“I'd like to make a contribution, but I don't do PayPal. PayPal is owned by a rightwing Republican (Meg Whitman) and has in the past frozen funds for liberal political organizations and campaigns, in order to interfere with their success. As a PP user, you should understand that PP has absolute right, under their Terms of Service to which you agreed, to freeze your account and deny you access to your money for any reason whatever. There is no appeal.
I find it disappointing that Huffington Post endorses contributing money to an organization that is itself contributing money to political efforts directly opposed to everything we are supposed to stand for (such as Prop 8 in CA).
Thanks.

“Leaves little doubt that the American media, Huffpo included, are part of the propoganda and in on deceiving the public. Some fools here are quick to wrap themselves in the American flag, declare themselves patriots, and call those who state the facts as they are, unAmerican if it doesn't agree with their pre-judiced views that ANYTHING the government does is fine, legal, honest, and in the best interest of the people, when in fact plenty of evidence has been accumulated over the years that this country, as almost all countries, have leaders and institutions that are corrupt. To those who wonder how I or we felt after sept 11: The response was improper, incorrect, illegal, and a waste of U.S. taxpayer monies, lives, and resources. Al-qaida has no state, no army, no airforce, no navy, no radars, no airbases, no submarines, and no government. Bill Maher's 'Religulous': Oscar Bait?

“"In order to catch on widely like religion itself, what atheism has needed for a long time is a popular preacher to rally 'round."
Maybe what atheism needs is a raison d'etre.
I've never ridiculed, been contemptuous of nor dismissive toward an atheist qua atheist. And I've not met the atheist who wasn't all of the above toward me ... as soon as it is revealed that I'm a Christian. When it comes to the moral high ground, most atheists are in the gutter.
NB Madalyn Murray O'Hair was a deeply unhappy, selfish and vindictive woman. If her career as a mother and human being were a defining benchmark of atheism, you couldn't recruit a corpse to your cause. Certainly, she was notably unsuccessful in rallying American citizens to her campaign.

Blue Laws Repealed, Sunday Beer Sales Legal In Colorado
Commented Jul 01, 2008 at 16:03:13 in Business
“This kind of makes me laugh. I also live in a state in which alcohol sales are prohibited on Sundays (CT) and to make it more laughable -- there's no motorcycle helmet law here, either. So, you can't buy beer on Sunday, but you can drive your Harley to the grocery store without wearing a helmet.
Nonetheless, this is a "ginned up" controversy (pardon the pun). If you can't have fun without knocking back a couple, then you should regard that as a personal issue and deal with it. The people really focussed on "drinking for fun" are already acclimated and just buy on Saturday, so this change will only result in a sales pattern shift from "prebuying" on Saturday to impulse buying on Sunday.
A woman from Lyon, France once remarked to me that the difference between drinking in France and the US was that in France, you go out to be with friends and have a couple of drinks; in the US, you go out to drink and take along friends, if they're available.
Thanks.

If Not Hillary, Who Will Be The First Female President?

“After seeing the way Clinton was treated by the media, the party and the faux feminists, it would be difficult to fathom any woman in the foreseeable future wanting to aim for that target.
The vicious reactions to Clinton's brave attempt to be the first probably assure us that it will another 30 years before another attempt is made. Which was, of course, the whole point. We haven't even had a woman in the running for vice president, let alone president, since 1984 -- 24 years. Somewhere around 2032, we should have another. Will you still be able to vote? Will you be able to find someone to van you to the voting booth from your nursing home? Or, maybe you'll be living under a bridge and unable to vote because you don't meet the state's voter registration laws.
Pathetically, women have more political status in countries like Pakistan or Sri Lanka (Sri Lanka!) than they do in the United States.
Thanks.

“There are a few things that are always true of Elections:
1) The activists and those who are most liberal (Democrats) and the most
Conservative (Republicans) vote in the Primaries.
2) Often, either camp picks the most liberal and most conservative nominee and
3) The inclusion, of non-party voters (read independents) always skews the results
4) In each general election, one candidate is deemed, by the electorate, as being too liberal or too conservative and that one candidate loses.
Some observations:
This group, the Obama supporters (hopefully just a subset here) are extremely sure of their expertise (although most are too young to have done much of anything) in business and in politics.
They, (not the electorate) feel that one candidate (Hillary) can do nothing right and just has no right to even call herself a progressive at all, even though they were not very much aware or even alive when she was in the White House or even earlier in her career.
Furthermore, they believe that their candidate (Obama) can do no wrong even though he has been rather short-sighted in both his judgement on the campaign trail and in his personal dealings not to mention his lack of building a real movement (apart from running for President) in response to his leadership (in this case, lack of) on any number of different issues.”

