Are Your Food Allergies Making You Fat?
Commented Nov 03, 2009 at 11:44:50 in Living
“For most of my life I have had symptoms of gluten intolerance including anemia and joint pain but only recently found out. For most problems of discomfort we are given medicine to treat the symptom without addressing the cause. For me the cause is gluten. I stopped cold turkey much to the disappointment of my tastebuds (sandwhiches are one of my favorite things to eat). After about 2 weeks I felt so much better that I no longer desired anything that contained gluten. Now about 3 months without gluten not only did my symptoms become virtually nonexistent but my skin started clearing up and I lost ten pounds.
Thank you for bringing this up - it changed my life.”

“Iwas exercising and eating a relatively healthy diet but still could not loose any weight. I have had stomach problems and anemia all my life. One of many nights I could not sleep because my stomach was upset - and I burped for about 45 minutes straight. I woke up the next morning and decided I had to figure this thing out - I realized something was really wrong. So I did some research and found out all of my symptoms matched a description of gluten intolerance. I cut out all gluten cold turkey which is no easy feat considering I discovered most of the food in my house contained it in varying degrees. After 2 weeks I felt like a new person. I lost weight immediately - still continuing my exercise regime which now actually started to show signs of defining my muscles. Nothing short of having children has changed my life so drastically. I have more energy and even feel more positive. Another side note - I generally would eat turkey or chicken about 5 times per week - sometimes for lunch and dinner, when I stopped consuming gluten the urge to eat meat started to dwindle to 2 times per week.”

Accelerating the rate of mutation? What mutation? Perhaps if you are a young asymptomatic carrier and you get the vaccine a mutation occurs? Not sure where you are going with this but I am not afraid.”

“All hereditary material is subject to mutation.Viruses contain hereditary material. Ergo (now follow me here, I know it's tough stuff), viruses are subject to mutation. This is how new flu strains arise. If more of the population is unvaccinated and is carrying and transmitting the virus to others, the virus is undergoing more rapid mutation and is more likely to develop into a more virulent, resistant strain.
Pretty basic high-school science I don't know why it's so difficult to understand.
Nobody's asking you to be afraid, just informed and not spreading lies about matters you are ignorant of.”

“Don't vaccines contain the live virus?
Aren't people who are getting the vaccine then carrying it?
Isn't this Pasteur 101?
Stop trying to make those who choose not to get the vaccine feel like they are contributing to the spread.
This is simply not true.”

“Unfortunately, yes, it is true. If everyone decided not to get vaccinated, then a great deal more people would get sick, and a great deal more people would die.”
goldandmudd replied on Oct 29, 2009 at 20:47:21
“Absolutely wrong. Pasteur 101 would probably include basic knowledge of immune function, herd immunity, live and attentuated viruses, evolution, and risk factors that increase susceptibility. You appear to lack familiarity with these topics.
If you are relatively young and healthy you can carry the virus and spread it to others while remaining asymptomatic. By carrying it you are not only accelerating the rate of mutation (rendering vaccine protection less effective), possibly up to the point of producing a virulent, resistant strain, but even average-virulence influenza can and does easily kill the elderly and immunocompromised.
Vaccinated individuals whose immune systems "take" the vaccine are not able to spread the virus in either form, live or attentuated. THAT is Pasteur 101, sir or madame.”

As a parent we are trapped into vaccinating our children based on public school requirements.
We need to be able to make informed decisions and should not be scared or pressured into treatment or vaccinations for our children that we do not agree with.”

Math, being naturally logical makes more sense once you "get it". I am glad our educators are open to alternative methods like JUMP.
In this 21 century digital world we have many tools - but there is a need to bring our methods in sync with technology. Based on current trends like using video games to teach students it seems we are starting to put it together.”

