“I wonder about that as well. Since the advent of "no fault" divorce it has become a big business is what it comes down to. It cost far less to be legally married. A couple hundred dollars at most with the blood tests and marriage license. The wedding celebration is what costs the big money and that is in no way mandated by law so can not be factored in as it is a voluntary expense. Divorce is the money maker. Sadly that is why you will soon see people like yourself who lived together a number of years be compelled to have to go through a quasi divorce procedure as well if/when the relationships end. It's already gaining traction in Canada and will soon be here.”

“I agree this photo essay is a caricature. To provoke thought is one thing. To provoke anger directed at certain people is very different and dangerous. Angry people do not make good decisions and tend to be intractable in their views. To fight poverty you must examine all the route causes, no matter how politically incorrect they may be, and address them. As you said, that is beyond the scope of this format. But to forment anger because well off people enjoy the fruits of their labor and making it seem like they are rubbing it into the faces of the poorer people is not fair or honest.”

“Just because people are willing to take any job right now, in your words, in no way compels a company to vastly overpay individuals for working them, Einstien. American companies, or any company, should not get a tax credit for employing US citizens when in the US. They should have to pay a penalty for each job they outsource, say about 50k a year per employee hired overseas. Undocumented workers is overexagerated, especially in the higher paying jobs and by that I mean $20+ an hour. Illegals are allowed to get drivers licences, go to school, college at in state tuition rates, and whole lots of government aid right now, all that should end, as well as being able to hold a job, if you want to make things better for US citizens. By imposing higher taxes on business, costing them more money, is not going to make companies hire more people and have to put out more money. That is basic economics. If you think Democrats are better, answer me these questions. Why didn't the Democrats close these loopholes when they had control of the House, Senate, and the office of President? Why did they overwhelmingly vote to give the almost 1 trillion dollars of corporate welfare out? Why had they not passed one article of legislation to help the US worker in any way?”

The people employed at the restaurants are here and have to be for obvious reaasons. Secondly off shore tax havens are available to anyone as well. And finally how is taking taxes from these corporations and the government taking the money translate into increasing wages for working people?”

Take all the tax loopholes away from the corporations.
Leave one.
A tax credit for each U.S. citizen or documented worker they employ.

In order to get the credit the corporation must submit documents the employee is legal to work in the U.S.

“But how many people actually give their all and best to achieve being "rich". Not many in my experience. Most strived for being solid middle class. The house, family, good job and so on. My uncle grew up in the depression and at a young age decided he was going to be rich. Through hard work, personal sacrafice and education he died a multi-millionaire. Not bad for someone who had to go out into the fields to pick peppers, apples, asparagus and so on to help the family survive during the depression. How many of the children or even adults of today will do that, not many I can assure you. They would rather collect from the government and complain. And there is the problem. People think they are entitled to things without putting any real effort to achieve them.”

“So all those gun control laws that have been passed constitute nothing now. The main problem was and still is in enforcement of these laws. For you gun control advocates the only outcome desired is a total ban of guns for private citizens. Odd how you clearly state the hard work to limit these other causes but do not advocate the total ban of cigarettes, alcohol or fatty foods as those actions would dramatically reduce the numbers. Why? Because most people enjoy alconol from time to time and enjoy fatty foods to eat and a lot of people enjoy a good cigar, pipe or cigarette. So you see no need to deprive yourself of these things but do see the need to deprive the over 99% of gun owners who do nothing wrong and are responsible, of what they like.”

“Here in NJ people are, shall I dare say, different. There are a lot of people who would rather not work hard to attain success but are content to get money for doing as little as possible. Education in these households is not stressed as a way to better oneself. And money pumped in from the government is no answer. When cities like Newark, Camden, AC, and Asbury Park spend 28k per year per student and are the worse performing areas and towns like Holmdel, Colts Neck, Cranford spend less than half that per student and are among the top performing schools in the state and country shows it's not money that makes the difference. Couple this with a losing of morality and an entitlement mentality and there you go. Blue laws went away, holidays are just another day, and blaming others for your lifestyle runs rampent. Violence in these cities is unbelievable. I'm not suprised at incidents that take place here on those big shopping days. But I'm going on a tangent. I guess what I'm really saying is based upon this blog the blame for these things can not be layed at the feet of the rich. Most of these people put in long hours, worked weekends, went to good colleges and did well academically to get where they now are. They did not walk out of college and into a top floor office.”

