Education in Chicago: Thank God We're Not Texans!

Commented Sep 05, 2009 at 13:09:49 in Chicago

“As a SoCal transplant living in Texas for nearly 6 years now, I can't say I'm surprised. Sad but true. The sports-above-intellect culture can be stifling at times.

This is a state where high school stadiums rival and/or beat the tar out of college stadiums in other states. This is a state where you're either a jock or a brainiac. There are no in-betweens and unfortunately, the jocks are winning and will continue to do so unless and until we get the right people in the right places to make the necessary changes.”

“As Texas short-sells its children, they present a problem
'education' has been moving toward over the years but
refuses to admit. At least Texas is bringing this problem
into a sharp focus.”

The Future of Democrats in Texas

Commented Jul 08, 2009 at 00:27:00 in Politics

“I'm in the Dallas area, too. I had the only Obama sign in my neighborhood until late in the election season. While I don't know how it's been in past elections (being a Cali transplant and all), it was nice to see the little wave of signs cropping up as time went by. It was almost as if some were afraid of putting them in their yards until they saw others doing it.

I think that the biggest obstacle we have with a lot of people here is they are traditionally tied to the Republican party. I can't tell you how many people didn't like Mc Cain but they chose to vote for him anyway because they've always voted Republican. Even my Dad, a Texan transplanted in California, voted for Mc Cain even though he didn't like the guy. He said that he just couldn't leave the spot blank. All I could think was, "Really?" Geez Louise!”

Adios, Sarah! I sincerely hope you do not return to politics.”

“It's propaganda, and these soldiers have fallen prey to it. If there isn't much else to watch or listen to, I guess it wouldn't be hard to start believing that crap. You're right., though. It's very sad.”

“And the WORST plank in mccain's platform? the idea to employee these returning soldiers as teachers WAIVING the certification training everyone else has to take!
Yes the military is all about FOLLOWING ORDERS, NOT critical thinking.
Our schools already tilt too much in that direction with NCLB, and ( I'm guessing) the neo-con infiltration into the top levels of teacher training.
I discovered the root cause of Conservative vs Liberal thinking, in a local newspaper, comment section, about kids carrying political signs at a demonstration. A teacher said they are too young to understand until middle school high school. The conservative response was that kids know nothing until they are adults. Therefore you just buy them an ATV, or snowmobile, and let them go be kids will be kids....... ( sorta palin style).
MY LIBERAL PARENTS: gave us the freedom, to think for ourselves, but they turned family time into a game that enlarged our vocabulary etc. I formed my anti racist viewpoint on my own by OBSERVATION before age 10.
( I DID see a local ( rural conservative area) training her 2 year old in the market to repeat some meaningless, TV personality phrase, complete with high five gestures. ( Maybe that kid will run for Pres as the candidate most would have a beer with?)”

Please don't go to Australia or NZ, there are too many good people who don't deserve to be stuck with you and your kind. No, go and buy up some deserted island faaaaar away from here and you can live hatefully and fearfully ever after on your own.”

“I think they all see the writing on the wall. With the economy being in shambles, they're gonna say whatever they need to say to get a paycheck. Party time's over for them and they know it. With all of the years of lies and deceit, they'd be lucky to be flipping burgers somewhere after it's all over. Credibility is hanging on for dear life (if that), and the only ones left to point fingers at is themselves. I bet there are no mirrors in any of their homes. I don't see how they can even think of looking at themselves for fear of the awful truth that would be staring right back at them.

It's sad that even in these crazy times they value money over honesty, integrity, and doing the right thing.”

Ethics? How about that little thing affectionately called Troopergate? You know, that case that she had no problem with investigation-wise...... At least until she was chosen for the VP spot.”

“Just so you know, *this* soccer mom isn't impressed with Palin and neither are a lot of other soccer moms I know. Please give us more credit than that!

I don't even find her charming. My kids are charming. Babies are charming. My dogs are charming. She comes off as smarmy to me. Can you imagine what people would say if it were Senator Biden winking in front of the cameras? Please.

Her inability to answer questions should be a red flag. Her interviews are who she really is, people. That person shouldn't be anywhere near the White House. You can't BS your way through foreign and domestic policy as if you're trying to get a good grade on a term paper. It's a joke. She keeps adding extra words to her responses as if she's trying to convince herself that she knows what she's talking about (ex. Alaska, our great state in the north.... as if we don't know where Alaska is...). Without the fluff, there's nothing.

I have the same worries as you do, Sheryl. However, failure to check facts or denial of the facts isn't limited to any one group of people.”

“So someone becomes a victim of a violent crime. The crime scene is basically their body. They have to PAY to collect the evidence necessary to even have a case. If they can't afford the kit, then what? Too bad, so sad? And oh, if that rape victim ended up pregnant....

Is this her way of saying that victims of sex crimes somehow deserved it? Seriously, how could anyone in their right mind justify this crap?

Yes folks, she was nowhere NEAR vetted. If she was, then the GOP puppetmasters are truly deranged for bringing her into the campaign.

Hello, 527s? Hopefully something has been put together just for this BS. Please please please come up with SOMETHING.”

If patriotism means fighting for your country, then this country is severely lacking. That's a hollow argument and you know it.”

“You took the words right out of my brain. I thought it was sad that she would change so many things about herself (even down to accents!) in order to get votes. In this day and age of technology, it isn't hard to get the news from other cities and states, so she couldn't possibly think that others wouldn't notice. Seriously, what could be so wrong with who she is on a normal basis that she would resort to trying to be everything to everyone?

I think it all boils down to character, and to see so many different sides (not knowing which one is the real Hillary) made it that much harder to vote for her, IMHO.”
