Jan Moir Column On Stephen Gately Death Sparks Row In British Papers Over Homophobia

“Moir ended up saying response was 'orchestrated'. It wasn't, it was viral and my take is that it was when advertisers starting pulling out from that page that made them make an unprecedented defence.
That advertiser response was probably helped by negative Mail reader response but more likely, i think, because on Twitter and Facebook people were being directed at them so they would themselves have been receiving complaints.
What this was not about was Daily Mail vs The Guardian. A few minutes Googling shows anti-Moir articles in Telegraph, Times etc.
It also wasn't happening just because Stephen Fry tweeted. This idea that nothing happens unless a celebrity is involved is ridiculous. I was watching the Twitter stream and very few tweets were Fry retweets. Media reports have played up Fry's so-called power but this isn't born out by what actually happened with #janmoir.”

“To posit this as somehow a event that has "brought two of Britain's most polarized papers to verbal blows: (see headline) rather than the second significant event in social media development this week in the UK (the other was #trafigura) just shows how US-centric Huffpost is. Oh, and how slack in hiring if a really significant story like this is left to 'Adam Taylor (who?).
This is twice in one week that the combined force of Twitter and the blogosphere has forced change from first the legal establishment and second the media establishment.
The #trafigura movement on Tuesday got two legal injunctions withdrawn, culminating in this http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/oct/16/carter-ruck-abandon-minton-injunction
The #janmoir movement got an unprecedented PR response from the hitherto impregnable right-wing bastion Daily Mail plus a rethink by the Press Complaints Commission after a record number of complaints.
All pretty much entirely from Twitter reaction. As I said, pretty damn significant.
As a prime example of New Media you'd think HuffPost could do better.”

“I think you'll find it was the response from the Daily Mails own readers (overwhelmingly anti Moir) rather than the Twitter campaign, which shook the Mail up. How easy would it have been for them to decry the likes of Stephen Fry? They couldn't do it when so many inhabitants of Middle England had
registered their distaste.”

“Comedy Central just blocked people outside the US from viewing Daily Show online. UK viewers now get only last few days episodes on local licensee's website for a week and the entire archive is blocked.
Needless to say UK and many European (and expat American) fans of Daily Show are very pissed off and we have yet to hear back from Daily Show on why (or whether, is it a channel decision) they have done this and if they intend to reverse it.
They have pushed the blame onto the local TV licensee but they have pushed back saying it's a Comedy Central decision.
There is an actly (Twitter) petition: petition @ComedyCentral to lift the IP block for #dailyshow video online UK http://act.ly/mr RT to sign”

“This video is obviously taken at night- so it's not "right now". Shouldn't legitimate protests be happening during the day? Why are there all the other protesters on the street at night. The college kids in the video are not the ones who were targetted by the teargas. The teargas was thrown into the area between the police and the protesters- not into the crowd itself-, obviously as a means to move the protesters in the other direction.”

Whilst the HRW report is good news for raising the profile of the pogrom, only Iraqi LGBT is actually supporting people (saving them from murder) inside the country. But funds are scarce and they consequently have to turn people away.
