“ditto. framing the debate in this manner is a bad idea and self defeating.”

IndependentBadger replied on Nov 05, 2009 at 22:36:10

“I could not possibly agree more. The fact that PETA just constantly displays utter blindness of this fact speaks VOLUMES about how out of touch they are with the average human being.

The average American can't afford the diet these maniacs insist on. ANd the average human loves meat. We're frickin' OMNIVORES, for Christ's sake.

They could only be that stubborn and arrogant if they don't ever plan on representing the majority of humanity. PETA's basically a business, at this point. Run by egomaniacs, staffed by well-intentioned idiots, and about as racially an economically diverse as your average yoga center.”

A New Wrinkle in the JFK Assassination Story

Commented Oct 30, 2009 at 16:19:31 in Books

“it seems odd to be so terrified of a small island nation regardless of whatever backing it may have had from the soviets whom themselves had backed down on nuclear conflict, only to risk the possibility of a war that may end in precisely that manner. anger sounds like a more reasonable reaction after the immediate shooting etc was over. also is the plane safer on the ground in the vicinity, or in the air? if the generals account is true, and i don't know it is, then cuba was not likely the target of his fears.”

Happyexpat replied on Oct 30, 2009 at 17:30:36

“There is substantial evidence that in fact LBJ was convinced--in that moment at least--that Cuba and the USSR were behind the assassination. It was for that reason the he wanted the Warren Commission finished as quickly as possible--to prevent nation-wide panic. If you do enough research you will find all of this and more--and from reliable sources.”

“i would add that all i have seen so far have been efforts at driving a wedge between hamas and the PA rather than encouraging them to resolve their differences. under such circumstances how can they live up to each others commitments if their dofferences remain unresolved? i am not suggesting this is trivial but it is certainly achievable. for one thing, hamas has indicated willingness to accept a peace deal with israel provided it passes a referendum http://www.turkishweekly.net/news/54614/carter-hamas-willing-to-accept-peace-deal-with-israel-if-approved-by-palestinian-vote.htmll)) so it is not right to suggest they are not open to a solution period.”

“implicit in my response is agreement that they are not presently unified. the reasons are several, including what was widely perceived by the palestinian street to be corruption in the PA, versus what at least started out as less corrupt leadership in hamas, differences about the usefulness of the path the PA was taking, and of course the more religious bent of hamas vs the PA though largely in response to the tendency In arab societies (and even in some segments of US society) for the street o look towards religious leadership when frustrated with the corruption in their political establishments. this has part of its history in the fact that the only criticism in these repressive regimes tended to come from religious leaders.”

“you need to ground yourself better in the history and on the facts. palestinians were quite unified under arafat until israel helped create hamas http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123275572295011847.htmll) as part of a strategy to fracture the leadership and then argue about nobody to negotiate with.”

nypoet22 replied on Sep 30, 2009 at 17:55:12

“if it was part of the israeli government's plan, i don't think the plan was very well executed, because hamas has been a disaster for everybody. the jewish children who have had rockets launched at them every single day are not too happy with the results; nor are the arab children who were caught in the crossfire of the latest retaliation in gaza.

at any rate, you've not refuted the initial point that the arab factions are unwilling to live up to each other's commitments, just cast blame on the israelis for things being that way. the blame for that situation is shared by all.”

TheLonelyGod replied on Sep 30, 2009 at 17:49:34

“Palestinians may have been politically unified under the PLO and Arafat, but they were far from psychologically unified. Remember, the only reason why Arafat turned down the peace offers in 2000 and 2001 was because he was afraid he'd be assassinated *by his own people.*

Regardless, that was then and this is now. The Palestinians are not unified now, and their unity (or lack thereof) in this past is not going to help us now.”
