Why We Need Even More Stimulus
Commented Nov 09, 2009 at 13:27:33 in Business
“As usual, Bob Reich has a solid common sense approach to money problems.
Our dear president needs to have him over for a beer and a chat instead of wasting his time with those pointy-headed guys on his economic team. His economic team is the weakest point in his administration. I wish he would just tell them, "Thanks" and move on to a new, more diverse team that isn't composed of the guys who set up the problem.”

“If Rahmbo thinks are not easy enough now, wait until the midterms after a "no public option" or a "public option with the never-to-be-triggered switch" are passed.
The no controversy, no spine, no nothings will face a Republican or Conservadem congress. Let's see how they like that.
This not much change. No bank regulation, no consumer protection, a huge health care giveaway, and more war. These we don't need.
Where or where is real change, real morality? If we have to go down, at least we should go down really doing the best we can, not just what we timidly think is "doable."”

“I am willing to hit the ground and open my pocketbook to those who support the public options---and so are many others across the country. The women of the Senate, already vulnerable, should be especially aware of this.
They can only win with broad support, often some 0f it from elsewhere. I am afraid that Senator Lincoln is going to be left holding the bag is she continues to oppose the public option. This writer is right. The character of her opposition is already determined, so she should go ahead and do what's right.
As for myself, I am no longer willing to support a candidate, even a woman, who cannot do what's right on the big issues. I'm sorry about that, but that's the way it is. No vote, no support.”

As for her using her title, it actually is technically incorrect. For instance, there is only one President at a time, so that all other former Presidents should not use that term. However, for those who served honorably and COMPLETED their terms of service, others often extend the courtesy of using an honorific such as "Senator" or "General" as a way of honoring that service. The person receiving this courtesy, however, never uses it on him or herself.
As she quit the job she asked for---with no reason at all--- I feel she should not receive this courtesy and certainly should not be so gauche as to refer to herself as Governor.”

“Rep. Weiner is one of the few clear speakers on this topic. His brief to the point remarks, e.g., "47% of all medical bills are already undera single payer system..." make it much easier for average folks to grasp the potential plusses and minuses of such a system.
We are not going to get it now. That's clear. And it is a terrible shame. We aren't even going to get the Swiss sytem which has both public and private pay routes to privately held medical practices and hospitals.
We can only work toward the next round.”

So yes, voting soley on emotional reactions, the fact that a large part of the country feels left out, abandoned, mocked and undervalued, is more than possible. It may be inevitable.”

I once knew a woman who deliberately rejected all form of reasoning and logic. She would not listen to any "head and mind" arguments from anybody. She made decisions based on "instinct" guided by her deep spiritual convictions.
A looney, no hoper, crazy chic heading for the gargage dump of society perhaps? Not a bit of it. My friend never did a day's "conventional" work in her life but she was an incredibly successful businesswoman. People bought into her ideas because they made sense and because of her obvious sincere conviction and incredibly warm personality.
In Sarah Palin, I recognize a kindred spirit to my friend, albeit a "spirituality" that, unlike my friend, guides her to positions I despise and cannot support. However there will be many that do see eye to eye with Sarah. As I said above, ignore her at your peril!”

“The real issue beneath the surface of this debate is how will our society continue to have professional writing specialists--- editors, journalists, novelists, and all the other so necessary information folks that provide a continuity and standards which the rest of us depend upon.
Democracy must have open access to the most information possible. That does not simply mean drivel, but well-shaped and well-expressed thoughts, facts and arguments. Without that, democracy quickly decays into the feelings of a crowd on any given day.
The question is: how to pay the creator? With academics, one can argue they are already being paid to train apprentices, the next generation, and comment on the state of their art or science within that system. Most fund their journals through membership fees, so putting things out on the net is not going to break them. Many of us consider it a part of our work, and our cultural duty.
The argument at that level is clear....the educational system should see these folks get better pay, and thus, the public who pays for these institutions, gets the information.
As for out of touch old copyright holders, declare their rights void after a much shorter period. Copyright was never meant to fund dynastys or Disney mice forever.
That leaves our journalists. They are among the most important information shapers and finders in our society. We need to find a way to keep the information freely flowing and see that they can make a living.”