Women Are Unhappy? And You're Surprised?
Commented Oct 15, 2009 at 10:32:52 in Living
“I think we can look at the article about the Ralph Lauren model to gain some insight into why so many women are not happy.
Perhaps women should stop trying to reinvent themselves via plastic surgery, botox, makeup, etc and just experience who they really are - not other peoples ideals of who they should be.
They have enough on their plates being the main nurturing figure in most households whether they work outside the home or not. Let go of the pretense of being what others & society expect and be yourself - start getting to know yourself from the inside out and the natural beauty and confidence will radiate.”

“This is pure poppycock. Chicken pox and shingles are both herpes based viruses. Vaccines are for viruses. I would not expect the government to go down this path over and over either. There is quite frankly NO need. The facts about the pharma companies is that most of them do not nor have they ever; produced more than the actual demand of vaccines based on government contracts. I also have a problem with pharma companies as a person with a life altering illness, due to many issues, but that does not negate the positive things that are REAL and that work effectively.”

Give parents the choice. Many will think like you and go for all of them, some might allow fewer, rare will be those who do not get any.
If most in our country are vaccinated risk of an epidemic i s very low. In fact if we put more into research we might find that we have developed a natural immunity to alot of the microbes.”

It is also quite unfair to require that all public school children be immunized.
That should be a parental chilce and not a requirement to attend public school.
I am aware of the right to decline based on religion but not because you as a parent feel it is not right for your child.”

“*As a parent, you can decide what to feed your kids, how to dress them, what school they go to ... but vaccination is a public health issue due to "herd immunity". There are diseases that infants 6mos. and under can catch and die because they do not have a fully developed immune system and they cannot be vaccinated at that age. So if you don't vaccinate your kid, your kid can be a carrier and kill another child who's too young to have the chance to be vaccinated.
WHO AM I?
I am a mom of one autistic child (middle child), and 2 non-autistic children.
I was not born in the US but was privileged enough to make it here and call it my home.
My husband works for a pharmaceutical company in oncology.
We live in NJ, which has the highest rate of autism in the nation and also the oldest non-profit autism organization.”

“Truth be told record companies are becoming obsolete. Unless they get with the times and figure out a way to embrace new technology instead of suing and crying about downloads they will perish. If they spend half the money paid to attorneys to prosecute illegal downloading to people with some forethought they will survive.
Technology has made it possible if not probably for musicians to maintain creativity, sell their tunes, and promote concerts.
Underground artists are being recognized more everyday and most promote themselves through the internet.”

“Prevention is key - no matter where you are in life or what condition you are currently in.
If we all start keeping our minds & bodies fit we will heal faster - stronger.
Do any insurance companies cover preventative programs or do we have to be injured, sick, or stricken before nutritionists and physical therapists are deemed necessary?
Also, some doctors tell their patients they will be on medication for the rest of their lives – BP, cholesterol type meds – this seems unethical, basically wrong, and pointless.
Of all the things we are capable of controlling our physical state of being is the easiest to change.”

The most cynical and accurate view is that it is less profitable to keep people healthy....though prevention would involve costs spent upfront for a fraction of treating a serious illness.
In many ways we must take a philosophical position in order to re-shape the health care system (if that were possible). Individually we have an enormous responsibility to maintain our health and it takes a bit of effort and discipline but both are lacking in our society. Just changing our diet will go a long way towards improving health and wellness.”

“From their website:
By the time luggage reaches us, every effort has been made by the airlines to find the rightful owners. Usually the bags have no identification on (or in) them. The airlines use clues they find in the luggage, such as an itinerary or other personal documents, to try to find the owners. This effort by the airlines to return the goods results in a three to four month lag before we receive the baggage.
That means the baggage that arrives at Unclaimed Baggage is anonymous and up to 120 days past the travel date. And of course, many items we receive are unmarked belongings left behind in overhead bins or seat pockets. Further, the volume of products coming through our store on a daily basis - much of it bought by shoppers within hours of reaching the sales floor would make it a virtual impossibility to track any particular item.”
