“I just don't understand why women are having a fit about the mammogram thing, yet NOT having any fits at all about the carcinogens in our environment that are helping to cause cancer in the first place...such as GMO's in virtually all foods, hormones in beef and chicken, mercury in seafood, Rbgh in milk ,yogurt, ice cream, contaminants (such as pharmaceuticals ,among other things)in our drinking water, known carcinogens in personal care products and house-cleaners,etc,etc. Why not put your energies on keeping the horses in the barn, rather than trying to catch them once they have gotten out-so to speak?”

What Is A Woman To Do?

Commented Nov 29, 2009 at 22:36:22 in Living

“I suggest you read about non-ionizing radiation that you are subjecting your breasts to whenever you get a mammogram.Read the website by Dr. Samuel Epstein, www.preventcancer.com. There are other ,more pro-active ways to reduce your risks of breast cancer, than mammograms.A vegetable and fruit-based diet, exercise, vitamin D,will go further in protecting your health than mammograms will.”

Beyond the Headlines and Under the Bra

Commented Nov 17, 2009 at 22:10:03 in Living

“I don't see this as about the money. Click on www.preventcancer.com and you can see that Huff Post blogger, Dr. Samuel Epstein, has been talking about the dangers of mammograms for years. Lancet, the noted British medical journal, published a study about the hazards of mammograms about 15 years ago...exactly the same information that appeared in American newspapers today. The bottom line is, we all need to hold pharmaceutical companies, agri-businesses, food companies, corporate and individual polluters responsible for the deteriorating health of the planet and all of the life on it. At the rate we are going, we all need to be tested every year on every organ and molecule in our bodies for cancer, not just breast and prostate.”

Remembering Patrick Swayze and a Campaign to End Cancer

“Watch THE WORLD ACCORDING TO MONSANTO. And say "hello" to Obama's appointment as senior advisor to the FDA, Mr. Michael Taylor, former lobbyist and lawyer for Monsanto. When 1 out of every 90 babies born have a form of autism, and everyone and their mother has cancer, I'd say look at the elephant in the room.”

“What good is that going to do when there are potent carcinogens all around us? When one out of every 90 children born today will have a form of autism? When studies show that the GMO's in our food supply are causing damage at the cellular level? Why not address the issues of why people are getting sick in the first place ? Watch THE WORLD ACCORDING TO MONSANTO. Oh, and a big "HELLO" to Michael Taylor, Obama's appointment as senior advisor to the FDA, and former lawyer and lobbyist for Monsanto.”

“AND, Obama appointed Michael Taylor, former lobbyist for MONSANTO, as senior sdvisor to the FDA. Monsanto is seeking to control the world's food supply, and force GMO seeds and foods down our throats, and we won't have an option for any other foods if they get their way. Environmental physicians issued an unprecedented position paper stating that doctors need to advise their patients to avoid all GMO foods because of the potential cellular damage caused by them. We will need alot of health care in some way or form because people are getting sicker and sicker, cancer is epidemic, auto-immune diseases are quite common, obesity is commonplace, etc. And the FDA is incestuously close to the mega-companies that are poisoning us for their own profit. Google Monsanto, Michael Taylor, GMO seeds, and see for yourself.”

On Health Care, if Everyone Is Happy, Nothing Is Getting Done

On Health Care, if Everyone Is Happy, Nothing Is Getting Done

Commented Aug 07, 2009 at 08:27:04 in Politics

“My husband did a surgery program in the Army, and he was so frustrated because the clinics closed every day at 4 pm, and no one would do any work after that. The OR crews, the nurses, etc., said that they got paid the same no matter if they worked or went home, so at closing time, they were going home. He thinks that it is interesting that none of the lawyers in DC are addressing the malpractice abuses. In Texas, now that physicians limits have been brought down, lawyers just aren't interested in "justice" anymore, because they can't get a million dollar payoff. Also, why can't insurance companies be forced to compete across state lines? Simple and competitive. Finally, my husband is a cardiovascular surgeon, working 15 hour days for the past 20 years. It used to be that 4 medical students vied for each cardiovascular fellowship. Now, most of these spots are vacant. No one wants to be a CV surgeon anymore, as the physical demand is great, the pay off is small (if any),and the lawyers are rubbing their hands together with glee at the pot of gold around every doctors' head ....easy prey and fairly easy money for anyone with a law degree. With lawyers and insurance companies running decisions in Washington, we don't stand a chance.”

