No, Rachel, No! This "Health Reform" Could Lose the Middle Class for Dems
Commented Nov 14, 2009 at 10:25:03 in Politics
“Agreed RJ - the battle is to make these bills BETTER, so that we don't have to wait another 100 years to address these problems. You need to lay the groundwork for structural improvements to the system, and the best way to do that from an incremental standpoint is a strong public option - OPEN TO ALL AMERICANS (get that Wyden amendment in the final bill!!!).
I don't give a damn about 2010 elections, or even 2012 elections - do the right thing and pass a bill which addresses cost, insurance reform, insurance antitrust exemption, access, and portability. Only once you address those issues can you fundamentally alter the way medicine is practiced in this country.
Time to stop being politicians and start being public servants - start thinking about what your constituents NEED, not what they want.”

That, on a purely human level, we have succumbed to base instincts? In the sense that instead of getting our country off of the Arab oil crack we developed an Energy Bill that was a giveaway to Big Oil and Big Coal?

“I'll just say this; the record companies for decades did not pursue the performance rights on behalf of themselves and their artists for radio broadcasts. It is standard in most other countries.
But, there are decades of precedent the artists and labels are fighting against to gain this right here in the U.S., so this is not a guarantee.
Dionne might just need a few good lobbyists, along with a few psychic friends, to win this fight.”

“Exactly. Even though, like John McCain once said, we should make earmark supporters "famous and you will know their names" unless we know what business is being discussed by said lobbyists with the politician, then we can't always construe evil intent when a lobbyist lobbies.
Business deserves a seat at the table - not enough to exert undue influence - but they deserve to make their opinions known to the political establishment. They have just as much right to that freedom of speech and expression as liberal interest groups. Because sometimes when business gets what they want they actualy do create wealth in this country by hiring workers, building plants and offices, etc...
WHERE'S THE STORY?”

Conservative Media vs. Progressive Media
Commented Jul 02, 2009 at 09:48:48 in Media
“But if you assume that those conservative media outlets exist to spread propaganda and their owners don't care about turning a profit as they represent minor outlays of cash for major media empire, then no matter what your profitability or trafic numbers are - those propagandists will still look to get their message across to drive their narrow special interests through whatever media channel they can.
Does Fox News Channel lose money? Whe they lose money, then you may have an argument.
It's great that progressive media have self-sustaining busines models. But that doesn't mean they will always have unfettered growth. What happens when the growth is not as exponential?”

“But Fox News DID lose money, at first. Cenk's point, I think, is that these organs are going to be around whether they turn a profit or not, as they're sole INTENT is to churn out righty billionaire propaganda (not unlike any number of think tanks that at least don't pretend otherwise.) This is perhaps a rebuttal to those who criticize liberal media's legitimacy when it flounders in the so-called marketplace.

NY Times/CBS News Poll: Wide Support For Government-Run Option Competing With Private Insurers
Commented Jun 21, 2009 at 10:54:34 in Politics
“"...77 percent said they were very or somewhat satisfied with the quality of their own care. "
But what does "care" mean in this question? We all seem to like our doctors, it's our INSURANCE PROVIDERS we are not satisfied with. Because we trust that our finely-trained doctors would be delivering even better healthcare without the insurance companies tieing their hands by telling those doctors what tests are"necessary," what treatments are "experimental," and therefore, not covered.
We applaud the medical profession - it's the medical insurance bureaucracy and callousness we loathe.”

“The right wing continually conflates health care with health insurance because they know people like their doctors. Their phrases "government run health care" and "government takeover of health care" are intentionally misleading, intended to engender fear about losing one's doctor. In every other country besides Britain, health care is provided by the private sector, not by the government, and they know that. Lies and half truths are all they have.”
LeftCoastLarry replied on Jun 21, 2009 at 10:58:43
“And will the insurance company be there for you when you need them most? If you lose your job and find yourself without insurance, can you buy insurance if you have a previously existing condition? Will your new employer's insurance cover that condition?
Why do we need a system in this country, of all places, where so many people end up hurting? Are profits for insurance company executives that important?”

“Yes, and it's not as if money isn't a motivator for people. We go to jobs and work for money and healthcare. Do we believe our companies control us in that way? Well, YES, but the point is we allow our jobs some level of control... as long as we get paid and get benefits.
And it's not like BUSINESS hasn't, through lobbying, tried to control the government, so isn't it just about time we reversed course?”

“This is the great game the moneyed elite play. The "American Dream" is always open for us all to succeed - in theory. But the moneyed elites are the rulemakers who define who succeed, and they want to guarantee their success time and time again.
They let a few people into the club to show how "anyone" can achieve the dream, but we dare not question the achievability of the dream itself. In fact, we need to co-opt ourselves and vote out of some amorphous "but some day I want to be rich" aspirational imperative whereby the multitudes of middle and lower class Americans vote for candidates who oppose universal healthcare, raise their taxes, cut their services, and profit at every point in the value chain.
It's pathetic.”
