“You forgot #3 & #5 .. the most important ones

3. because if we don't pay attention she might get away with it..
5. because ignoring her gives her the lattitude to do what she wants, which is as clear and present danger to democracy as we have ever faced.

What you call comic relief is actually the vigilant eye Mr. Jefferson said was needed to sustain this republic.”

Water Is The New Oil

Water Is The New Oil

Commented Dec 07, 2009 at 13:13:10 in Books

“The fact that the next wars will be over water rather than oil may be a surprise in areas where the expectation is that water will come out at the turn of a tap - and one need not consider source or quality. But it is no surprise out here in the hinterland where dependency on private wells requires knowledge of what's happening in local aquifers (and distant ones too).

Our sources are being contaminated by volatile chemicals and mbte's... reservoirs are being invaded by millefois and other toxic flora.. and bottled water factories are depleting volume en masse.

Prepare for the recylcing body waste suits ala Dune.”

StevieRae replied on Dec 07, 2009 at 13:40:04

“Agree. And these "wars" over water in the future will involve more than just countries, there will be internal wars/battles between citizens within countries, like ours.”

It's a Helluva State

Commented Dec 05, 2009 at 23:18:31 in New York

“I am for marriage rights for ALL citizens because I recognize that marriage is a financial arrangement. My post was limited to questioning the actions of the coop board in denying co-ownership by non-related parties.

I understand the plight you are going through, which is why I choose to live in a state that recognizes marriage for ALL citizens.

And I want religious organizations to stay out of everybody's lives.”

“Chalk it up to the privilege of living in a democracy. People pay for public schools whether they have children or not. I pay for lots of things I'll never use.. like oil depletion allowances and subsidies to agri-industries./ and I'm sure a few of my farthings have found their way into H3llburton coffers... But one way to correct the fiscal Medicare problems would be for "superpatriots" to opt out ..”

America is the prime example of taxation without representation. Only an idiot would think the majority of Americans were even barely represented by their government.”

It's a Helluva State

Commented Dec 05, 2009 at 22:00:59 in New York

“It must be a quirk of coop ownership - as all other real estate transactions do not require marriage or even a relationship for co-ownership of a deed. I would wonder why their denial of ownership rights to your partner would not come under federal real estate bans of discrimination based on sex (gender) rather than preference.”

Vectorbabe replied on Dec 05, 2009 at 22:59:39

“It is possible that the co-op board would allow her to assume ownership rights.

But it still doesn't make our problem as easy to solve as a couple with a marriage license would be able to solve.

And it doesn't help the tax burdens she would face.

And I really wouldn't feel comfortable knowing that any plans I have made for her in my will could lead her to have to sue under discrimination based on gender.

If my partner and I want to form the sort of commitment that is available to a man and woman, shouldn't we have that right? Along with all the legal benefits that commitment provides?

Of course we still haven't spoken about insurance benefits, hospital visits, adoption of children, living wills, power of attorney, etc, etc.

But trust me. I would never demand any religious organization to recognize my civil partnership/marriage as being the same as the commitments they demand of the people in their organization.

But, at the same time, I want religious organizations to stay out of my life.”

Large corporations have driven a stake into the heart of small businesses all over this country - just take a real good look at the names on the marquee at any mall - then take a walk down main street in the same town and count the vacancies.
Hope you're fully aware of the high failure rate in start-up biomed industry.”

dzagama replied on Dec 02, 2009 at 22:37:48

I find it exciting, but I'm young.”
