Christmas Eve Is the 3,000th Day in Afghanistan and 30th Anniversary of the Russian Invasion

Commented Dec 23, 2009 at 22:49:21 in World

“By what you're suggesting we might as well build permanent military bases all over the frontier and plan on digging in with money, warm bodies and other resources for the next 100 or more years. What the heck, We can afford that. Make sure your kid signs up first and promises to put in 6 or 8 years.
And after we've been there 100 years I hope your letter survives to show people why we were stupid enough to buy into the notion that we can solve all the worlds problems by ourselves.
Or, we can scale down and start talking to the Taliban. They live there and the last election wasn't by any means legitimate.
However, seeing how you capitalized "socialist" I already know where you sympathy lies and it lies with leveling the place and wait for them to cry Uncle Sam.
As for the children, I imagine they really enjoy every time an errant attack on our part gets them or a parent or uncle or aunt killed. Also, when are the Afghans going to seriously stand up for what they want? In case you forgot, it's their country.”

C Pollard replied on Dec 24, 2009 at 11:01:59

“Yeah, his words about building hospitals, schools and removing landmines is "leveling the place." How ignorant are you? Yes, that was rhetorical.”

“I do. I've lived abroad and seen three types of public options at work and when greed is removed from the picture you get a house call from a doctor in the middle of the night and don't even have to be a resident. And the price is negligible.
So, yes, I do know what public options are. If more Americans really travelled and lived abroad they would too, instead of buying into the lies told on the house floor by nay-sayers and fear-mongers who were clueless or lied on purpose at the behest of our health care industry.
The problem in the USA is even those supporting the public option never even bothered to produce a campaign by which a variety of nations could have testified about how it works in their countries. It was like they wanted no unifying dialog to support their contentions.
Once again, we are the sole industrialized nation without a public option.
I guess we'll continue to have faith (a belief in something that cannot be proved) in a system that has failed us so many times that it's not even funny anymore. It makes me sad for my naive citizens.”

“I'm also disappointed but I'm not quitting the president. You do remember the last 30 years? The politics of greed, hate, fear? The capitulation of Dems to Rep badmouthing and the news media bowing to gossip and fear mongering? Don't Blame Obama for being human. He's still the best chance we've had in a long time.
I'm not a democrat for good reason. I'm a former member of both parties and while I agree Obama's dropped the ball so have we all. He inherited a HUGE mess. Expecting him to bear that burden alone is no way to be.
I see health care campaigns talking about their "victories" delivering a few thousand signatures to the floor and think to myself, "That's not a lot of people", and it isn't.
Now, a few hundred thousand, that's victory. Even while the public option was supported most people just hoped it would pass and did almost nothing to make sure that it would.
WE need to do MORE than hope.”

He's trying to be a facilitator. He's trying, but look at the wreck that was left to him, to all of us. He could do better, but so could we all. Remember, he didn't make this mess.
Also, remember, the Reps are doing nothing to help and frankly I don't want the country more run into the ground. Don't let their cynicism and avarice influence you.
Seriously, you're better than that.
Quit the Dems if you want to. Believe me, you have my sympathy. But don't give up the fight.”

“Actually, I'm not stupid enough to belong to a "party". It took me almost 20 years to figure out that neither party really cares about it's members as long as they get to draw a fat paycheck, accept money from the most corrupting influences and then all sign on for the same cowardice/stupidity when they really need to stand tall and show resolve and courage.
When is everyone going to learn that a party is supposed to be fun?
If I can manage to avoid party affiliation and still campaign for a party candidate than anyone else can too.
The sea change we need is only waiting for all of us to stop playing favorites to our baser aspirations.”

I have what's considered to be among the best of insurance and I can tell you it leaves a lot to be desired and I thank my gene pool every day that I'm a healthy person.
What kills me is you're naive enough to believe that the shrinking middle class (propped up by a majority of folks actually earning two incomes to make the requirement of being middle class) and growing poverty levels are the fault of lazy, do nothing people expecting a hand out. I can tell you from experience that a lot of very hard working people are not going to get the insurance they need and when they are finally forced on to the dole when their health fails them it will come out of your pocket while the ever growing wealthy maintain a lifestyle of growing excess. Congratulations. That koolaid must be pretty good.”

I'm just waiting for Americans as a whole, MY people, to stop playing computer games, stop eating fast food -that's slowing down their thinking process- and grow spines.
Dump the party system. Leave greed baying in the dark and start acting humane, intelligent people and like there is a future beyond a big screen TV while lolling on the couch.
WE lost this one. Political affiliations are ridiculous and thanks to them WE have lost another round to our REAL handlers, the big corporations and their lure of unfulfilled promises. Pelosi's not so much the problem as the symptom. WE ARE the PROBLEM. Don't kid yourselves.”

