Obama Afghanistan Speech: Reactions, Analysis
Commented Dec 02, 2009 at 12:16:01 in Politics
“As usual, the pundits missed the main event: the beginnings of a definitive statement on Obama's foreign policy. Look at the second part of the speech where he ties American military and diplomatic power to American economic power. Perhaps the media has been dulled by 8 years of Bush in which no one in that Administration was even capable of stating a coherent policy that they just completely missed it. Instead, they're spending all their time talking "surge" and party politics. Idiots.
Also, it was an admirable rally to the body politic to find something to unify around. He also used the opportunity to speak to the American people about core values. This is important during the times we are facing.
Every pundit I've read so far is worrying about the trivialities of this speech. Frame it in the big picture and you'll understand. Once again, idiots.”

“Here's what the guy should do: go to all the pro-gay marriage advocacy groups and tell them if they support his effort to get enough signatures to appear on the ballot he will pull the initiative a few weeks before the election so that no one can vote on it. It would be an incredible way to get press and really turn the argument against gay marriage on its head.”
Washington Times Runs Anti-Obama Birther Ad With Racial Undertones
Commented Nov 30, 2009 at 17:40:21 in Politics
“I honestly don't think this is racist. If it was racist, the monkeys would be a symbol for Obama. But they're not. In this ad they are symbols for Congress, the Courts, and Media and all are clearly labeled. As we know, the Congress and the Courts are overwhelmingly white and the Media is a huge amalgamation of any number of news outlets that cannot be identified as over representing one group or another. Huff Po is beginning to become the "paper that cried racism." It's sad because when it really happens, who's going to believe this group? Not many.

“At this point, part of passing health care reform is getting the word out that the people who oppose it are doing so out of ignorance, fear of the unknown, sometimes straight-up bigotry, and most often because they just aren't all that bright and are therefore easily duped.
I'm not saying that we should gloat that we're smarter than they are...but if they are trying to be the "trustworthy" one in the fight, we have to show that they aren't trustworthy, and one way to do that is to show that they just aren't that quick on the uptake.”

“The problem isn't so much that these people can't justify Palin's favored policies, it's that Palin can't either.
You can mock these people all you like, they arguably deserve it. It IS satisfying to watch one's ideological opposition struggle to articulate even the most basic aspects of their foggy worldview, but that just further entrenches an already-besieged position. Even if someone recognizes the foolishness on display in this video, their views are unlikely to change if they sympathize with - and see scorn being heaped on - these interviewees.
Though the video's editing had a derisive tone, this interviewer was pretty respectful and mostly asked good, open-ended questions. I like that. Too much of this kind of material plays into the mischaracterization of liberals as snobbish pricks looking down their over-educated noses at "regular folk" and sneering. Granted, this kind of thing is not often written or recorded for the purpose of persuasion, but as a kind of tribalistic rallying cry. How much more of that do we really need, though?
I wish more of the commentariat remembered two of the words commonly used in dictionaries to define the word liberal: "open" and "generous". It's true that you're unlikely to change a die-hard Palin supporter's views on (for example) health care, but we could change a lot of other people's minds if we tried to learn their language (so to speak) and didn't treat them like idiots just because they did not speak ours.”

“I would imagine that there has been any number on such interviews given that Obama has been in the media spotlight since 2004, so it shouldn't be any problem for someone to obtain archival tapes that would support your supposition. However given that such a tape or tapes has never surfaced and considering the amount of energy the religious right has expended to destroy him, I have serious doubts as to the validity of your statement.”

“I love the "going Galt" promise from Republicans when it comes to taxes - "raise taxes on the rich and they'll stop being awesome" is how it usually goes. Guess what, Andrea - this is America and there's about 400 million people in line ready and willing to take any of their places if they decide to "shrug." Do we need "rich people" in a capitalist society? Absolutely. Do we need the current individuals who make up the "rich people"? It depends who you're asking and on what day of the week.”

Bill Clinton To Speak To Democratic Senators About Health Bill

“Even being pro-choice, I do not believe the government should subsidize abortions. They should subsidize pregnancy prevention. Insurance plans don't subsidize artificial lungs for long-time smokers. But they do subsidize anti-smoking treatments and products. It should be the same way with abortions. Prevention should be subsidized. But if you get pregnant, you should pay for the termination out of pocket (which I do believe is a woman's right to choose to do).
And if liberals vote against this reform effort because of this very small and insignificant margin-type ideological litmus test issue, I will never donate or door knock for any Democrat again. I will simply stay home. How many times will the far left cut off their noses to spite their faces. Shut up and govern!”

As for your point on tort reform, it's a state issue regarding the regulation of what is considered frivolous tort. That's why there are state bars. You should know this as a states rights kind of voter. Perhaps I'll put it to you in a slogan, since that's the only way Republicans communicate: "Get government out of my courtroom!"
As for monopolization, I do my own research and I'll explain as quickly as I can: right now, insurers are discouraged to monopolize because there cannot be wholesale M&As.”