“The reactions to Clinton's campaign did not come from the fact that she is a woman - it was a reaction to her tactics.
I am a woman and was one of the most loyal supporters of HRC out there, I have defended her endlessly and when she announced I was thrilled. She was the presumptive nominee from the beginning - the media expressed that, the supers who pledged before one single vote was counted expressed that and I along with all of her early and loyal supporters expected her to be the Democratic candidate.
Hillary showed sides of herself that turned me off- sorry to tell you this but the truth is it was hers to lose- she turned me and so many other people off. It also didn't help Hillary that there was another candidate who stood out and really took the spot light off of her. The more she went negative the more he stood out as positive. The current presumptive nominee is the one who won more of everything required to be the Dem candidate. It is just the facts.
Those of you who say that HRC didn't win because she is a woman is missing the point completely. This is because of the person - HRC- nothing else.”

Meanwhile there have been NO female heads of state in the Netherlands or Sweden, where women enjoy the most legal and cultural emancipation in the world - they have higher representation in parliament, have much longer maternity leave, have unrestricted access to family planning, are better represented in the maths and sciences, and lesbians' rights are better protected by the gay rights laws. So what does that say about the effect of a female head of government upon the lives of the women in her country?”

Expert Support For Gas Tax Holiday Appears Nonexistent
Commented Apr 30, 2008 at 21:34:21 in Politics
“The only reject slip that made sense was the one that commented that gas prices most likely would not drop. However, the "extra" money likely would not go to the "oil company" but to the gas station owner. Gas stations typically operate at such low margins that they would regard an additional 18 cents a gallon as godsend.
This does ignore, however, the likelihood that gas wars would immediately break out and drive the price down, gas station operator willing or not.
If you use 20 gallons of gas a week, around here you're spending about $304 a month at 3.80 a gallon. At 3.65 a gallon, you're spending $292, a savings of $12 a month. That might not be big money to you -- most of the people on this blog are well into the middle class, with 6-figure incomes. But for anybody tied to a tight budget, no matter what your income, that is a big deal.
I think the gas-tax idea has more psychological than economic sense. When money is tight, the offer to do something immediate and tangible to help is valuable. It may be "pandering" (which is just a pejorative directed by people who don't have any ideas on how to provide immediate help, or aren't interested in doing so) ... but it is effective "pandering ."
Thanks.

“the tax is collected from the producers- any savings would never make it to the gas station owners
You also contradict yourself- if "gas prices most likely would not drop" (and they won't, since you also failed to take in to account the market forces at play) then there won't be any savings, no psychological effect and no immediate help. Therefore, the pandering won't be effective- in fact, it'll be counterproductive. Unless by effective you mean garnering votes from the ill informed, in that case it probably will be effective. ..”

Media Jump Ship From Obama To Clinton

“There's nothing "radical" or "new" about the Obama political position. He's a middle-of-the-road DLC Democrat on every public policy position he has taken, and to the right of Clinton in most cases. I challenge you or any other Obama-bot to describe one of his positions that does not fall into this category.
Yes, he has brought a lot of weak-sister wannabees into the Democratic column for a one-off vote for himself. These are largely people who do nothing for their country now, and of whom there is no evidence whatever that they will ever do anything for their country -- beyond voting for Barack Obama in one election. If you can consider that "doing something for your country."
The popular expression used to be "Where's the beef?" Where, indeed. The reason we have primary season is so that the candidates can make their cases. If Obama can't step up to the bar now and make his case, he certainly is not going to be able to step up in the Fall election season.
Clinton will win in the Fall. Will Obama? Prove it.
Thanks.

