“It's should be criminal that California's cigarette taxes were given to an agency that squandered tens of millions of dollars promoting, lobbying and then paying for fluoride chemicals to be added to public water supplies. There is a U.S. dental crisis caused by lack of dental care. 80% of dentists refuse Medicaid patients and 130 million Americans lack dental insurance. Two children died in recent years from the consequences of UNtreated tooth decay.
The obvious solution: legislators should mandate dentists to treat more low-income people. But dentists don't like mandates - for themselves anyway. Instead, organized dentistry lobbies heavily and expensively for governments to mandate fluoridation - usually at the state level where they have more influence and where constituents have less power.
Fluoridation gives the illusion dentists care about low income Americans whom they won't actually allow in their dental chairs. All legislators see is the power and money behind the American Dental Association and all its constituent groups.
People need to organize, petition, call, email, write and visit their legislators and show up at city council meetings to get fluoridation stopped.
