Biz Stone To Murdoch: Paying For Internet Content Won't Work
Commented Nov 22, 2009 at 09:05:57 in Technology
“For starters: Who in their right mind would ever pay for content to The NY Post in particular, besides the vain glorious NYers and celebrites profiled on page six? The Post's recently redesigned web pages are horrible, It's trashy, and difficult to navigate. I never, ever, would knowingly pay for Murdoch owned content online or elsewhere . I prefer getting my news from any other source possible. Full stop. He bastardizes journalism and is nothing but money mongerer.”

Warren Buffet Tells Columbia Business Students: "The Financial Panic Is Over" (VIDEO)

“Give me five minutes alone in a room with Buffet. Just five. That's all it would take for me to slap him silly. Has he lost his "f"ing mind? Several weeks ago he spoke of how we were out of the worst of it. What is this guy drinking? Really. What potion is he drinking to be thinking/spewing such utter nonsense? I know he's a billionaire, but is he that out of touch with the rest of the country? Obviously, the answer is yes, he is disturbingly out of touch with working class Americans and what they are going through. I am so sick of this old man, words fail me.
What gall this billionaire has. What audacity. This guy is clueless to the plight of the vast majority of Americans. Just clueless. Besides, where was he the past five years warning folks of such a meltdown. Roubini has twice the intellect and insight Buffet has.”

He's a real character, says what he thinks without spite or malice, and is loved by a great many people from all areas of the political spectrum. Who aren't conspiracy theorists, that is.”

Diane Sawyer's Rihanna Interview Brings "20/20" Huge Ratings
Commented Nov 10, 2009 at 08:01:27 in Media
“What impressed me most about Rihanna in the interview with Diane was how thoughtfully she spoke. For someone of her age, let alone anybody, she showed herself to be someone with great intellect, compassion, understanding, strength of character, faith and forgiveness. What more could Chris Brown or any of her fans ask for? She is not only beautiful in the physical sense, but far more importantly, she is beautiful in the emotional and spiritual sense. She's an amazing lady.”
tlgeiger62 replied on Nov 10, 2009 at 16:32:07

Malcolm Gladwell: Aspiring Journalists Should Skip J-School
Commented Oct 20, 2009 at 15:24:03 in Media
“This isn't a new approach to journalism, at all. In fact, the vast majority of journalists working within the BBC come from very specific higher academic degrees/pursuits and then go on to work within those same disciplines albeit as journalists within the BBC. The British have had the right idea for decades. The US, not so much.”
SarahTerryCobo replied on Oct 20, 2009 at 18:37:30
“I completely agree that "generalists" are disappearing, but I completely disagree with the notion people shouldn't go to J-school (with one reservation).
It may come as a surprise, but like me, many of my colleagues in UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism had "specialty" degrees in other areas before we made our way there. Several of my colleagues in the Knight Program for Science and Environmental Journalism had undergrad degrees in various science disciplines--mine was Environmental Policy. But there are other ways to become a "specialist." One of my fellow TAs for an Intro to Mass Comm class, studied Journalism at AZ State and was pursuing a Masters in Public Policy--hers was the opposite way to approach the education, but we have similar goals.
I learned many important lessons while in J-school, including the discovery that complicated topics (whether in business, science and environmental issues, public heath) are best covered by someone who has an intimate understanding of the subject. Perhaps one of the most important things I learned was how to use new media tools to tell my stories and get rid of the idea I am a "print" journalist.
There are valid reasons for not attending J-school--most importantly paying for it.
I think journalism HAS to get "smarter" to survive. Hopefully there will soon be a higher economic value for specialized knowledge and compelling visual presentation than there currently is for sensational, slick, celebrity-driven info-tainment.”

“Actually, it's not altogether off the mark. She was born to a life of privilege, wealth and extravagance and has often played the role of bored model largely due to the fact that she never really had to work to support herself to begin with. Hence her latest reference as to why she first began psychoanalysis in her late 20's: something to the effect of having a vague sense of boredom. Ah yes Carla, being one of the highest paid models and working only when you wanted to (as has often been reported over the years,) being so well educated and having a string of highly chronicled love affairs with any number of men around the world can be so damn BORING. Do many of us a favor Carla, and sell it to the less gullible/intelligent please. She really is so transparent at times it's staggering..”