Randi Rhodes May Be No Better Than Ann Coulter, But Ann Coulter Works For No One (And Is Honest About It)
Commented Apr 15, 2008 at 08:32:15 in Media
“At some point, Rhodes started believing her own press releases. This is usually fatal. She can do a decent radio show, but she is far from brilliant. She might have made a solid niche for herself by concentrating on an area of the political spectrum in which she had some expertise -- say, the military. Thom Hartmann is a good example of this type of host. The last time I listened to her (some time ago, now), her specialty seemed to be tinfoil beanie conspiracy theories. My reaction to that kind of stuff is, "Get over it." It quickly becomes boring.
I don't see how anyone can claim that calling a Presidential candidate a whore does not constitute an ad hominem attack. That is as bizarre a redefinition of ad hominem as the original attack was inexcusable. Her refusal to apologize was a calculated move -- she no doubt had other offers already lined up and figured on manipulating the controversy for free advertising -- claiming the "high ground" of principle without actually putting her career or income in any danger. Nicely done.
Thanks.

“Eh. I haven't listened to her in quite a while. I quit listening after she started going around the bend with tinfoil beanie conspiracy theories. She could be funny, but she was excessively contemptuous of anyone who didn't fall into line with her conspiracy -of-the-we ek. And she didn't know how to change the subject, when a topic got stale.
Calling Clinton names is just meaningless bloviating. How is she any different from Lard Rushball? I don't have time for that ear-junk. It's not funny and it's not any reason to listen to a talk show. The best talk shows are about ideas ... Randi hasn't had a new one since she stopped by the grassy knoll on her way to Area 51.
Thanks.

IRS Hunts Down "Tax Defiers"
Commented Apr 09, 2008 at 14:49:42 in Business
“Paying taxes is part of living in a society. You may not like it, but that is the way it is. Now, some people will tell you that if you don't like it, you can always leave. Yes, you can. You can go up into the wilderness in Idaho and eat roots and berries and poke salmon out of the rivers with a pointed stick.
Tax complainers fall into two categories. First, those who don't give a damn about anyone else and will take whatever society doesn't bolt down. Freeloaders of the worst sort ... they complain about not being allowed to have all the benefits of organized society without having to pay for them.
Second, bad money managers. They dork up their personal finances, don't have enough money to pay their bills, and complain about taxes because they see that tax money as the ticket to paying the bills they should not have run up in the first place. In fact, they got into that position not because they didn't have enough money, but because they failed to live within their means. If they paid NO taxes, they'd just up the spending level until all that was gone.
A pox on both. Live within your means, and pay what you owe. Life is better that way, for all of us. "Happiness is not a destination, but a daily way of travel."
Thanks.

“When taxes are squandered, (stolen, really, think MIC) and when the "organized society" you mention isn't working so well, it almost seems that the country would be better off if the government didn't have the money to waste..
Our leaders take this flow of money for granted. They should be a little more careful controlling how it is spent.”

My thoughts, regardless of your supposed Huff's pick you are truly one sided. I guess we are to grit our teeth, accept what is and go about our daily lives without question. Screw you and the other upper crust who rule over us with an elitist attitude. Ever hear, what's good for the goose is good for the gander? Rid ourselves of an elitist ruling class and I will change my own opinion. Now I am against bailouts for both the financial institutions and the ignorant borrower but why do the financial institutions always have the best of both worlds in our society? Remember the bank bail outs of the 90s, that should prove my point. Again, screw you.”

“Remember, Obama-bots, this is the guy you have sworn to support if Clinton "steals" (read: "wins") the nomination.
Just Saturday night, as we were driving to a restaurant for supper, an Obama-bot was on a Sirius left talk show, explaining how she would rather see McCain as President than Clinton. I've seen enough of their lack of commitment to what is best for America to believe that, in fact, a majority of Obama supporters will sit out the election, too.
Thanks.

“Wow. Obama refuses all interviews with gay newspapers, and you've turned that into a positive because it "proves" that he is "really pro-gay." I see a promising career for you in marketing. Any job that requires honest assessment and truthful reporting ... not so promising.
How about: he's a two-faced professional politician who has calculated that he doesn't need the votes of the gay community, but he does need the votes of the gay-haters. The former group is much smaller than the later.
Simple political math. Works for me.
Thanks.

“I know why the uneducated pseudo-progressives are so pro-Obama. He looks good in an expensive suit, a suit costing many times more than they'll ever be able to afford.
I'm pro-Clinton because I looked at her positions on issues, especially healthcare, and compared her positions to those of Obama. I found that in almost every case, she is more to the progressive side, had done more thinking and had actual PLANS for solving problems. In almost every case, Obama is the the right of Clinton, and in some cases comes down firmly to the right of the whole party (he supports use of private military contractors like Blackwater, for example).
I know, I know. You don't want to talk no stinking issues -- they're boring. Have another sip of kook-aid.
Thanks.