But I think we can agree that this photo essay is a caricature at best, and not indicative of the host of problems that need to be solved. That is a discussion for another day.
But the idea behind most photo essays like this is to provoke thought, and in that sense, I would say that it was a success. ”

“We can get into debates on how the rich got to the point where they are at. Many top executives worked 12-16 hour days, weekends, traveled alot on the way up the ladder. Some started their own business and worked very hard to make it successful. Virtually none walked out of college and into a CEO position. They are mostly not sitting behind a desk, rubbing their hands together, maniacally laughing, counting their money. Most have worked hard to get to the position they now enjoy and deserve to reap benifits from it. I am well compensated when I have to work holidays. But also enjoy time with family and friends when I don't. I understood the demands of my job when I accepted it. This working on Thanksgiving day is a very new occurance. It never was a busiest shopping day, the Friday after always was. But the consumer has dictated that the money is there and since the CEO's job is to generate highest profits they take advantage of it. If the average American didn't show the willingness to go out shopping on Thanksgiving the stores would be closed. The reality is the American people themselves are the ones that drive this. The rich still were doing all those things when the stores were closed on Thanksgiving. Now wages are a valid topic to be discussed but once again the people have shown that they are willing to work for what is offered.”

“I work shift work so I have worked all holidays a lot of times in my life. It was and still is my choice to work the job that requires it. Not having a choice in the matter is wrong as is the case with these retail stores. But who was at the stores creating the chaos? I was off, I'm not a CEO, and I wasn't. If people didn't go out to shop that day the stores will not be open next year on Thanksgiving. But that was not the case. The masses have shown that they WILL GLADLY go out shopping that day. They are not forced to do so, so in reality who is forcing the workers to be at their jobs. They would of been better off showing what the last picture did and expand on that. That they are not paid enough at a full time job to even afford a nice Thanksgiving dinner, whether working or off. The rich having a nice dinner, going on vacation, driving an expensive car is just envy.”

jwcmass on Dec 5, 2013 at 14:01:42

“I realize that there are certain jobs which require someone present 365 days a year. Police, Fire Departments, hospitals, all require staffing. Usually holidays are rotated so that people work some days, and have other days off. They also would get a paid day off on an alternate day.
But there is no reason why retail stores have to be opened. And I agree that it is entirely the shopper's choice to be there.
However, I can tell you that there were no scenes like this at stores in Massachusetts, because we still have (along with Rhode Island and Maine) some relic of the blue laws, and stores are banned from opening on those days.
And efforts to CHANGE those laws have FAILED. So it IS possible for people to decide that this kind of behavior is not going to happen, and that unless someone HAS to work, (as in the above-mentioned areas), then they will get a day off.
But when you try to tell a story like this merely through pictures, then you are going to get these kinds of images, which do not tell the entire story.”

“Do you just conjure up numbers to fit your views. There was no indication of any exponential growth in Oct and Nov at all so how did you magically not only come up with it in Dec but then proceeded to turn the monthly growth into a daily growth in Dec. So far Dec trends out to about 450k for the month. I will even give you an extra month of growth. According to these numbers here, as monthly data shows an aprroximately 400% per day growth in sign ups Jan should average 58000 per day or !.8 million. So by the end of March that will be about 6 mil signed up on the website. Even making the very huge assumptions that everyone who signed up enrolled for healthcare and were also uninsured as well it still falls short. Most likely there will be at absolute best about 3 million enrolled. Since my numbers as well as yours are dubious at best I wouldn't crow about any success just yet. It's just wishful thinking. Current polling shows an overwhelming amout of young people have no interst in signing up, the main financial supporters of this scheme, so that has to be taken into account as well. The fine, oops, I meant tax they have to pay is minimal the first year so don't expect any change of heart till at least 2015.”

They will vilify and attempt to destroy you if you do not toe their line. The thing they seem not to understand is most people could care less about their sexual orientation but do care when they then proceed to tear down and mock their moral/relgious beliefs to shove their lifestyle down their throats.”

If you are LGBT, you do not deserve the same rights possessed by the religious right - the right wing will vilify and attempt to destroy you if you demand those rights. The thing the religious right does not seem to understand is that most people could care less about their beliefs, only their imposition on other people, and their attempt to legislate America's morality, as the ultra religious folks proceed to tear down and mock LGBT sexual orientation and their pursuit of equal rights.”
