“The new standards "... would allow foreign companies to challenge laws or regulations in a privately run international court." The article focuses on how that would affect U.S. companies. It failed to point out that foreign companies could challenge U.S. laws in that privately run court. On the face of it, this sounds like a bad agreement.”

“The funny thing about it is pre-history requires faith - faith in the assumptions that make up the theories (educated guesses) that explain what nobody can know. Yet, those who worship "science" denounce faith applied by religion.

Make Game of that which makes as much of Thee.”

In 1962 he was arrested, convicted of conspiracy to overthrow the government, and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rivonia Trial."

Mandela achieved great things by returning to non-violence.”

“If you go beyond what you can physically see, science requires you to believe in a multitude of theories. Theories are suppositions that require faith in their validity. You mention atoms. Contrary to popular "belief", nobody has seen electrons whirling around a nucleus of protons and neutrons. A series of images has been created  from imagination to explain scientific phenomena. That doesn't make them false. It just means they require faith in a similar way that religion requires faith. The faithful march as blindly in defense of science as for the many religions.”

“A number of commenters are offering arguments for or against "scientific theory" regarding origins of basic forces of nature. Both religion and science rely on faith. It reminds me of Camus' comments in The Myth of Sisyphus: "So that science that was to teach me everything ends up in a hypothesis, that lucidity founders in metaphor, that uncertainty is resolved in a work of art." Science is the new religion that relies on faith in unseen things.”

“Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.”

Mr Teflon on Dec 4, 2013 at 17:53:12

“[sigh] Do you understand anything about science or scientific theory? Science does not rely on faith; faith tends to assert a conclusion based on little/no/select evidence, and discard any evidence to the contrary. Science bases conclusions upon repeatable, observable evidence, and revises its conclusions as new evidence is discovered. It explains "unseen things" through evidence. Thunder is explained by a scientific process, not an angry, magic invisible being. Camus, while a wonderful philosopher and writer, was not a scientist. Pretty, wry, prose you quoted, but it's just that.”

AntiSocialSailor on Dec 4, 2013 at 17:42:09

“Let's say that someone does hate our President for any reason, whether it's his skin color or his age or his choice of dogs. So? The last president was white and many people hated him then and even more hate him now. I understand the point you're making and it's true that many people reject the President because of his color. But I don't think that's the reason for Congress being in conflict with him. I still see Barack Obama as a man and not something less ... not something weak and in need of protection. It doesn't matter to me if someone hates him for his color. I expect that. People hate me for my color. I got over that early on.”

“That's the result of a strong divide between ideologies. President Obama is more than just his skin color. He's a man with a past, present and future. He has ideas and opinions. And he seems to accept that he has to stand against opposition like any other man. Opposition against anyone is the result of many issues. To me, seeing the President's success and failure as a simple result of his skin color makes him somehow less of a man. It diminishes him. Throughout their lives, men succeed and they fail. I'd rather let the President stand against life like any other man and either succeed or fail. Anything less and it would be an admission that he's somehow less.”

“The future will grow more interesting as societies evolve. Growth creates wealth for both entrepreneurs and labor. But the earth is a finite size and can only support a finite number of people. As growth slows and overcrowding pressures social structure, people will be forced to evolve in ways they would not now choose. Seeing the relative wealth of others will draw emotion from those who have less. Change will come when enough people experience dissatisfaction over the disparity. Whether the change is through increasing wages and job opportunities or through limiting income and power of elite, change will come.”

“The founding fathers designed a divided government to prevent any one part from becoming too powerful. If one part of government became too powerful it would be able to unilaterally issue oppressive rules to the public. We might not like the conflict we see between Congress and the President but it is a reflection of the conflict in ideologies the voting public has. As voters evolve toward one side or the other, that will be reflected in who they elect. And that will improve agreement between branches of government. The conflict isn't with Barack. It's with his ideas of what he wants the country to be. Not everyone agrees with him. Every revolution begins with one person and a dream. It might take more time than his term in office to discover if his dream becomes a revolution.”

“I have to disagree. On the night of his first inauguration a group of Republicans had a dinner and at that dinner they plotted to obstruct him before he had even sat in the Oval Office, the plan was to make him a one term president and a failure. Has nothing to do with ideologies.”

“Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong was quoted as saying, "Linking research, treatment and careful monitoring is also the only way to control costs and create accountability in medical care ..."

The statement sounds good but it's only a sales pitch for his project. Costs will continue to remain high as long as doctors receive huge payments for minimal time with patients. Drug companies will continue to overcharge for medications as long as the public believes that their huge profits are used to create new drugs rather han enrich company executives and stockholders. And accountability will continue to be an unmet goal unless there is an easier way to remove bad doctors.”

“Some might focus on one party and claim they were bad for not agreeing with the other party. But it takes two to make an agreement. Both parties failed to find agreement. That isn't necessarily bad. In fact, that's how our government was designed. When conflicting political ideologies exist, a stalemate will happen. Until voters decide which direction to go, the stalemate will continue.”
