And the factory outside of town shutters as the chairman of the board decides manufacturing can be moved overseas.”

“Leave the guy alone. He's an immensely talented man who is a master craftsman at golf, it's history , and the focus required to attain his level of the game. But he is still just a man with a family who lives every day with the intense media scrutiny who are seething for his fall - whether it be real or faked by those who wish to profit on another's misery. I only the wish Tiger the best for him and his family.”

GwenElle replied on Nov 29, 2009 at 11:29:47

“I beg to differ. It is precisely for the reason that you state "he's an immensely talented man who is a master craftsman . . . " that the sharp eye of public accountability ( and tinny ear of gossip) is being applied to him. And should be. The perch of privilege, prestige, wealth and fame that the public's idolatry of his skills has afforded Tiger, comes with consequences. He must know and understand that the same rules apply to him that applies to the rest of us. And more importantly, we (the unrich and unfamous) must know, understand and insist on that. Failure to understand that is to undermine in subtle and insidious ways the very democratic principles that we so take for granted in this country.

I speak primarily from the point of view of whether a misdemeanor was performed in filing a false report to the police. But I also offer my comment in ridicule of the public attitudes and beliefs that accrue fame and wealth to individuals because we consider them to be "so immensely talented and masters of their craft (read the universe) that they should be or can be treated differently than the rest of us.

The sooner we end the cult of celebrity in this country the better off we all will be.”

“As a child on Sundays, I sat next to my mother and four sisters while the priest talked of the evils of abortion and how the unborn had rights. Did the unborn have more rights than us who where already here who needed a healthy and committed parent? To me, the priest was saying that it was okay for my mother to die in order to bring in another church member. It was at that moment when I was eight years old I determined the church's reasoning was selfish, mysogynistic and unfavorable to strong familes.”

My mother attends mass DAILY. One day, years ago, she was taking me to lunch at Neiman Marcus.. On the way, I spied a man standing on a street corner holding a sign that read: I Will Work for Food.

Knowing I was going to eat a fine lunch, I asked my mother to give the poor man some money. To which she replied," Oh, you don't give money to his kind."

If that was what she had learned being catholic, I wanted no part of it.”

“Thank you for the article. I do have a question for any professional. My otherwise healthy mother at 89 needed surgery for a calcium spur on her lower spine and also had the foramens for her sciatic nerve opened larger as they had closed to half of what they should have been. She had been on monthly medication (a biophosphate). When she had tests before the surgery, the surgeon did say she had the skeletal structure of a 45 year old woman (she's always been active and is now 93). Could the biophophates have contributed to the overgrowth of bone? I do not advocate not taking this medication but am curious of any connections. Thank you.”

“Creationists are underestimating their God. Why could not their God have created the intricate weave of the sciences? If you believe we are made in God's image, then we are to use our knowledge gained from experience to understand His or Her's scientic quidelines from which we evolved and then use it to help others through medicine, engineering and daily living. Creation can be taught by three simple words - God did it. Evolution is hard and it makes us challenge ourselves to understand how we can better the world.”

The conservatives believe it has to be their way or not at all, that God is Fallible.
Isn't it anti-religious to believe that God is Fallible?

But that is what they are exactly doing, they cannot accept that God has made Gay people, therefore they are claiming that God is Fallible by not accepting that he has created everyone and everything.”

“Peter, Paul and Mary were a gentle voice of reassurance within the '60s tumoil. " Blowing in the Wind"' was the first protest song I heard as a child to help me understand the consequences of war. We sang Lemon Tree and Puff with the car radio. Many years later as I left after a visit to see my Dad for the last time as he was slowly fading away, the last song I heard before I boarded the plane was "Leaving on a Jet Plane". I cried as the Iowa farmland disappeared and Mary's voice rang in my mind.

It's been said that the music of your youth leaves imprints on the rest of your life. I feel very fortunate that dear Mary Travers left many imprints.

I'll miss her smile framed by her long hair, her gentle yet strong tones and a reminder of a youth not mispent but enjoyed.”

Producers Scramble To Explain Oprah's Ratings Decline

“Everything has it's cycle and Oprah jumped the shark years ago. Her promotion of material things (ie car giveaways, Christmas list shows) were lost on me as she used her forum for a QVC like show with commercials. Sorry, Oprah. You've done tremendously good things in your life for the betterment of others which includes the support of President Obama but the material promotion has got to go.”

noradunn replied on Sep 14, 2009 at 09:51:27

“You can't treat your audience like they are your charity case. Her show has turned into The Price Is Right meets Queen for a Day, with her audience salivating over freebies and what's in the box and the goodie bag. Ellen does the same thing. I saw a women on her show offered tickets to something, but she had to submit to a movie star dunking her in a vat of green gooey stuff to keep them. It's the depression, I guess. But Oprah has substance, and it goes way beyond her show. Make fun of her weight, her tears, her self promotional personality, but still, she has had an important impact on women and the culture, and she has always put her money where her mouth is. The networks need her far more than she needs them. She doesn't need her show anymore, and maybe her audience doesn't either.”

“If one protects their child to the point they make their child suspect of everything they see and hear - including schools, when does that child have the freedom to learn without fear? Give your child the respect and responsibility to make those decisions early. Otherwise, these children of fear will gravitate when older to blindly follow a Limbaugh who pontificates fear and resentment. Listen to not only to President Obama today but also to others who want to take us forward - not mire us in the world of hate.”

Not teaching a child to think for themselves shows mistrust, not just for the world but for the child, as well. Living and ruling by fear needs to end.”

“"Your God gave you choice and expects you to use it wisely."

The words that I've been waiting to hear. I'm a religious person (Muslim), but I can't understand for the life of me why some religious folk 'leave things to God' and decide to disregard any personal decisions they have. To me (as is other Muslims and I think many Christians also), I live by the mantra that God won't help you if you help yourself. You as an individual take care of what is within your control and pray that God will take care of what is not in your control. This idea of having children without taking into regards resources and the feelings of others because God 'allows it to happen' is ridiculous in my opinion.

With that said, I think the Duggars are decent individuals; I just think they need to seriously analyze their 'thinking.'”

“Thank you Brad. I grew up on an Iowa farm where my Dad raised corn, oats, cattle and soybeans. Even with five children, we had but one car and a farm truck - by design. My parent were not rich but they owned the farm, took great pride in their family and put all five of us through college. If a neighbor had problems, everyone dropped what they were doing and got the neighbor's crop in without asking. Sadly. that way of life is slowly being dissolved into corporate entities without regard for land conservation or community responsibility. And it may just be our demise.”

Distant execs were indifferent to community needs and were targetting business and speculative investments that only served to increase their stock value and their influence in the board room.
