. Normal desertion that you speak of would be if he left his army unit with the intention of permanently staying away is a different matter.”

“two interesting observations i have noticed whenever racial subjects come up : 1) no current white person is related to anyone that was in the country pre-1865, unless that ancestor was a northern civil war soldier ; 2) all white people have a grandfather that marched with martin luther king.”

jbp3 on May 31, 2014 at 11:20:12

“People who have these attributes self-select to make a comment (like me). Those that do not, more often keep silent. Blacks do not have a "free pass" to be racist about whites, any more than whites have a free pass to be racist about blacks. I do not consider myself excessively racist, but I do have a twinge of it from time to time. In the 1960's-1970's in my student days, I lived on the ground floor of a dormitory in Cambridge Massachusetts. It was easy for "townies" (or arrivals from Roxbury by subway) to walk the halls, and even enter the often unlocked rooms. I lost a wallet (later found empty in Roxbury), a topaz crystal (from a bookshelf display of minerals), and a package delivered by the Postal Service. The first two were the same incident, witnessed by my roommate since I was taking a shower at the time in the communal bathroom; the perp was black. One night at 1 AM, coming back from a bridge tournament, I encountered 3 blacks trying to make off with the communal color television. (They left it outside and hightailed it.) I worked in Richmond VA for 25 years for a company that used to be part of the Dow-Jones average. We had many blacks on staff; anyone good enough to actually be hired there was a fine citizen, and I dealt with them daily. I have had a contract with black-owned refuse collectors for 30 years.”

“Not quite that simple. I had some family come on the Mayflower, predating the African slave trade. There were also instances of White Irish and Scots sold into slavery, again predating the rise of the African slave trade.

And while my other descendants came later on, they were systematically discriminated against at the time before they were assimilated into American society.Doing genealogical studies I have not come across an instance of my direct descendants owning a slave.”

“So you're going to punish a mom and pop store that makes a very little profit margin by forcing them to pay a $20 an hour to employ someone verse $15 currently in Chicago because you want to get back at "EVIL BIG" business? Yes, if you pay someone $15 per hour it comes out to about $20 to employ them. There's employment tax (based on how much the employees wage is), workmans comp, unemployment tax, health insurance (or the $2,000 per person fine the IRS). All of that is about 1/3 of an employee's wage is all of those things the Government REQUIRES a business to have just to employ one person. Some cities charge a tax per employee to employers on top of everything else, Los Angeles is on example.”
