“You know your nation's in trouble when the pornographers are making more sense than your elected officials. That said, Larry Flynt is right on target. Where do I sign up for strike duty?”

Wazzat replied on Aug 23, 2009 at 09:39:50

“Brilliant essay by Mr. Flynt.
What can or could Obama do the save his presidency? I thought, from the beginning:
-he has to keep reminding the forgetful, ignorant and TV-brainwashed American people
just how bad GWB and the Repubs screwed things up. That means, uncovering ALL the malfeasance and putting the crooks in jail....beginning with the election-stealing of 2000 and 2004.
This will furnish continued political capital for him to make positive changes, and will marginalize the Limbaughs and Palins of the country. An attack will be the best defense.
-he has to forget about Iraq, Afghanistan and the national debt- the Bush -inherited problems he can never "solve" - at most manage slightly to not make things much worse- and instead concentrate on lasting positive changes, which he must push through while he has the chance. (green energy, support for education, real health care reform, end to privatization of the military, the CIA and the prison system, end to porkbarrel weapons projects...). He is already doing that brilliantly in the sphere of improving international relations.
-Somehow he has to attack the root causes: lobbyists and media. For this he has to be VERY smart, as with an open assault he will be dead in his tracks.
-and oh yes, Wall Street....”

Want to Lower The Healthcare Price Tag? The Insurance Debate is Just the Beginning

Commented Aug 21, 2009 at 12:34:05 in Politics

“California has passed tort reform. Non-monetary damages (i.e. for pain, suffering and loss of life) are limited to $200,000. Four years ago, the retired father of a friend of mine was killed by the negligence of a doctor in a Santa Monica hospital. (An MD and mutual friend -- who before he retired, had been head of the gastroenterology department at the same hospital -- agreed that my friend's father's death was the result of a "medically induced catastrophe" caused by "improper coordination of care.") Not a single lawyer would take my friend's case because -- since her father was no longer working -- there was no "loss of income," and thus the damages that could be collected were limited by law to $200,000. My friend was not interested in the money. As far as she was concerned, the lawyers could have it all. What she wanted was to honor her father's memory by making sure that what was done to him would not be done to anyone else. Meanwhile, the negligent doctor -- who I guarantee you would not want to have treating you -- is still practicing at that hospital and no information about what he did is available to the public. So unless victims are provided with other forms of recourse to disciplinary action, tort reform does indeed have an adverse affect on quality of care.”

WaPo Unleashes Army Of Anonymous Sources To Slag Public Option

Commented Aug 20, 2009 at 00:13:20 in Media

“I'd have been willing to go to a town hall meeting -- even at the risk of being shot at by some Tim McVeigh wannabe -- and raise holy hell for single payer health care. But for a watered-down piece of "reform" negotiated behind closed doors with the likes of Billy Tauzin, .why should we on the "left of the left" (and raise your hand if you're as insulted by that dismissive wave of the hand as I am!), stick our necks out? So the "best and the brightest" in this administration can brag about how they "got health care done in the first year," when all we got was a piece of milquetoast legislation which (assuming we even get a "public option") will allow the drug companies to soak the taxpayers even more than they do under GWB's Medicare Part D?

As with the Wall Street bailout, the Rethugnicans will spin this so they end up looking like heroes for having taken a "principled" stance against skyrocketing deficits. What a shame, when all that needed to be done was to displace the stockholder standing with folded arms (and maybe an AR-15) between you and your doctor.”

How the White House's Deal With Big Pharma Undermines Democracy

Commented Aug 12, 2009 at 11:38:35 in Politics

“Every other nation in the G8 has a single-payer health care plan with the ability to negotiate volume discounts with drug companies -- this despite the fact that six of the ten top-earning pharmaceutical companies are Europe-based companies.

Why is it only in America that any attempt to provide equal access to health care comes with a built-in "starve the beast" provision?”

“Meatless Mondays? Are Americans really that behind the times? If we really want to save the planet from deforestation (i.e. the burning down of forests to create more fields for growing the massive amounts of grains and soy required to feed livestock), how about chicken-or-fish Mondays in an otherwise meatless month?”

“Well, what a total bucket of slime Daschle is, but I'm becoming ever more convinced that they ALL are. Obama has made some very bad choices and decisions, and already at this point, too many of them to be excused as learning curve errors. Where do these people get off thinking only THEY should be guaranteed health care? They bat aside any references to our wanting to have their same healthcare, they act as if that is so absurd a suggestion as to be completely laughable. Why is that? I have had to go on Cobra and so far, they have refused every single claim from routine blood work to Dr. visits and dental cleaning. It's been explained to me to expect that...that's what I can expect. I am paying $410 a month for NOTHING. Now, eventually they may pay something, but this is how they go about it, when you're under Cobra at least - it's that Nancy Reagan JUST SAY NO line. We have got to torture these politicians with letters, emails, anythign and everything, to tell them they had best not ignore the 76% of the country who want the public health care option. It has to happen, this will not come up again in my lifetime, I am sure.”

OBAMACARE: Will It Be Affordable Universal Health Care or a Government Bailout for the Insurance Companies?

Commented Jun 10, 2009 at 00:32:45 in Politics

“Yes. Sadly, after 33 years since I first registered as a Democrat to vote for Jimmy Carter in my very first election, and untold non-deductible $$$ spent in contributions to the Democratic Party, I must confess to feeling like I have been played. In Washington -- as Dick Durbin said of the banks -- the insurance companies (now often the same entities as the banks) "frankly own the place."

"If I get 85% of what I want with a bipartisan vote or 100 percent with 51 votes, all Democrat, I'd rather have it be bipartisan." Can you IMAGINE Karl Rove or Tom "The Hammer" Delay making such a self-defeating statement? Of course not! Which is why we still have unregulated derivatives trading (and big taxpayer bailouts for the losing traders) and why we will NOT have viable health care for all -- at least not during this administration.”

RepugsOut08 replied on Jun 10, 2009 at 05:26:29

“This is true. Rove didn't care if the Repubs won by only one vote. Winning was all that mattered. The thing about that is, it left almost half the country feeling kicked in the teeth.
Obama won this election decisively, and his poll numbers are strong. Now he needs the voters to raise their voices in loud support and a demand for a single payer system. If that happens, Obama gets the public backing he needs, and no one can say it just barely squeaked by.
Flood the White House and your reps with calls demanding single payer, and let us, we the people, be the catalyst for making change happen. If we don't, then that will be the ultimate self-defeat.”
