“I hear you. Once I needed help with a heating bill. It took eight hours, lots of documentation, a loss of a day of pay, but I worked at home and I needed the electricity in order to work. At the day I got $150 towards a $1,000 bill. I could have easily made that money by just sitting at home working, but the utility, LIPA, insisted they would not work out a payment plan unless I went to DSS and got a HEAP grant.

So I struggled on and, of course, since I didn't get meaningful help that day I was constantly behind on my utility bills. A couple of months later they shut us off in January on a 50-degree day. Two days later it was 17 degrees and very cold for the next two weeks. I was able to find a place to work so get some money to pay enough to have it turned back on. Today I have no balance, but it was a hard road to get there, amid several more outages.

Humiliation and nastiness is all you get in NYS. I have no idea how some people get benefits. And, yes, as one poster said, I have seen people with Food Stamps buy the type of food that I can only dream about. These type of people make it very hard for the honest folks like yourself, who really need and deserve help.”
