I've just decided that my $100,000 hovel, with water in the basement and a leaky roof, is worth $3.8-mil, and therefore the credit card companies should raise my limit to $75,000 each - and I should charge my cards right up to the hilt because, hey, I've got assets out the ass-ets.
Is that about right?”

As an agining hippie, I find myself in the odd position of agreeing with the conservative Muslims - but for a different reason.
Beyonce is a talented woman - she has no earthly reason to "enhance" her singing by dressing the way she does - and her MOTHER designs her clothing - creepy!
Woman the world over have suffered marginalization and lack of empowerment by catering to the male ideal of madonna/whore. If Muslims don't want to travel that long and dark road of anorexia, insecurity, neediness, I say hats off to them.”

“You seem to miss the reality that she does it because she can. No one is forcing her to live any way she doesn't want to. There will always be male and female ideals and I have no qualms with arguing their merits but if the only danger she poses to others is possibly to influence them by example and not by threat of violence then I say more power to her. You seem to be promoting censorship which frankly should boggle my mind, but it's not like you're the first "aging hippie" I've encountered whose mind-altering experiences seems to have closed more than they opened.”

Women living under that kind of tyranny are not empowered don't kid yourself.”

Number Of Working Americans On Food Stamps Surges

I am 61, have worked since I turned 16 - I am now working two part-time jobs, neither of which pay worth a darn. My husband is dsabled.
I have no idea how "illegals" or unqualified people get food stamps - in New York, you have to document every bloody thing about your life. Copies of your current bank account balance, earning statements, heat bills, phone bills, water bills, village taxes, county taxes, school taxes - they even make you take a form to your NEIGHBOR to have them swear how many people live in your home - and they "re-certify" you every six months, so you have to go through all that twice a year.
Without food stamps, my husband and I could't afford to eat, what with property taxes soaring - and lest you think we"re rich because we own a house, you should know we own a basic hovel, with electrical, roof and basement problems, that was built in 1861.
I am very appreciative for those food stamps, but pretty skeptical of much abuse in the program - the document requirements, at least in New York, would be pretty hard to fake.”

“I hear you. Once I needed help with a heating bill. It took eight hours, lots of documentation, a loss of a day of pay, but I worked at home and I needed the electricity in order to work. At the day I got $150 towards a $1,000 bill. I could have easily made that money by just sitting at home working, but the utility, LIPA, insisted they would not work out a payment plan unless I went to DSS and got a HEAP grant.
So I struggled on and, of course, since I didn't get meaningful help that day I was constantly behind on my utility bills. A couple of months later they shut us off in January on a 50-degree day. Two days later it was 17 degrees and very cold for the next two weeks. I was able to find a place to work so get some money to pay enough to have it turned back on. Today I have no balance, but it was a hard road to get there, amid several more outages.
Humiliation and nastiness is all you get in NYS. I have no idea how some people get benefits. And, yes, as one poster said, I have seen people with Food Stamps buy the type of food that I can only dream about. These type of people make it very hard for the honest folks like yourself, who really need and deserve help.”

The long length of time Congress gives before legislation goes into effect is one of the big problems - the credit card companies knew this was coming and has been busily bumping interrest rates, in advance - I've had both Discover and CapitalOne jump my rates in the last two months.
On neither card have I been late, nor am I anywhere near the credit limit they've assigned - on both, the credit limit is in excess of $5,000 and on both I owe less than $1,000. Their excuse, when I've called, is "the recession."
My response? Neither will get another dime of my business. If we all acted in concert, we could teach them a little thing or two about a TRUE recession - in THEIR pocketbooks for a change!”