This Is Not Just America's War

Commented Dec 02, 2009 at 15:30:04 in World

“So, when did Pakistan, Iraq and Afghanistan get standing armies, air forces and globe spanning navies?
I'm sick unto absurdity over these chicken little scenarios. I'm all for helping Afghans, Pakistanis and Iraqis develop fairer nations with growing markets and better internal securities. However, we can't do it for them.
As for the so-called threat of terrorists (who, by the way, are not new in number, or scope, despite our newfound and unwarranted fear of them), please, tell me why we spend hundreds of billions in tax payer dollars and still have to be afraid of the underfunded squabblers/religious zealots?
Try the terrorists in New york to show we have nothing to fear from them and bring our soldiers home ASAP. Sometimes our "help" is more of a hinderance/crutch.”

lawyerfan replied on Dec 02, 2009 at 17:58:49

“I agree. The idea that terrorists present a "clear and present danger" sounds like something out of Rush Limbaugh's warped psyche. There is nothing clear about how or when terrorists might strike, but the idea that their activities are such a major threat to the civilized world that we have to wage war against the Taliban in order to protect ourselves from terrorists is just preposterous. We lost more American lives in Iraq than were lost in the 9/11 attacks. I don't mean to minimize the seriousness of 9/11, but it was a domestic security problem larger than but not unlike the Oklahoma City bombing or the earlier attempts to blow up the WTC. To raise it to the level of an act of war and then justify endless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan compounds the problem.
If it weren't so expensive and destructive, the war in Afghanistan would be laughable. What is our mission? We rooted out the Taliban several years ago, only to have them return like weeds pulled out of the front lawn. Meanwhile, in order to have someone to take up the job of policing the Afghan/Pakistan nether regions, we have had to make alliances with the devil. Ten or fifteen years from now our children will be looking at pictures of President Obama shaking hands with Hamid Karzai the way we looked at Donald Rumsfeld shaking hands with Sadam Hussein.”

Afghanistan: Obama Drops The Other Shoe

Commented Nov 30, 2009 at 23:02:13 in Politics

“Everyone who is badmouthing Obama is forgetting what the choice during the election was. Do any of you geniuses honestly believe McCain and Palin would have done anything differently in this area of interest? Please. They would have sent over a hundred thousand troops into Afghanistan.
Of course I'm very disappointed in Obama's decision but lay the blame on the feet of the lying generals too. Lay it on the Republicans who were calling Obama a coward for not sending more soldiers and faster. And then blame stupid Americans who regularly vented that sending troops to Afghanistan was the only way to keep America secure.
Had things gone south if he hadn't sent more soldiers I'm betting a lot of people would be blaming him, including his current detractors here.”

“Sorry to disappoint you but I'm never scared of stupid. Palin's a dim bulb and those who follow her could be legion but that just means they're not too bright either. The failing of our societal ideals looms large on a regular basis. As a "liberal" the only thing that concerns me is the lack of real, quantifiable progress as a nation and as a people. I have no time to get worked up over Palin or those who like her.
So many like her have come before and more will follow. Train wrecks from Phyllis Schlafly to Andria Dworkin are a given.”

Christian Leaders Scapegoat Gays on Marriage

Commented Nov 25, 2009 at 15:57:51 in Politics

“Nolookpass is another denier of facts so pointing them out may be a waste of time. Seeing as he missed the most obvious points I'd say noeinstein is just another of the many illogical foils out there.
I've always looked at the way people see marriage as this ultimate state of heterosexual validity as being pretty backwards. The same goes for all the "religious" people who claim to be the moral high ground. Prisons are full of born again Christians (I guess al those churches they passed on the way to repeated felonies would have had a better influence on them if they'd incorporated drugs and hookers into their recruitment efforts). Then there all all those trashy unmarried couples -with kids- who claim Christianity or some other faith but who can't be bothered to get married. I have no problem with unmarried folks with kids (or without them) who have ongoing relationships but to claim to be Christian strikes me as odd given the claims of the signatories.”

The argument is that this is an all volunteer military and no one can claim to be a CO after taking the oath. On some very rare occasions the status can be granted with people in extenuating circumstances. Considering all the military members who have tried to get CO status only a very small number have succeeded.
In short, especially with the PC "we love Muslims" surface attitude conveyed by the military though a very different attitude is evident once the grunts start drinking) this guy never had a chance of getting out.”

