“This is true. Has "I feel awkward with all this attention" young movie star. No comment on the acting. The first movie made Bella out to be a boring "has little to no life" girl who has a clash with the supernatural when she moves back in with her Dad.

She's nice, lovely, unassuming, aloof.

But as far as heroines go, kind of a yawner. I haven't read the book so its highly possible there's more there. But this movie heroine doesn't motivate me to want to read the book. So this book series isn't on my Bucket List.

If I were 15, I am sure I would gobble it up like pizza at a slumber party.”

“Ooooh, those despicable atheists! Uh-huh. The trouble is you use "soul" two different ways here. (1) Character, hardiness, compassion, love and (2) a mythical ball of energy that is separate from and persists after the body. The first can be verified to exist and the second cannot.”

Life After Death: The View From The Edge

Commented Nov 06, 2009 at 02:03:19 in Living

“Er... NEAR death experiences. None of the people who report these were _actually dead_, by virtue of being alive to report the trip, and their experiences could only have been interpreted by a mind in a deeply traumatic, unusual, unreliable, essentially unrepeatable situation (near death, that is). That mind being populated by countless conscious and unconscious ideas and expectations about death, who knows what might come out? As "real" as dreams. Interesting and occasionally productive, but not existing in reality.”

johnsopinion replied on Nov 06, 2009 at 10:18:25

“Er..., uh..., the expression is NDE,
"NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCES."
Not ADE,
"AFTER DEATH EXPERIENCES."

That's a whole other experience.

Of these "unrepeatable situations" you ask "... who knows
what might come out?"

Apparently pretty much the same, i.e., repeated, experiences
regardless of the flotsam and jetsam that went in, regardless
of the earthly location, and regardless of their vocations.
?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?”

“One thing $cn has in common with many other cults is a unique, nigh-incomprehensible vocabulary and lingo; making up new words and syntax, giving old words new and warped meanings. The further you get pulled in, the worse it gets. Reshaping your victim's entire frame of reference to the outside world (and their own mind, for that matter) is a powerful method of control, and many who manage to escape the inner working$ report years of adjustment before they stop speaking and thinking in $cn-ish. There's a bunch of fairly fascinating literature about this on the various anti-$ sites.

(Unless your question was rhetorical and you already knew that, in which case I need only say, hah!)”

Yes, I know that's an unfair logical leap, but so is demanding the "harshest" of penalties for non-murder crimes. Also not legal by US Supreme Court ruling.”

“Alas, "we" don't all believe in "a god far greater than us." But it ought to be noted that only due to the rise of humanity above subsistence living and the development of modern medicine have the lives of the vast majority of the mentally and physically challenged been saved. Those are fairly recent developments in terms of our species' history, so I'm not sure how much a supposedly eternal god has to do with it.”

The Left Should Reclaim 'Freedom'

Commented Sep 17, 2009 at 12:48:53 in Politics

“Jesus. Are you all out of sanity today? So basically, it should be acceptable for an insurance company to deny coverage for a six-figure surgery and hospital stay, thus plunging the patient/victim into bankruptcy, because if they were regulated against that, it wouldn't be FREEEEEEDOMMMM!!!??? That is asinine madness. There are degrees and types of freedom, and one can be essentially free while still being logically regulated; one person's freedom can also walk all over another's, as in my little example, and it happens every day, every hour.”

The Left Should Reclaim 'Freedom'

Commented Sep 17, 2009 at 12:44:04 in Politics

“But see, these are just words--angry, misguided, nonsensical words that don't have a semblance of proof or truth behind them. What freedoms, how, and to what end? How in the world does having one's healthcare covered make one LESS free? And if one is extremely rich, if their taxes can go to pay for the healthcare of 10 less fortunate souls, how does that make any of them less "free"? Rich person still rich, poorer ones a little better off. That should make the rich person feel GOOD, not tread upon.”

New Rule: A-hole in One Shouldn't Be Obama's Game

Commented Aug 15, 2009 at 12:34:15 in Comedy

“So you don't consider it a fact that raising meat causes huge amounts of gas emissions? That's the ONLY way Maher condemns meat-eating in this column--not on the ethics vis-a-vis the animal, but the ethics vis-a-vis EARTH. That makes it less and less of a "personal" choice and more one that affects us all.

Personally, I can acknowledge this is true while being (somewhat sadly) incapable of not eating meat. I loooove the stuff.”

DianaE replied on Aug 15, 2009 at 21:26:36

“If Bill really values the EARTH- he would be pushing for zero population growth- not eating less meat. Some of us with diabetes need to eat very little carbs- and that means we need to eat meat and fish and other animal products. So lay off. I hope the vegetarian police don't have their way.”

wizegeye replied on Aug 15, 2009 at 20:53:39

But his larger point was correct, if trickster-ish.”

“I like Shuster in general, forgiving the occasional prompter-tripping, but he sure did flip out when Charles Pierce went off script in the last segment the other night on the "birthers." And Pierce was right, covering the "birthers" in any way other than outright mockery due to total lack of rational thinking or facts does lend them whatever small bit of credence.

Someone on another blog said Maddow covering C Street is similar, which is totally wrong, as she is highly critical of them and doesn't provide a forum for justification of what is basically an attempt to shoehorn a particularly totalitarian flavor of Christianity into the Congress.”

“Yes, it does mean that. When a claim has absolutely no merit on its face, covering it in any way other than as a tidbit of seriously dubious origin and intent is legitimizing it. A good start would have been "President Obama presented a certified birth certificate from an American state months ago during the election, and no substantive proof has ever been offered to the contrary. That being said..."

You know very well that to some people, "dismissed by the courts" is only fuel for their irrational belief.”