On Health Care, if Everyone Is Happy, Nothing Is Getting Done

Commented Aug 06, 2009 at 15:53:18 in Politics

“Just curious....nothing is being said about malpractice reform (because everyone making the laws are lawyers and that would cut into some big profits). Also, why don't they make it mandatory that insurance companies cut across state lines? That would force insurance companies to be competitive .Also, why did Obama put Michael Taylor as senior advisor to the FDA when Taylor used to lobby for Monsanto? (If you don't know about Monsanto, just watch the movie Michael Clayton and substitute TRUNORTH with MONSANTO...same deal.) We are supposed to trust THIS government, now, with our HEALTH? I don't think so!”

Chaimirija replied on Aug 06, 2009 at 18:45:46

“No, it would not. Each state has a different set of rules, especially about mandated benefits.

Oh, and as for tort reform: the malpractice insurance companies are currently PROFITABLE.”

The Plight Of New York's Small Business Owners

Commented Jun 25, 2009 at 21:37:18 in New York

“I agree....I don't understand. I have a very small boutique, but it generates thousands of dollars a month in sales taxes for the state of Texas, and the same in taxes that support local schools, police department, etc. If many small businesses can't keep going, where is the money going to come from for these things?Small businesses are the backbone of economies, so why does it seem that they are being overlooked and dismissed ?Luckily for me, my shop is an amusing hobby, but the money it generates is real . When the time comes that the pressures outweigh the joys, I will close shop and garden or something. Has anyone in Washington ever had a real job? Maybe former small business owners should start running for office.”

“No way! I have a shop in a high-priced shopping center, and the center has provided an expensive, clearly marked sign that says that this particular parking space, right in front of the door to my shop, is for my specific customers, only.Well, all day long, my manager and I deal with people pulling up and parking in this space, then walking or even running as fast as they can, to say, Starbuck's. Many times, they hold business meetings at Starbuck's, so they are in my parking space for hours. Do I say, "God bless them and give them a long life"....NO! I wouldn't be able to pay my lease! We have to keep an eye on this space all day long, in order to protect it, somewhat -or actually, very much like a territorial dog! We are horrified at the rudeness and indifference of so many people, and the way that we deal with it is, fifty times a day or so, run outside, try to get the attention of the person, and ask them to please move their car or doublepark by the curb. sometimes they tell us that they can park there all day long, and that there is nothing we can do about it! This is true, so then we say, "Well, we will be doing some furniture spray-painting out front, so hopefully no paint will get on your car". That usually works! Remember, even Jesus got angry at people that behaved disrepectfully.”

MerhabaAbi replied on Mar 27, 2009 at 16:38:44

“Hi olivine,

If you have a lease on that parking spot, it is for your business enterprise. Perhaps you could install a parking meter or post a sign $10.00 hour parking. Mention that your store validates. Violating a parking space is a minor offense, Failure to pay toll parking is stealing and can be prosecuted.”

“olivine - I truly appreciate your attitude and your situation- some people do need a kick in their arse!

What you are going through with people who are that tacky is understandable- what I would do is this:

do what you need to do- for example - hit them over the head with a light weight umbrella (not too hard of course) and then say, "may you be well may you be happy and next time park somewhere else."

Joyfully,

Ed”

“I don't know...do you think Shakespeare, Leonardo de Vinci,Michaelangelo, Benjamin Franklin, all those kinds of guys, meditated? My breath interests me only to a certain degree, and that mainly involves just breathing.Nothing beats vegging out in a hammock under a tree, blue skies with a hint of clouds above, light breeze blowing, book close by just in case...and if that is far from present reality, then imagination comes in handy.I have all of eternity to bliss out, so why take up valuable time thinking of nothing, now?”

Chubbster replied on Nov 09, 2007 at 22:53:18

“Meditation is not thinking of nothing. Meditation is knowing what you are thinking.”

sabocat replied on Nov 09, 2007 at 08:38:08

“Well olivine, just to clear up a couple of common fallacies regarding meditation which you have expressed in your post. First of all, the breath involves more than just breathing. Think about it. The breath is a barometer of your emotional state. Slow, relaxed, deep belly breathing massages the internal organs, kicks in the parasympathetic nervous system, and sustains a relaxed state of mind. And how do we breath when we are upset, angry, or agitated? The breath speeds up and becomes more shallow. So focusing on deep belly breathing when we are upset helps to move through that state of mind more quickly.

Secondly, meditation does not involve using the imagination except in more advanced forms of visualization, which generally are not introduced into a formal meditation practice for quite some time, and in the case of insight meditation, is actually seen as a hindrance. Also, meditation is not thinking of nothing. Focus on the breath usually means picking one small location, at the belly or at the tip of the nose, and focusing awareness on the physical sensation at that point. Any physical sensation. Just noting and observing. Most people can sustain several years of practice just with that one simple practice, which actually has profound implications which I unfortunately do not have the space to go into. But if you read something like "Mindfulness in Plain English" by Henepola Gunaratana, he lays it all out.”
