“At a time of economic crisis and two unpopular wars, the American voter must now confront the reality that their representatives in Congress prefer to legislate for lobbies that buy their vote
and the MIC which intimidates them, rather than for the citizens who elected them.

The Senate Health package is not a case of 'the good instead of the perfect', but rather a lack of White House leadership and a betrayal of the public interest.

Since blogging and writing to Congress have proven feckless against big pharma bucks, perhaps labor led work stoppages will deliver a more powerful message from the citizenry.”

“What will be most damning for the Bernanke and the Fed is their blatant lying about inflation. The inflation denying, which is the underpinning for maintaining the business friendly near zero interest prime rate, further fuels the upward pressures that are building toward a runaway inflation.

Lacking the courage to state that in order to further delay an inevitable collapse, the Fed will continue to fuel inflation for the momentary benefit of the stock market, but to the increasing detriment of Main Street.

He should be recalled to Congress to explain how his figures on inflation are derived.

We understand that a true rate of inflation figure would call into question the decision to provide 0% COLA increase to Social Security recipients in 2010.”

“hopeful:

If it were women approaching 70, would you agree that even with 'good doctors' their sex lives would not be "...as fulfilling as it was in their thirties (or better)? If so, then we are only quibbling over the age at which a woman's 'physical' sexual appetite and responses fade.

Even approaching 70, there are some females who still attain 'sexual fulfillment ', perhaps even better than in their thirties, but their percentage is minimal. And the overwhelming majority are relieved not to be expected to perform as they did in their thirties.”

“Were it not for Unemployment Insurance and Social Security, we would be seeing the breadlines, soup kitchens and apple sellers that were common in the Great Depression. This enables the media and economic pundits to avoid the use of the word "depression'. Instead, Krugman has coined the term 'Great Recession" to describe the worsening mess.

The reality is that we are in the early stages of what will prove to be an economic cataclysm, probably a system change. The Bernanke, Geithner led policy makers know they can't fix it and so they are doling out from the U.S Treasury to their fat-cat buddies whatever they can persuade a complicit Congress to authorize.

When it becomes impossible to deny that the economy can't be fixed, they will advise Main Street that the cupboard is bare.”

“Silver: "The yearning for sexual fulfillment goes on."

The yearning for sexual fulfillment goes on, but paler and paler responses bereft of novelty become the rule.

The percentage of women approaching 60 whose sexual fulfillment is undiminished is surely higher than that of women nearing 70 or 80.

If fulfillment is reached by participating and providing enjoyment to another, praiseworthy for sure, than an overwhelming percentage of women approaching 60 achieve fulfillment.

Those whose 'physical' responses and expectation heve not waned are also praiseworthy, but a rarity.

Does that help?”

“Women nearing sixty engage in sex, not anticipating sexual fulfillment, but rather the satisfaction of showing their partner that they are still able to participate.. For it to work for them, the partner must deal with many no-nos that (which she has invoked because they might be painful) which are not present when he is mating with women in their sexual prime.

This is not a universal rule, but the exceptions are slight.”

“The Brits will not prosecute Blair for the same reason Obama is not pursuing prosecutions.

There would be too many to prosecute. High ranking members of the military and intelligence services of both countries were involved in the plan to invade/occupy Iraq and knew that the information about WMDs was falsified and surely knew that Iraq and Saddam Hussein were not involved in 9/11.

And those who would be subject to prosecution still control levers of awesome power in their respective militaries.

It is helpful that Blair is now telling the truth.”

“MadinUS A.:

The last Crusade ended when Christian monarchs decided that the cost of sustaining their invasions of islamic turf far exceeded the benefits. After their armies and mercenaries returned home an era of peace ensued.

Foreign occupations, when ended, often result in violence. When the British left India and Nigeria, bloody civil wars followed. But neither would prefer that the Brits had stayed. Installing puppets engenders divisions, hatred among the occupied and all but insures bloodshed when the puppetmaster leaves. It hardly should serve as a reason for an invader/occupier to stay on.”

Sartre Meets Afghanistan: Obama's "No Exit" Strategy

Commented Dec 12, 2009 at 11:19:27 in World

“Badbone:

As a resonse to 9/11, a military strike to break-up Alqaeda and an attempt to capture Bin Laden were within the bounds of an appropriate response to the attack we were seeking to avenge. At that point a 'just' war.

Hitler may have been right that people of German origin were being mistreated in the Sudetenland and that a military response to rectify it could be considered 'just'. But when it became an occupation it lost its 'just' status.

So, too, in Afghanistan, our invasion/occupation can no longer be considered a proportional response. Just barbarous.”

“Gibbon in "Decline..." placed the time period when the Praetorian Guard, representing the Roman equivalent of the Military Industrial Complex, wrested power over the choice of Emperors and the decisions to wage war from the Roman Senate as 160-193 AD.

By 193, the military's control over choice of Emperor was so complete that it proposed that the position of Emperor be sold to the highest bidder at public auction. Our variant is getting closer to that.

Future historians will consider Eisenhower's warning on leaving office in 1961 as a starting point of the period during which the American Experiment in Democracy transferred similar power from the people to the MIC.”

“Following WW II, we had a burgeoning middle-slass and believed that we could relieve much of the hardships of the lower class. Progress toward that goal seemed within reach.

And then, we lost sight of that goal with the ascendancy of the miilitary industrial complex.

Now, relieving the suffering of the lower class seems beyond us and much of the middle class is toppling downward.

But, so our pollsters tell us, more than half the country supports the decision to escalate the war in Afghanistan. So much for upgrading health care, education, the infrastructure, the environment, and social programs.

As long as we define our national interests so broadly that outsized military budgets are first in line...
