“Nobody is a Bushphile now. That adds no credibility whatsoever.
Bush did not get the Taliban. He induced them to move. The people in Pakistan dealing with an increased Taliban and religious fanatical presence are not appreciative of this fact. I reject the notion that we should have been going after the Taliban or Saddam in the first place.
I repeat, this is not a left/right issue. Blame democrats if you want, I do.”

“If you think what I was describing was a benevolent approach, rather than a reason approach then all I can do is shake my head. This is how far down the rabbit hole we have come, that so many of us don't know how to objectively assess a set of actions for its success or failure. The reason, under a framework of rational assessment, Bush got so beat up by the public is because practically all, if not all, of his decisions were pure garbage.”

No exit strategy...that was stupid. Same here. We are leaving but first we are going to have over 100k and then we will begin bringing them out. Talk about the rabbit hole. The Queen of Hearts is a democrat.”

“I am really tired of people responding to complaints about specific Obama policy decisions by saying that those that are complaining thought that Obama was going to fix everything with the wave of his hand. The people who actually did think that are crazy and few and far between. This is a classic straw man move designed to reject any disapproval of our President. I am sorry but we on the left need to be better than that. Obama is not our unquestionable supreme leader and he is also not trying to tear this country down from the inside. What he is is a man, trying his best to balance political ramifications with the best interests of this country and as such, he deserves a little criticism (as well as praise) once in a while, when earned.”

There is no need for you to bring up NYC or how you people really feel. That is besides the point! Did we asks the Iraqi's how they felt in operation Iraqi freedom? No! BEcause in the end, it's not about them...just like war isn't about New York.
Go read a book.”

“Sounds like an eternal holy war argued for with fearmongering hyperbole.
As someone who was born and raised in NYC, I have to say to the rest of you that we do not all feel this way and many of us were shocked at how war hungry the rest of the country was on "our behalf" after Sep 2001. The beauty of NYC is that, with so many people from all over the world living in one spot, it is really hard to grow up there understanding this exaggerated us vs. them rhetoric. I care about the well-being of NYers but I would sooner tell them to buckle up than to get out their war drums. It is NY, as a symbol of global unity, that does more to protect our safety than any training of fleeting foreign forces ever will.”

“Wait...so you thought we went to war on behalf of NYC? REALLLY...? The towers were a symbol. They could have blown up ten different buildings in America...and the one that held the most people would be the "reason" for going to war. To think the country was going to war because we thought the people of New York wanted us to or deserved it is pretty silly.

“When Obama pulled a Guilliani in the first few minutes of his speech, it told me more about his own belief in his reasons for escalating Afghanistan to a full-blown war. than anything else he's said so far.
Obama wouldn't have had to use the 911 fear tactic Bush/Cheney cudgeled us over the head with for 8 years to try to convince us what they were doing was justified if Obama's reasons for his Afghanistan war were justified and credible.”

“Ok, let's see what the "and then" part of the speech sounds like.
As far as the rest of your comment, I agree that they should be managing their own destiny. I am not sure what about my comment contradicts that. I would just rather not lose more of our soldiers' lives and spend $300 billion over the next three years to let them be where they would be had we not bothered in the first place. And yes, leaving will always be a messy proposition. I am all about empowering people to control their own future. Giving them more police to do the controlling the way we see fit does not fit in that mold.”

“We know what the plan is. Train Afghan security forces to "control" their destabilized, massively corrupt, grotesque conglomeration of tribes that some insist on calling a country. We train them and then what? We head out of their only to leave the people we trained with no ongoing resources, just to go back to the way things were? Unless you think Obama should suggest that we pay for their salaries in perpetuity? There is no plan. This occupation was never meant to be won and never will be, no matter how much capitulation to the fans of war (the right) Obama does.”
WB3 replied on Dec 01, 2009 at 14:03:03
“Thank you for proving my point. "training the Afghan military" is a means not an end. As for the "then what" part of your response, I believe you're supposed to actually listen to the address tonight for that answer along with the purposed "ends" we'll now be trying to reach. Long story short, if you are looking for some neat and clean way out of an eight year war, you're deluding yourself. Will Afghanistan be some bastion of governmental and moral excellence ? No. But whatever it becomes, it should be Afghanies (Pashtuns, Tajiks, ..etc) to determine that. Not us. Even if that means groups we don't like (this decade) have a part in it.”
