“Be honest. You simply want to attack unions by impugning their origins. Why not talk about their benefits if you care about them? I know a fair amount about unions but I don't think my state of knowledge is what your attacks are really about.”

“I'm not asking you to believe me, I'm just asking you to do your own research.  There are books, essays and other things you can read and learn about the subject.   Are you afraid of the truth? Is that why you'd rather attack me than do some honest research?”

“I think this is arguable both ways- arguing sensible regulation rather than no regulation is a winner, to me. I think the fact that this adulteration of food for the convenience of the food industry, along with the adaptation that the food industry has already made to remove transfats makes this ban sensible. It will be easy for the food industry to adapt to this ban, to our benefit.”

“Did you eat hamburger before they banned meat from cows which had consumed cow brain as part of their energy consumption. That ban was done so we didn't get Mad Cow Disease. Do you support such regulation or not? Another regulation keeps the percentage of animal waste and animal parts down below a certain percentage of the total product. Do you oppose that regulation. How about the percentage of mercury in a product. Should they have to tell you about it. In a modern industrial society regulation of harmful products in the food supply is necessary to everyone who doesn't produce their own food. Resisting over regulation is fine. I'm on board. Opposing regulation without descrimmination between regs make no sense.”

keraz on Nov 8, 2013 at 12:20:59

“This is where liberals are off the mark. I am not opposed to some regulations on food safety such as feces content, bacteria content, disease control, etc. I am, however, opposed to regulations that ban things that are relatively harmless when taken in small quantities. The substances you mentioned are not. ”

“Oh we get it. Slowly you take away our pensions so less have them every year. Slowly you take away our healthcare so less people are covered by their employers. Slowly you move the jobs out to foreign labor which has no labor protection or environmental protection. Then you pin all these changes on the dems. They are a club like you are but at least their members are wise to the undue influence of money. At least they try to give us healthcare so that we can go out and work- you offer only weakness and reliance on rich employers for mercy. Soon you will try to remove Medicare under the guise of reform. We know about your empty rhetoric.”

“No system of recommendation is free of bias.  On the other hand, if one ate in strict accordance with "Plate" one would be eating far more healthily than the avg Amer diet.  Take out the dairy, decrease the grains and I think the recommendations are fairly good.”

James Kling on Oct 18, 2013 at 10:15:35

“I agree with you, although that might be damning with faint praise: it's hard to imagine a diet worse than the SAD.

IMO, there is much that can be debated about the food recs, but people who reduce their refined grains and sugars and remove industrial oils from their diet by definition won't be eating much if any processed/convenience/fast food. Just eating a diet of whole foods is the biggest step in the right direction.”

“Your body needs nitrogen- that's not in any of the "fuels" you mention, amongst other nutrients.”

oliverljames on Oct 18, 2013 at 22:11:49

“There is plenty of nitrogen in your body - it creates itself from the moment the sperm meets the egg - from that point the amount of everything, including nitrogen, increases as you grow - all humans babies, teens etc have the same amount of nitrogen in them - which should tell you that it doesn't come from our diets. So too with proteins and amino acids. It's all part of our genetic blueprint - no matter what a mom does, the baby will have the same amount of proteins and amino acids and eyeballs and nitrogen and fingers and toes, and hair and B and A vitamins etc. This all barring some extreme genetic defects - which are still not the norm - the norm again is as I mentioned - we will all have the same things when born - no matter what. If you scan my posts from a month ago(?), I explain the nitrogen fixation paradox.
All we need are fuels in the form of glucose, water, sunlight and oxygen.”