NARAL and Planned Parenthood: Ineffectiveness Anti-Choice Democrats Can Rely On

Commented Nov 10, 2009 at 00:40:53 in Politics

“Actually the poll divides Americans pretty neatly down the middle when it comes to abortion on demand. Also, you and so many others miss a lot of serious points:
1. Nobody is naturally a good parent and the abused, neglected and murdered children in our nation are proof of this. Being a parent is a lifetime responsibility as well as learned behavior. Having sex is no way to determine parenthood.
2. No one in our country is forced to get an abortion but you seem to think parenthood should forced on anyone with biology to be one. The only out you'll consider is rape and incest? That's generous. There's also the fact that some people -despite having the biological ability to have children- simply are not cut out to be parents and no shame should go with that realization.
3. The orphanage option is a sad joke. The social and biological bonding between a woman and her child, temporary as it might be, makes giving the child up for adoption problematic at best. And if given up for adoption being brown skinned, underweight, overweight, not cute enough, etc, means those children can look forward to life in an orphanage.
So, until kids have love and a minimally good quality of life (just one loving and responsible parent for a start) abortion is a fact of life and limiting or denying women access is a control issue and not a moral one.”

Freedbird replied on Nov 10, 2009 at 09:34:10

“The three points you make have merit to them, yet they walk a dangerous line of moral justification. By predeterming that the value of an unborn child is worthless to society it jusifies the termination of that life. The life of all human beings must be protected equally in our society or else we fall into the trap that hundreds of societies throughtout history have done of justifing genocide by deeming one group of people as having little or no worth to society. We have dehumanized the life of an unborn child and used abortion as a convenient way to get rid of the "less valuable" members of our society whom "might be guilty" of having poor parents or "might be guilty" of becoming a future criminal, yet we make this judgement before they are given even a chance at life.

Prejudging the possible future quality of life a person might have is understandable, but then to use that information to determine their right to life is to say that not all human life is of value.”

“Politicizing access to healthcare is a battleground that the intolerant and indeed, the hateful have created.
Even with abortion numbers dwindling with the rising numbers of unintended births winding up on welfare roles the anti-welfare, anti-abortion folks gain traction with politicians even supposedly "liberal" ones. It just doesn't get any dumber than this without us being part of a police state. The numbers of women dying in back alley abortions almost stopped in the early seventies and now the numbers are increasing again.
I guess kids going hungry, getting illnesses they can't afford treatment for, being abused and killed in fractured households in the grip of never ending poverty, while in the midst of an economic downturn (the likes of which are still growing), these are STILL not enough reasons to start having sympathy with common sense.
Let's force women to either stop being human by having sex or force them to have babies they can't even insure. Just keep the poor, ever growing, on the ever shrinking dole while bailout recipients hand each other million dollar bonuses funded by the tax payers.
What a country...”

“I confess, I looked. I don't think it's pathetic but it is typical of many with the Hollywood mindset. It's really sad in a small, funny way. I do not feel bad for her kids because they are hopefully learning something about the vulnerability of celebrity. So many people want Pam or want to be as "successful" as she is without taking that life into context. There's nothing really special about celebrity unless you like the idea of losing your privacy as well as the overwhelming need to be seen once the eyes of your fans are starting to lock their gaze onto the next "hot" person who comes along.
Pam used to be quite the looker. Now she skates along the edge of obscurity and outrageous behavior. She's not sexy. The augmentation and too much make-up did away with any eroticism she once had. Still, there are legions of guys, and probably more than a few gals who would line up to have sex with the woman. Really, that makes me feel bad for her. She's her own worst example. I hope she's having a laugh over it. Her self made parody of herself is pretty much all she has left.
If this ride ever stops she'll be devastated by the stillness.
I hope she learns to adjust.”

“If you credit Reagan with helping tear down the Berlin wall you really haven't been reading actual history. Talk to the military personnel who worked the Brandenburg gate to find out what really happened. Also, bankrupting the Soviet Union has led to a worsening state of affairs as the looting of Russian and Ukrainian arsenals, of both conventional and nuclear materials, has led to a crisis all over the world through the expanded arming of terrorists and rogue states with those weapons and fissionable materials. Bankrupting an already pathetically weakened Soviet state hastened a chaos we cannot contain. I take it you missed that fact. It figures. Reaganauts always do.
And let's talk about how the drug trade has been pretty much dominated by exKGB members, now heading up a global organized crime ring that is making the old Italian mafia look quaint by comparison. Thanks to this global criminal syndicate the slave trade, harvesting of human organs and drug smuggling has gone through the roof in all sectors around the globe.
Thank you Ronald Reagan.
